Amarr suck!
Its all over the boards complaints that Amarr are the worst race, no-one plays them (well except for about 16% of the pop) and their ships are all the worst (or at least not the best at everything). Well my theory as to why Amarr are the unloved race of Eve has nothing to do with the stats you can find posted elsewhere.
Why no-one plays Amarr can be narrowed down the following: They are ugly. They are the jerks of Eve. They donĘt appeal to players from other MMORPGs.
First the ugly bit. Gallente are the visually appealing race with big jugs for the basement dweller factor, see through clothes and pretentious facial tattoos. Minmatar take care of the badass look for all the Samuel L. Jackson wannabes out there. Caldari are boring but in their plainness essentially manage to cover the stock standard "action hero" look. Amarr on the other hand are a bunch of wizzened old farts, the prevalence of hoodies to cover their ugly faces is no coincidence. You can muck around with the character generator for an hour trying to get a face that you donĘt expect to be screaming at you to get off their lawn and come chasing you with a cane, or just slap a hood over the top and hope everyone thinks of you as a monk assassin.
Now as to why they are the Jerks of Eve. Religious Fanatic Slavers. Gee whats not to like? Religious is an instant turn-off to a good slice of players, fanatic doubles that effect, who wants to be compared to abortion clinic bombers and aeroplane crashers? Slavers just really puts the icing on the cake for popularity contest winners, all they needed was some swastikas in their logo and a motto like "we molest babies" to be the most loved group ever.
Minmatar get the underdog and heroic freedom fighter tag, basically they are the Rebel Alliance to the Evil Empire of the Amarr. What could be more appealing than sticking it to the man?
Gallente may be Frenchies but they donĘt have quite so much of the cheese eating surrender monkey aura about them, and being advocates of free will and siding with the Minmatar still makes them the good guys of Eve.
Caldari are the capitalists of Eve and whilst a bit on the nationalistic side they also fought an independence war themselves freeing themselves from the Gallente, so get to side against the Frenchies without being the fundy Amarr. Also from their racial description they are apparently the boys with the toys and lets face it, if you are here, you are a nerd, which pretty much ensures mentioning things like "most technologically advanced" is going to tickle your fancy.
Finally the view from other MMORPGs. I will use WoW for example here as in unlikely chance you havenĘt played its sheer popularity is such that I doubt anyone is completely ignorant of its mechanics, furthermore, many of the concepts are the same across other MMORPGs. Generally when picking a side in and MMORPG you are stuck with that faction/team/race and the allegiances that come with it. Ie. DonĘt pick a troll and expect a daily waltz through Ironforge unscathed. Eve's system of start as anyone, go anywhere, learn anything is great for flexibility but it blows for realism and certainly wasnĘt what I expected when signing up. So assuming someone looking to join Eve has done their reading, http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2//pdf/eve_v1.4_white.pdf like the story and want to play, Amarr for the above reasons really doesnĘt look that good. The only thing going for them is they apparently own 40% of known space, so depending on your view it means lots of safe area, or play against and always have a target.
Hopefully when faction warfare gets put in the final idea stops being a concept and becomes a reality, sure its fun to jaunt off to Gallente space for a crate of Quafe but it would be even more fun if I was dodging the Gallente navy at the same time. In the meantime i cant see anything to recommend Amarr and its nothing to do with their ships.

My decision process for a race was pretty close to what you describe.
Day 1.
Okay so what we got here...
Religious slaver nutjobs! Yeah right! Brainwashed capitalist swine. Hmm. Rather not. Democratic freedom loving liberals. Sounds good!
Or
Former slaves now fighting for the freedom of the brothers and sisters remaining under the yoke of said religious slaver nutjobs.
Perfect!
DidnĘt like the Samuel L Jackson look so I went with pasty white boy. The description of the Sebiestor as most technically inclined of the Minmatar tribes sealed it.

Nope, nope. If we had an excellent Star Wars mmo out there (I am not SWG hater btw) I'd play an Imperial for sure. However, the Amarr?
Number one, they're ugly, number two religious fanatics? Please there is no way to make me not want to play a character race more than to describe them as religious and then add "fanatic."
The slaver thing just seals the deal if you will.

I must admit when i first started eve (back in beta) i started a minnie character, but after spending 20 mins trying to kill the tutorial drone (damn not knowing about ranges and stuff back then) I decided that they were really pants and gave up on eve.
When I came back to eve a year later my main memory of it was how disappointed I was by the minnies and their weapons, so the amarr who think of them as slaves at best really appealed to me and every knows lasers are cool of course.
Sadly now looking back I really wish I'd given minnies a chance as they're much more in keeping with my out look on life and sooo much cooler than the offspring of the church and the empire. |

I thought that the only purpose of selecting your race and bloodline was to determine your avatar picture, starting stats and skills.
Cause I don't see any of this "evil empire" stuff in the game.
And when walking in stations is released and we able to buy clothes for our characters, everyone will be able to go all emo and hide their faces under a hood in that cute teenage angsty way.

I picked Caldari because at the time I could be on the same side as the guy that introduced me to Eve - didn't know I could change sides/factions ect I just went Caldari. If I could reroll I would be Amarr - they scream badass in their pictures and victories would be sweeter knowing you were winning with the "unloved and crappy race".

I picked Amarr because the folks I started with were Amarr, too. I wanted a miner/industrialist and the Ni-Kunni were fitting for my image of underdogs that worked themselves up the food chain, a dour miner that considers the industrial work to be a holy duty that shouldn't be tainted by slave's hands.
Anyways. I think the Amarr do have a image problem. Maybe they should shift a bit from the everything-that-is-bad-about-religion to a more insightful, spiritual outlook. With the emperor dead there'll be a successor war anyways and that'd be the perfect opportunity to change the Amarr empire into a new direction.

I created an Amarr character because it let me create an avatar picture that looked most like me IRL - well it needs a beard but close enough
So ... old? .... ugly? .... err ... OK guilty as charged
In any case the Amarr back story has such opportunites for cod-roleplay that I couldn't resist.

I really think the Amarr should get something like a "dark side bonus", to get them nearer to their described role. I mean, if they can't field an adequate number of capsuleers, they won't be the largest empire for long. I believe every "stat *****" should get a reason to play Amarr, not Achura. Nerf me pretty please. :)
I was rather disappointed when I chose the Caldari character (only after finding out about the Achur) and learned that it is actually the most played race.

I don't give a damn about the game lore, I made an informed decision regarding the stats/starting skills for this character after trying caldari for a week(my friend told me they were awesome and it didn't take me long to discover that they suck for solo).
Though I now would not mind if my character was minmatar or one of the other gallente. I have nothing against asians, but it sucks that you need to pick an asian character to have the best starting attributes. They need to make it so the attributes are more balanced, or that you can customize them further imo.

Happy with my character, I look badass (in my opinion) with a slight resemblance to Morpheus from The Matrix im told (and agree). And I love my stats (mainly perception and willpower), and also my sig also stats another reason why im Minmatar. Which conveniently is indistinguishable from my post except I don't think it has any grammer errors. Definition of Minmatar, former slaves who built ships from duct tape and scraps of rusted metal, who rose up against their master's and emerged victorious. And further proof the Ammar suck. |

No, it's some of the Amarr that look like the tough guys, the action heroes, the soldiers. Like the "I am not ugly" guy below, or the Sheriff.
