I am currently training my alt to scan for exploration and combat. I don't know if I should get astrometrics to 5 for the DSP's. He will be in a covert ops frigate. Anyone have insights? |

Sisters Core probes are able to pull off similar results though they do not have the same radius. If you are consistently having to drop two or more initial 32AU's w/ Core probes to cover the system then it will save time. How much that time is worth is up to you. |

If you are probing down all sigs in a system, they're not always worth it. But if there is certain stuff you're looking for more than others, they can be extremely useful. |

I use them all the time. I enter a system, drop a deep probe at 256AU, "Anything here?" Yes? I drop cores or combat and hunt it all down (take notes BTW). No? Warp to next system while collecting the DSP. I know I left a battleship in this station. Wait, you can put ships in Station Containers? ****! I just trashed them. |

THey are extremely important to veteran explorers. You can launch one probe. see which signatures are worth triangulating and skip the ones that aren't worth it. WIth core scanner probes you have to scan every unknown signature down which is time consuming |

Isnt there a guide somewhere that literally spoon fed you the info on using DSP and all that jazz? I remember reading one that was extremely well written.
Anyone have the link, I would love to read it again.

That one? It's the de-facto guide for DSPs as far as I know. |

deep space probes are not worth getting no. astro 5 most definitely IS worth getting tho.
the reason you get astro 5 is to use 8 probes, not deep space probes. learning to use 8 probes properly will save you way more time than deep space probes ever will. |

In certain scenarios yes - such as nailing 20 sigs in a wormhole.
However, for highsec exploration it's too time consuming. 5 is plenty, and DSP's are a must. The box said "Requires Windows-á2000 or better", so I installed Linux. |

I agree with Jack that astro 5 is pretty useful for anyone doing more than the occasional little bit of scanning. I don't agree that deep space probes (DSPs) are "not worth getting". They may not be useful for jack's sorts of w-space efforts but for us they're virtually essential.
We do not use DSPs to scan down any particular sites or ships, but they are fantastic for a couple of other specific tasks. The thing about DSPs is their 256AU range, which means that wherever you drop them in any system they cover the whole system. Combat probes do this in most cases, but it's easier for the lazy user to deploy DSPs and not need to check system size and makeup.
Our main uses for DSPs is 'stocktake' scans and system monitoring.
The stocktake is where I want to get an idea of what a system contains (and to narrow down which sites might be the WH you're looking for ... based on initial scan size). When I hop into a new system (except if I want to be entirely unknown) I usually drop a single DSP, set to 256AU, as I power away from the WH and cloak. Within seconds that gives me a good overview of what is in the system.
The monitoring role, again a single DSP set to maximal range, allows me to keep a close watch on the system that we're operating in ... with a much greater coverage range than the directional scanner. I get to 'see' any new K162s usually before any hostiles jump thru, and I get to see most hostile ships in plenty of time.
I agree that being able to use 8 probes will save you scanning time, but DSPs are not (for me) mainly about scanning time. For me DSPs are more about 'big picture' and safety support. I love DSPs and find them very helpful in our w-space ops. Obviously not everyone's ops are the same and others do not find them as useful.
We can build and sell pretty much every ship. Check my bio for details. Our pirate epic arc completion packages really are very good: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=12973&find=unread |

The most profitable use for deep space probes is to identify 4/10 and Vigils in high sec (or 5/10s in low sec), since they have a lower signal than K162s.
It's not perfect - some outbound wormholes, mag sites and grav sites have the same strength, but filtering out K162s (which are about 80-90% of signals in high sec) will save a lot of time. Some explorers basically farm 4/10s in pimped out Tengus all day, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were actually bots. |

A bot for exploration
I think the download would be larger than the Eve client... The box said "Requires Windows-á2000 or better", so I installed Linux. |

I doubt it. There are only a handful of 4/10 with well known rooms and triggers, running the sites shouldn't be harder than automatic null-sec ratting ships. Automating the scanning would be the hard part, but I'm sure it's possible.
