I was looking into buying a new computer this Christmas, specifically a notebook that is DirectX 10 ready so I can play EVE with the new graphics engine. I'm not too great with computers though so I was wondering if anyone has any advice concerning pre-built laptops (since I couldn't build one on my own if my life depended on it! )
I'd rather not spend $5,000 on a laptop.... I tihnk $4,500 would be the absolute max.
Also, I have some general computer questions. What is the advantage of a quad core over a dual core processor? What is the advantage of having 2x Graphics card over one? Why do some companies like voodoo think they can get away with charging people thousands of dollars for a brand name? ----True bravery is not lacking fear, but confronting it.----

Edited by: Phantom Slave on 14/11/2007 04:16:06 You won't need DX10 for Trinity. It's DX9, although later on they are planning on a DX10 expansion.
Quad-Core processors are generally more 'future proof' because as new software comes out that better utilizes multi-core processors, the quad-core (4 cores) will be faster than 2.
Personally, for Gaming laptops, I'd go with a local company here called PC Laptops. Lifetime warranty on both hardware AND software. Get some crappy spyware on your pc and don't want to deal with it? Take it on down and they'll fix it for free. Plus they have some of the fastest laptops around.
If you don't have a company like this near you, then Alienware has some of the best gaming laptops around, but they are really expensive. $4,500 will get you a very VERY nice laptop.
There isn't a big enough bonus for using 2 video cards. 2 nVidia 8800 GTSs barely outperform an 8800 GTX, and the GTX is about $200 cheaper than buying 2 GTS's.
Brand names are just that, brand names. There's nothing fancy about them other than the logo on the outside of their case. ____________________

Try 1500 and you MIGHT have a deal. I mean, seriously, that 4k laptop will be worth less than 2k next year, and 1k the year after. But hey, if you can afford to waste money like that, more power to you !
P.S. DX10/Vista is way overrated. DX9c/XP is much better/safer/stable/FASTER right now.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 14/11/2007 06:21:37 4000? You're insane, you can get pretty much the best you can want for about 2000 dollars absolute max (anything above that and you'll be buying something so heavy and hot you might as well get a desktop...).
I'd recommend CyberPowerPC--their prices are superb for both laptops and desktops and they are reasonably customizable.
You can't get quadcores or multiple graphics cards in a laptop at the moment, and even if you could, it would be a terrible idea; there'd be no way to cool it.
Also note that DX10 is totally pointless at the moment on a notebook, given that no graphics card below an 8800 can play DX10 mode on DX10 games at an acceptable framerate without compromising far more important graphics settings.

Exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for. I'm leaning towards the Sager right now. I'm not too sure why the 2x 7950 GTX SLI is more expensive than the 2x 8700 SLI though. Same thing with the dual core EXTREME!!!!! processors compared with the quad core.
