Hi,
As a budding pirate, I find it quite confusing and hard to understand the intricacies of when someone can engage in combat or not in empire.
I was trying to provoke players into a fight in Empire, and someone was kindly willing to acquiescent. She ran off, grabbed a rifter, and came back and attacked me - being free to do so as I had stolen off her.
Immediately a friend of mine in the same gang (fleet now?) and corp warped in, but got a warning that concord would respond if he attacked.
If he had been in the belt itself when I was engaged would he have been allowed to participate? Is there a guide somewhere on the intricate rules of engagement?
Thanks

Wish I could be more 100% on this but...
Just because you get a warning from concord, doesn't mean you'll get concordokkened. Smart bombs in a mission will give you the pop up, but you wont get popped.
And if your buddy is allowed to engage, the target will be flashing red to him. That's the easiest way to determine what is or isn't engagable. Anything other than flashy red or a nice red star, will get the hurt put on you by concord.
If you stole from them, they and their entire corp can attack you. If they attack you, your buddies don't get kill rights on them. I think... for some reason that doesn't feel 100% accurate to me. Hopefully someone with a bit more on hand knowledge can clear that up some more.
And yes, I love changing my fleet to a fleet... heh hopefully that gets cleared up soon, albeit not the biggest worry in the universe.

Why are you still reading? Its over. Continue to the next post.

Edited by: Sirius Problem on 10/11/2007 16:56:59 Simple rule for hi-sec (0.5 to 1.0) systems. Unless it is flashing red. Do not shoot at it. Period. Of course, this assumes you have not done something bizarre with your overview settings.
A fairly comprehensive guide to aggression/flagging can be found here: Linkage, but just follow the flashing red rule and you should always be ok.

If you steal from one of my corp-mates, I can shoot you for 15 minutes. If one of my corp-mates steals from you, and you engage, I can't shoot you, but can repair my mate....and become a legal target for you as well.
NPC corps don't give any kill-rights - everyone is on their own. _______________________________

Bit more clarification here:
When you steal a cargo can from someone else, you flag yourself to that person and their entire corporation for 15 minutes. If they shoot at you in return, they flag you individually for 15 minutes as well. If you steal from someone in an NPC corp, you flag them individually for 15 minutes.
If you mouse over the aggression timer in the upper left of your screen, it will tell you exactly who you are flagged to.
On the note that you just tried ganging up on a frigate in highsec....I have to tell you that you're quite lame.

Let me get this straight. You're coming to the Forums to ask how game mechanic work after failing to gank a frigate with your buddy in Empire? Ok, well as long as we're on the same page let's straighten this up.
You've got it backwards. The ganker is typically the guy who gets stolen from. Example, say you steal from my can while I'm mining. You aggro me (and my corp since you stole "our" property). This also happens if you steal my loot. At this point I tackle you and my friends appear in local and warp to me. You can only shoot me as they arrive since I'm the only one who has "accepted" your aggro from theft although they're all able to as well. As soon as they shoot you, you also gain aggro on them and can return fire. Your buddy hasn't stolen and is bound to just sit there and watch as you explode.
The mechanic exists to prevent the exact kind of behaviour you're talking about. It stops people from blobbing unsuspecting nubs (or more "experienced" carebears). I'd suggest either learning the game mechanics before trying a gank next time or trying a different form of PvP.
Note. This is not a flame. If this had been a flame, I'd have used my profanity filter more and the sarcasm would be more biting. I'd also have used some dry wit. If you wish to dicuss my opinions come visit me in game. okthanxbi

We were both flying frigates as well, and I won on my own anyway. But what does it matter? I'm sure pirates will have the charge of "lame" levelled at them frequently - so thanks for being the first for me.

Sure - but as you're probably aware Eve website has notoriously out of date documentation, so often the quickest way to learn is by trying in game, or asking on forums. Tried the first, then the latter. Thanks for the help guys!

Actually....pirates don't get the charge of lame levelled at them all that often.
But then, you're not really a pirate yet, are you. =p
Every time that someone asks for a duel with someone, and then brings a friend because they're afraid of losing, CCP TomB kills a Minmatar slave girl. We're starting to run out of X-Rated Holoreels with the lack of actresses.

No, not yet! How many transgressions of the law and acts of theft does it take to get the title? ;) (Even if not a good pirate!)
From what I've read of other pirate stories, it seems that accusations of "lame", or something similar, come quite frequently.

Undock in an Ibis, lock and engage the first person you see. Get blown up by concord. Wait 15 minutes. Be on your merry way with negative security status :D
Or go lowsec and kill everything you see, including pods and be sure you don't forget to shout Yarr in local..
