Quote: "Conservatively," Goodwin muses, scratching his chin, "it'll get 60 miles to the gallon. With 2,000 foot-pounds of torque. You'll be able to smoke the tires. And it's going to be superefficient."
this is awesome! and it bio-diesel. |

Bio-diesel, fuel efficient, 60mpg Hummer? Thats amazing
If the price tag wasn't some $28,000 ON TOP of the cost of the car, I'd be all over one of those babies... ------

As much as I hate Hummers (cap H not small h), this is a fantastic application. However there's got to be a huge mistranslation somewhere. The turbine doesn't just "roar into action for a few seconds." You can do that, but it's a huge waste of energy to fight inertia. A turbine in that application should be running continuously, providing a constant charge to the capacitor. What this fellow has is a Tarminic-style cap battery that would be more effectively replaced by a Power Diagnostic Unit. This Hybrid-Hummer is, in effect, still a Hummer: The most horrible waste of hybrid technology available. ----- TANSTAAFL

except that a old landie will run happpily on meths, diesel, petrol, or chip fat, unlike a hummer...
prettier too...

a regular diesel engine, together with some extra basic modifications like extra fuel filters, can run on used chip oil.
in fact, the diesel engines were produced a century ago with this in mind.
the only problem of the diesel engines is the fact that the fuel needs pre-heating, if you're in a cold environment, due to the low volatility of some fuels. ---

well this was tried many years ago to make turbine cars, at the time they actually had a transmittion which converted down the turbine for 15k to drive speed. However this car used so much fuel it wasnt funny. The reason for this is that the turbine could not deliver power immediately so they just made a bigger turbine, which ate more gas.
Now if my thermo lectures are correct a Renkine cycle kicks out a ~35% efficiency and diesel kicks out ~60%. however, diesel gets a kick in the nuts in that there is a huge drop in efficiency due to all those neat mechanical properties.
So how are we getting ahead? Simple, the same way a little toyota gets better mileage than a dodge. The engine is not oversized and therefore does not waste energy.
efficiancy = (Work)/(energy used)
If we want to move 60 miles, that would be a work, if you use more energy than it would actually take to minimally move those miles you are putting more energy in than you need, efficiency drops even with you getting 60% conversion of gas to theoretical work.
You still haven't answered the question why is this more efficient at half the efficiency? Well if you can deliver what you need without oversizeing the engine for acceleration and 'power on demand' than you can use the absolute minimum of energy. Use a capacitor to store up that extra say 2% of power(over cruising needs) and use it instead of generally useing 50% more.
Yay for thermo... im so going to fail that class, cycles are kicking my ass. Props- Thermodynamics an engineering approach Yunus A Cengel, sixth edition 511, 572 -------------

Yeah, but with current gas prices and no hint of price decreases in the near future, it wouldn't take you long to run up a $5000 gas bill...

Thermo's not so bad. Well, yes it is. But if it's just a class and not your degree, all you need to worry about remembering is how to apply the second law to everything. Actually, "Real World Applications of the Second Law" should be two semesters unto itself.

So true. I was perusing a backissue of Geographic the other day and came upon a quote by a broad in Atlanta:

Originally by: Lithalnas however, diesel gets a kick in the nuts in that there is a huge drop in efficiency due to all those neat mechanical properties.
while its true that the fuel type and weight of the engine contribute for the fact that the diesel engien is not that efficient, it is still at least 10 to 15% more efficient than an equall gas engine.
it is also true that diesel fuel, altho with less calorific value than the gasoline per kg, it has more 15% energy per volume due to its density.
all in all, the diesel engine is a very capable engine with good efficiency, wich only drawbacks are its weight, usage of a heavier fuel and is a bit iffy if working on cold weather, wich requires pre-heating the engine first.
pros? more efficient, fuel is cheaper, it can run pratically on anything bar water with a few modifications (old, indirect injection engines work better here), and not so pollutant as you might thing (the black soot is caused due to worn injectors or faulty management sytstem).
More can be read about it here (from where I took some of the data). ---

I just don't see any point for these vehicles to exist. They have incredibly poor gas mileage, rarely if ever actually go offroad, and increase the risk of injury in an accident (not for the hummer driver obviously, but whatever they hit). They just seem like pointless vehicles that "let soccer moms feel like rock stars.*" In addition, it's poor gas mileage is partially responsible for increased gas prices that I have to pay, and I really don't feel like paying for someone else to feel like a rock star.

Look on the bright side, half the people driving them MEWed or HELOCed the **** out of their house to afford the privilege (and the boat it's pulling) and now they're treading water. The end of the current bout of ***** spread compression will be the icing on the cake. Poetic justice. Not that the Prius fad is much better, but that won't stop the really dumb ones trying to get the credit.

sorry but for the same price you can get so much more car but then again i can see why the hummer is so popular as many people use them for the daily commute thru the rugged back roads over mountains on the way to work right... Leave Rednecks out of this. That vehicle serves absolutely no purpose on a ranch or farm.
Hummers are 4x4's that never see dirt and are driven by rich and fancy folk who want to show of their rich and fancyness.
They're ugly and they have no real purpose. Same goes for the truck.
