They are far too few. Or at least, there aren't enough. I cannot find one single slot in the entire Sinq Laison region that has less than 20 days of waiting before researching actually starts.
This isn't fun and adds nothing positive to the gameplay whatsoever; it is merely downright irritating.
Your thoughts on this, please.

this is a lie all you have to do is look into losec and the far spanning systems of the region
if you have some problem thinking pirates camp every route to that losec system 24-7 then you can always look for a research alliance - theres quite a few that run heavy in that region

About the POS: We have one. What I mean is that people who might be in a small corp or no corp at all might also want to do material research sometime and this will be very difficult or rather impossible for those people without finding a corp who owns a POS.
Also, our POS is very far away from my current location.
And I looked into every system of the region, not bothering with sec rating. Zilch. The waiting time is between 20 and 60 days on each slot in each station listed in the region.

CCP doesn't believe it's broken, so they don't fix it.

it is not broken and there are research alliances for those who do not want to set up a pos themselves or go to the shorter waiting time out of the way systems

I believe it is possible to allow people access POS labs by configuring and standings (looks something like that). If I am not mistaken, you could query about the price to research at their slot(s). Understand some might be uncomfortable with this, but some may be willing to help out if the price is right.
I myself used a different method. Contracted with collateral the BPO to a corp, who put some very swift ME's into my rig BPO's. Price was greatly higher than in station, but it was still insignificant compared to waiting 30+ days in my area for ME slots to become available.
Just an idea, not sure if it is workable, or if it helps you at all..

There's always someone willing to eliminate your time worries if you throw enough money at the problem. There are research services available (guys with a few alts with level 5 research skills). If you want a high-sec POS, there are guys who'll join your corp to boost the corp standings, or sell you a corp with the standings and a few towers already anchored. If you just want a researched BPO, then offer enough money and someone will dredge up what you're looking for.
Lowsec normally has a much lower wait time, but not necessarily in your region. Broaden your search a little and see what's actually out there.
Or....You can just sit, wait and cry about it.
There's your options, kiddo.
(And Sing Liason had a few 12-16 day wait slots last I was there, but you won't find them in high-sec)

I agree there is a problem with research slots in stations, but I disagree that simply adding more slots is going to fix the problem. The problem isn't simply that you have to wait 20 days to do research, it is that you have to wait 20 days to do any amount of research. Whether its 1 day of ME research on a small ammo blueprint, or a full 30 days on a battleship blueprint you still have to wait the same amount of time to get started. Spending 21 days on one day of research is the real problem, not 50 days on 30 days of research.
I propose a system where all jobs at a NPC station run at the same time, but with penalties to speed proportional to the amount of research being done at the station. For example, suppose that a station has 10 ME slots, but there are 20 people who want to run jobs. All jobs will now run at the same time, but they will all take twice as long to complete.
For the newbie with a small ammo blueprint this isn't a big deal; 2 days of research sure as hell beats 21. However for the guy researching battleship blueprints his jobs take 60 days instead of 50 days. The older researchers now have a little more incentive to take their research (and money) to a POS research alliance, but the newbie can actually do research.
As an added bonus it it no longer most beneficial to always research for 30 days at a time, because you don't gain anything from doing so. 30 days of slow research with no queue is going to take 30 days no matter how you install it, 15 days now and 15 days later or all 30 at once.
Implementation might be a bit tricky, but thats why we pay CCP our monthly fees to do it for us
