Hi Everyone, I'm very excited to be a new player here, but I am getting bumped off the server regularly (can't play for more than 7 or 8 minutes). I have an excellent internet connection and a brand new high end Macbook Pro. Never this problem with any other online services. Are there some special network configurations for the Mac platform. I know it's new to this game. I'd appreciate any help
Thanks!

I'm having the same issue... it took 5 reconnects just to make a character! It seems that if you are idle for more than 15 secs, you get dc'd.

I also notice frequent disconnects with the mac client, while my friend running the windows client right beside me on the same internet connection did not disconnect once.

Same thing happening here.
Got through character creation after two tries, but got to about the second bar of the tutorial before it kicked me right back out.
Macbook Pro here as well.

It has to be the client, because I can play just fine in BootCamp on this same box.
What is even more special, is that it will never tell you you are disconnected. so you have to wait 10 misn to find out that you aren't getting any more ice...

I have the same problem. I'm connected a bit longer when I'm ingame, but creating the character was a right pain (tried 5-6 times before I got all the way through).
I think it's critical for this problem to be fixed quite soon, as I can't see myself extending beyond the free trial with this problem present.
Good luck, Eve devs! :)

I am having the same problems as well (running on a macbook pro). It doesn't seem to be related to beeing idle- I just hapens every once in a while: while warping, mining even fighting or just flying around. I tried wireless as well as a direct ethernet connection. I feels like it is a little better on ethernet. But it still disconnects.
When disconnected it sometimes freezes (the client doesn't log me out). Or the programm quickly closes down with the error above, restarts again in let's me login again.
I am very excited to run eve on my mac- I was waiting for this to happen for such a long time- please fix this bug...

I just submitted a bug report on this and asked them to look at this thread. Last night I was able to play for almost an hour and then bam, 6 crashes in row, almost gave up but then I could play for another hour and bam, 4 crashes in a row. I have had to force quit the app. to get my computer back and saw the Cider Runtime error box briefly on the desktop before it disappeared. I agree with whoever posted they were unlikely to continue playing in the PAID mode after the demo period if this isn't fixed. It's really annoying.....also lost a drone when the crash occurred while it was out....:(

Yeah, that was me. :)
I'd like to add that from a PR point of view the effects could be worse than some people chosing not to subscribe. It'll likely tarnish EVE's reputation if left unsolved when trials start expiring. I can't see myself recommending fellow mac users to give it a whirl if it continues as is.
Not to be harsh or anything, but if you're releasing for a new market and offering a trial, you'd better make pretty sure it performs OK...

Well, the bug team was right on my report but they couldn't reproduce the problem so closed the ticket. Maybe they fixed it? I haven't been bumped yet today after about 3 hours.....hmm
Here's their response:
Thank you for your bugreport - ID:46236 Title: Lost Connection to Server The problem you have described was non-reproducible. If you are still having the problem you described, could you please file another bugreport with an improved set of reproduction steps. I doubt they fixed it. I got kicked earlier today several times.
As for the response, how can they expect us to supply steps to repoduce the problem when the problem itself is totally random? I have seen no pattern whatsoever to the disconnects. It has happened: - During character creation - In space - Docked - Using most dialogs and systems
The fact that the client bounces back to login while displaying a runtime error dialog tells me that this is not a networking issue, it's a bug. They should be requesting logs or other info to be able to track down the problem, as it likely only occurs on a subset of hardware and/or system versions - a combination they may not even have for testing.
(is game developer, knows a bit about bug-hunting... :) )

I'm still having the problems today so it's not fixed. Mine has crashed at least 20 times today in just a few hours of play. I'm in the trial period right now and if this gets fixed I'll subscribe, but with the constant crashes it is extremely frustrating.
I'm playing on a MacBookPro 2.0ghz, 2GB RAM.

I'm getting kicked pretty frequently, also. No pattern to it that I can see, sometimes I'm not even interacting with the game when it happens. Lost connection one time sitting in the dock, while I was browsing the forums in Firefox. I occasionally get an error mesage from Cider when it happens, but mostly it just drops the connection with no explanation. I am seeing several of the following two entries in my console log:
Quote: 2007-11-09 23:07:52.043 cider[7745] Error reading affiliate.plist:File ôaffiliate.plistö does not exist.
Could not stat /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/f_drive (No such file or directory), ignoring drive F:
The second message shows up much more frequently than the first. I can't tell if they correlate with the dropped connections since most don't have time stamps.

Edited by: Zathus2 on 10/11/2007 23:08:01 I got the "Lost Connection" message about 6 times while trying to create a character (twice while I tried to watch the intro movie, gave up). Max I could stay in was about a minute.
Once I created a character and started playing, I still get kicked, but times have extended to a few minutes. I also notice that I get more random behavior - sometimes I get an "invalid execution" error, referring to c:/program files/something, but sometimes not. Either way, it ALWAYS brings me back to a "connection lost" message.
I also don't see anything that looks relevant in the Console Log. I also don't see that there's ANY log file for this game, either a Cider log or EVE log (looking around inside the app archive).
I've been curious what this game was about for a while, I guess I'm going to have to stay curious.

It all makes me wonder if the "Lost Connection" message is a red herring, and that it's just something that shows up any time there's an Application Error that causes something inside to crash. The error maybe has nothing to do with losing connections at al..

Weird. Now I just played for about 30 minutes before it crashed, first time for longer than a minute or two. It again gave the "Program exception" error, then "Lost Connection". So maybe it does have something to do with communication with the server.

i get the Cider runtime error window in the back, and disconnected from the game quite often... completely randomly.. never really the same way twice. well i take that back, i had the same error twice while trying to resize UI windows.
its very annoying, getting booted form Cider messing up over and over and over. Hopefully they'll have a fix before my 14 day trial is up, because its not worth paying for the current way it is.

Same problem here, after roughly 10 minutes of play the game exits, briefly shows a Mac error message (something with an EXE file - to fast to read it completely) and then the game reverts to the login screen before freezing.
I filed a bug report. If this is not fixed I'm not getting past the trial.

It seems like the number of players on the server might be part of the problem. I was playing last night, and as it got later & the # players dropped, things got more stable. I was able to play for long periods without any problems at all. This afternoon there are upwards of 36K players, and I can't stay on for more than a couple minutes.
I just got disconnected while editing this message. I was sitting at the character selection screen, hadn't even gotten in the game yet.

Continuing my follow up on this....I was able to play 4 hours yesterday and 4 hours today without being bumped once. My roommate, however downloaded the demo yesterday and has been bumped a bunch of times yesterday and today. We're on both on the same LAN/ISP, but' he's running a Mini under Leopard. This seems truly random.

I too had patches of really good gametime saturday/sunday. Could play for hours. However, all of a sudden this problem rears it's ugly head again. And to add to the joy, I've had some freezes too where I've had to force-quit. It does indeed seem extremely random.
Fix it! :)

Edited by: Jeremy Green on 12/11/2007 17:07:54 I keep checking my logfiles when ever I get a freeze/disconnect. I get the following:
[xxxxxxxxxxx].com.transgaming.EVEOnline 000a: Protocol error: Invalid mach port received! (this happend when the programm closed completely, after restarting it told me that it had lost connection)
I keep getting a ton of these: [xxxxxxxxxxx].com.transgaming.EVEOnline[2491] Could not stat /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/f_drive (No such file or directory), ignoring drive F:
But even when it runs fine- so this doesn't seem to be the reason.
Here is another when: com.apple.launchd[138] ([xxxxxxxxxxx].com.transgaming.EVEOnline[2469]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 2472 PPID 1 cider (when I restart eve after a disconnect, this comes up most of the time.)
I am willing to test this- but I would need some proper logging method- beyond the console.... any ideas?

I too have noticed that the client tends to be more stable if there are fewer players online. However even that trend doesn't always hold. So maybe there is not trend there at all, and it's just coincedence.
I have see the mach port errors as well, in assocication with a crash. The business about the F: drive seems to be a red herring, but I can't be certain.

they really do need to fix this...
It seems like they want to ignore it because its "not reproducible"
well its easy to reproduce, just play non stop on the OSX client for a few days and your bound to see it.
Sometimes you can play and have no problems at all, for many hours.... then you can have it go completely unplayable with crashes every 2 minutes.... then just all of a sudden later on it'll be working fine again.. and can play another 10 hours with no problems.
hopefully there will be a fix before the 14 days are up... they might be ignoring it here, but possibly Transgaming is looking into it since they are more focused on the Mac and Linux clients, and i doubt no one there has had the issue.

I appreciate everyone keeping this thread alive because it might get their attention if it stays up here at the top. This is a great game when it works and I'd really like to buy in. Got in another 4 hours yesterday and then bam 4 crashes within 10 minutes. Then another two hours with no problems. I don't believe this is a lost connection problem, that's just the error message we get. The program is obviously crashing first

So far I have to say that I am less than impressed with the Mac Client. I have been disconnecting several times an hour and have random kernel panics a few times a day with EVE running. I have found no difference running the client on a high end Mac (dual processor quad core Mac Pro) versus a low end Mac (Mac Mini 2.0GHz).
What I find most annoying is that the server doesn't seem to realize I was disconnected because I have been bumped in the middle of combat 4 times and come back to find that I have lost my ship. It's getting expensive to keep rebuilding ships even at my low level.

Just to add my experience. I almost exclusively get disconnected while I am docked in a station. It seems to happen completely at random. Sometimes I'll go 15 minutes of browsing the market just fine then suddenly I will get disconnected 6 times in the span of a couple minutes. I will try unchecking the "load station environment" setting tonight to see if that helps. I've only been disconnected out in space once that I recall, and it was while jumping on auto-pilot.
I have two macbook pros and have had the same iffy experience on both of them. The main difference between them is that one is an earlier rev with a core duo cpu and the second one is less than six months old with a core duo 2 cpu. I can provide more specifics later if they are needed. I am running 10.4.10 on both of them. But like I said, I'm having the same experience on both.
I'm also on a trial account hoping to become a full paying customer. ;-)

I have the same problem as everyone else... getting kicked out every 10mins or so, and I spotted the runtime error, but it vanished too quickly for me to note everything down, but it definitely was looking at the address c:/program files/ccp/eve online... which is kinda weird, considering I'm playing it on a shiny new aluminium iMac 20" machine (running Leopard).
I hope a solution can be found soon, as I think I'd enjoy this game, but I'd need to play it for more than 10 minutes at a time ;-)

This may be related to this issue:
In the config file (EVE Online/EVE Online.app/Contents/Resources/Preferences/config) there is this: [Drive F] "path" = "@BUNDLEPATHRESOURCE@/transgaming/f_drive" "Type" = "cdrom" "Label" = "cdrom" "Filesystem" = "win95"
F drive is apparently supposed to be a virtual CDROM; but no f_drive exists in the /transgaming/ folder inside the application. Either the app is incorrectly looking for F drive, or there should be something there for it to find, I think.
Hope this helps.

Well I've been at it since Nov 6 and it's working better all the time. Lots of people seems to say that the worst is during character creation.
Also it seems that MacBook pro is an issue. A while back someone posted a link to Apple about MacPros bugs, somethign to do with video card IIRC. Lots of people reported progress over time. I've had lots of crashes since I started but it's getting better.
I close all my other apps, and sometimes restart the compu before I jump in...
