Hello
I love EVE so much, but...
I really have problems with the skill training, cause in all other games i can affect the speed of my skills or levels by working for them, but in eve i can get away for a year (just change my skills) and come back as an uber pilot. The problem is that, i don't feel that i achive much while in game, sure i can make some isk, but still it does not feel like i'm gaining much. GTC trade is lureing, why should i sit here mining for 3 months, when i can just buy one GTC for 14 dollars and get the same result?
I don't like the idea of buying things to get ahead, but it's temping when everything costs so much and there is nothing else to do, but grind money.
I really hate to say it, but EVE skill training is an EPIC FAIL, in my eyes. For casual player's it's an epic win, but for a player like me, that spends 7 hours aday grinding (yes i love to grind), i feel like i'm not achiving anything. Why mine in the belt when i can play crysis and come back one month later and achive the same thing, theres just no logic in that.
No you can't have my stuff, i aint quiting. No i'm not jobless bum, i work from home with a telephone. No i don't sell magazines and i'm not a fortune teller.

Hi. I teach you a new trick. Go buy some GTCs and sell for ISKs through the secure GTCs web interface. Then buy a new high SP toon from the ISKs. Hope it helps. :) --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

I love the Skill System, because it takes away the grind. While I have no time to sped 7h per day on a game, I could imagin many many things to do, insteed of grinding missions or roids.

The problem is that you're still stuck in the mindset of a treadmill achievement-based MMOG. You're correct, you can't objectively achieve a lot, because Eve isn't about achievement. In traditional MMOGs, you are faced with a series of challenges that must be overcome in order to achieve X. In Eve, you create your own challenges and achievements, the entire point is to play the game. You do industry if you find that fun, not for X uber reward, you pewpew because it's fun, not because you have to do it to achieve X. Yes, you can set goals for yourself like owning X number of ships, but if you want to just shoot people and take their stuff without a real purpose, Eve lets you do that too.
Eve is a very open-ended game and that can be a bit shocking for people coming from other MMOGs, but it's not a failure, it's an invitation to explore that freedom and enjoy the game for its own merits instead of eternally chasing a carrot on a stick.

I'm sorry that eve's skill system doesn't work for you. I think its one of the coolest things about the game. Instead of having grind to conintue my progress, I can instead do whatever I want in game. Whether thats socialize, acquire wealth, or just chat it up with my corp mates.
I really hope it doesn't change.

Grind is an essential feature of any of these MMOs because they have to keep you playing and paying for as long a time as possible. In other MMOs you grind for skills, in this one you grind for money. I honestly don't see a difference - it is same grind for different things. Skill training in this game should not be your ultimate achievement. Characters can be bought and sold for ISK (which can be derived from rl money). Basing your sense of achievement on amount of sp your character has is just the wrong approach to EVE.
PS .. when you do quit, can i have your stuff? :)

I hate to tell you, but the skill training is a primary aspect of what makes EVE what it is, generally those who dislike it are the ones that are usually capable of putting 8 hours of gameplay a night, which would normally give them a leg up on the grind'o'meter. Maybe EVE just isn't for you. ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

Two points really.
Firstly eve has grind, its just decaff.
Secondly, going away for a year and comming back does not make you an uber pilot. It takes more than simple SP to be good at anything.

You couldnt be more wrong, unless your just doing PVE in which case bah you could probably get away with it. For PVP however, you could have a 900000 million sp char (slight exageration :P) but if you dont knwo what your doing, which takes time and effort to learn, youll die every time to anyone that is an experienced pilot. Theres plenty of 'lol ebay' stories to prove that :)
Seems your going about your thinking from a very self beneficial point of view to, how about joining a corp/alliance and working with others towards bigger goals? Grinding just for yourself doesnt get you much further than sat in a pretty ship with nowhere to go other than your lvl x agent or a belt of veldspar :P
EVE is what you make it :)

I'm anything but a casual player, and EvE's skill training is an EPIC WIN for me. Every second that I can devote to actually playing the game instead of grinding skills = value for money.
You said it yourself: you love to grind. Grind yourself a few bill and buy yourself an '03 character. There: you ground yourself some SP.

EVE is a EPIC success because of the skill based system. I personally have many obligations to God,family and work(Ok!..I'm semi-retired I admit )in that order. The skill based system allows me to advance and enjoy a MMO for a change, without the mind-numbing pressure and time consuming drudgery of grinding levels
EVE is a sandbox. EVE is not a mountain.
A friend of mine is begging me to play "Pirates of the Burning Seas" when it is launched in a couple of months. I really like the pirate genre(like many)and was very interested until he said it was level based. And then I thought to myself EVE with it's skill based system would allow me the luxury of exploring another game and I wouldn't lose any real time. If I so choose.
What other MMO offers that kind of flexibilty?
Sincerly,I'm not trying to invalidate your opinion. Give it some time and a chance and try to see the positives that it offers.
Cheers

This is going to sound flipant and stupid at first read but, don't do that. You choose how you feel, not Eve, not some pirate that stole your ship or not some one on the forums that asks "Can I have your stuff?"

You love to grind...
but you hate to grind for isk.
You love to grind for skills....
but not for isk.
How is grinding for skills (in other games) any different then grinding for isk in EVE? There are other ways than mining.

Quit your complaining! If this only affected you, sure maybe it would be something you could blather on about. But every single person who plays this game goes through the exact same thing!
That is the great thing about this game--essentailly everyone is equally vulnerable.
Look if its really that big a deal to you, go play your other games. For the rest of us, achieving the next level of a skill is an accomplishment of patience.
Let's try an experiment shall we? Randomly give all but 10mil to random people you see (if I were you I'd start with the people in this thread). Then, go away for a year and just train skills without doing anything else. Then, come back one year from today, and send me a mail and we will fight. Then you can decide if there really is no reason to play throughout the year. |

Edited by: Daelin Blackleaf on 13/11/2007 03:32:20 Step 1: Accept that EVE is not the typical MMO Step 2: Ignore that and grind oodles of ISK Step 3: Buy learning implants Step 4: Focus your training on a small area of the game. Step 5: Buy faction/officer gear Step 6: Enjoy your reward for grinding like crazy by easily defeating players who have been playing since release using your uber gear and equal skills. Step 7: Lose all your stuffs to a gate camp Step 8: Go back to Step 1 or throw a hissing fit, post something unpleasant on the forums, and cancel your account.
There is a place for grinders in EVE. But you first have accept that you will not keep your stuffs if you actually intend to do anything with them. That doesn't stop you from grinding to the point where you can constantly fit +5 implants and gain a skill-point edge on everyone else however.
I don't go in for it myself, though I do spend a lot of quiet time harvesting ISKies for my little projects, but if it is your cup of tea there are opportunities out there.

Mostly I like being able to "level" while not logged in since I don't have that much time to play. But every now and then wish I could do something to "grind" out a skill faster. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes
