Maybe this isn't really the best forum, but this post is Corp related and it seems like a lot of knowledgable players post here. (read: shameless attempt to butter up forum regulars in a lame attempt to ensure a response)
So hypothetically speaking, say myself and a group of 6-8 friends from another game came over and started playing EvE. Say we got some skills up, made some cash, formed a corp, and were finally ready to have some fun.
How do we get into PvP to learn what the hell it's all about and get our newbie asses blown up a few dozen times so we can actually earn half a clue on this stuff?
The trick is that we don't want to accidently **** someone off that we may not want to **** off later. For example, JF seems like a great corp to go around trying to blow up, but...err..what if they turn out to tough or something and us, in our infinite newbie wisdom, had no idea. (Hey, they all looked like girls, how tough could they be?!)
Blowing up innocent miners and such is of ZERO interest to us. We play these types of games for the challenge that comes with PvP combat, not so we feel good about ourselves for drygultching some afk indy. The lure of being Rat hunters is a strong one(like the PK hunters in UO from days of yore) but that seems just too cliche'd even for ourclueless selves. Not everyone can wear the white hat, so we're more then happy to put on headgear hued with various shades of grey.
But how do we get into a conflict? How do we get into the *right* conflict? Joining an alliance would seem like one possibility, but I am not sure we'd want to be associated with anyone who would have us. (apologies to Mr. Marx...insincere ones at least)
We've got our frigates loaded to the gills and are ready throw ourselves against overwhelming odds in a desperate and dramatic attempt to stand up against the great injustices of the galaxy(or something)...but but...where do we go? It seems like all you folks here are having a blast with end game politics and PvP and....*pouts* we wanna play too, damnit!
Any advice at all? Okay, any good advice?

Make sure you have full insurance on the frigates and go at it untill you start to understand best load outs and tactics.
Take a look at the ships forum on here to give you some ideas on good load outs.
Other than that its a case of pick on someone and learn from the consequences.

The first thing anyone needs to learn about pk in any game is that you have to commit. Doesn't make sense to think that you want to be able to pk yet not commit to killing anyone for fear of making the "wrong choice".
Knowing that, I'd suggest CFS to start out with. Fly around there and you'll pick up a few things and probably never get blown up. --- The Tarsis Shriners |

Oh, make no mistake. We're all about burning bridges. But we must at least have some real or imagined slight to provoke us to that point.
And we spend plenty of time shooting missles and stuff at each other. But frigate on frigate isn't the same as frigate on cruiser/battleship, and that's what we're hoping to learn. I imagine we'll pick things up pretty quick once we're in the thick of things, it's just getting into the thick that's the problem.

Restan, please take a look at the oc-academy. This is a corp which is setup to teach new players (or players who haven't done any PvP before) the basics in PvP. We don't claim to be all knowing. But we can teach you the basics and let you have fun without having the risk of losings assets.
If interested contact me in game, and i can answer your questions

Any tips on decent PvP corps that are looking for self-sufficient eager and willing novices who are long on passion but short on seat time? Are there even corps out there looking for some cannon fodder if they know that fodder may go do it's own thing some day? (We'd have to be upfront with them about our plans)

Well first you have to buy a good PVP character on ebay like certain other pvp corp guys did. Then pretend your cool because someone else did all the work and you have 11 mil skill points.

Fly around in a frigate that suits your skill set.
Keep flying a frigate, kill people until you don't really die that much, then buy a cruiser.
Repeat.
Then buy a battleship.
