This is my situation: Periodically, although not often, while jet-can mining someone comes along and turns my can. Typically the offender is a rifter although rarely it can be an intercepter.
What I'd love to have is a ship in the ready which an alt can warp into the asteroid belt and shoot down the offender.
Now for some specifics: - I only have 4M sps and T1 ships - Caldari - If you look up carebear in the dictionary you will see me. I have no PVP experience under my belt. - I'm not afraid to loose some ships learning the ropes
So can anyone recommend a ship (and setup) that I should have at the ready?

Short range ships, high damage, fast tracking.
Plant a Blaster Ferox on top of the can (less than 2km from it), put 2x 2point warp scrams and a web in the mids, lock them as soon as the get close and as soon as they flash turn on the scrams and mids.
Of course this is assuming you will use an alt to do it. Will melt even cruisers really fast and if you train Mining Director and put a gang link on it can help increase your yield.

OP:
Unless you have multiple accounts and use them simultaneously, don't bother. The only effective deterrent against theft is available firepower waiting right at the digsite. You park a guard alt on the can and target anyone who approaches. That's the only way you'll ever catch a person attempting it. Otherwise, just record their identity and see if they're part of a reputable corp or not. If they are, report it to their CEO. If not, War Dec them or see if other miners in the area are willing to help pay for a GOOD merc to War Dec them.

I have a second account so what I was hoping for was to stop whatever mission my main is going, swap to a PVP ship, and attack while he's still red to me. Can a Caracal take down a fast frigate?

With 4M SP? No. In empire? No.
Your target will warp as fast or faster then any support you can bring in. If you don't have deterrent on site, so that you web/scram him the second he goes red and unleash hell immediately there-after, you won't get him. You probably won't anyway because if you force him to turn and fight he probably will turn out to have better weaponry and will simply destroy your ships now that you've given him the legal capacity to do so.
Half the time, ore-thieving in empire is about provoking a fight, not making off with a can full of veld.

Your answer would be no, based on what you have here. As mentioned, ore flippers are about provoking a fight. If they wanted to make off with your ore, they'd bring an indy. If they're wanting to provoke a fight, and as you admitted you're a carebear with no PvP experience, the answer would be do not fight. In fact, do nothing. Shut off your lasers and just sit there until the thief leaves, preferably leaving the system. Let him know by this action that you will not fight him and you will not take back from his can to start a fight. The thief will be bored with you and leave. |

hey I tried that in kindergarden and it worked. It must be legit.
But seriously he right if you have a hauler taking your stuff then you'll be fine just to leave the ceptor/frig alone. He will leave.
Or you can do it the cool way and pull out your light drones and WhaBAM you have a ceptor kill in a mining ship. You get to be the uber coolest guy on your killboard and it's a good smalltalk subject.
OR you can get really fancy and have your fleet of black op pilots sitting around you waiting for your signal then they all engage. For every pvp you accomplish in high sec you get 2 star points and 4!!!!! rainbow sparkles.
I don't really know much about mining because I was never one but I have thieves and you if you pop him give me a holler for some props Amarr Recon/Electronics Attack Ship/almost Black Ops pilot for auction |

why not just train your alt for a hauler, then just stick a bookmark in the jet can and while you keep shuffling ore into the can you pick it up with your hauler alt!
Unless there are BM thievs around to steal all the bookmarks ^^ IMO, that would be the best way, you will not risk any ships trying to gank the ore thief, and no-one can steal out of your hauler so.

I can't tell how much of this post is joke, or legit. :)
Most ore can flippers I've encountered, even when I was on the ore can flipping side, are pretty impatient. They will wait 10 minutes, maybe 20 or 30 at the most. If you don't want to sit there, then leave. Do a mission or something. But a fight is just what they want. Yes, they do also leave if you do nothing. Just because you did it in kindergarten, doesn't mean it won't work in Eve. Mind you, I actually have some mining experience, so it's not like I'm completely talking theoretical bull here.
And as far as the "cool way" by trying to take out ceptor in a mining ship with drones, that is probably the easiest way to get yourself popped. Cause even if it worked, then his three gang members decloak in HACs and blast you fast. (or whatever)
Sorry. Had to say that, as I wasn't entirely sure if you were completely joking. But I get from your post that you agree with me and you can't really expect to win a fight back. |

Dear Solock,
For the safety of your mining work i recommend you to use a password lockable container. If you left cargo out in the open there will always be someone to hook it and go away. There is nothing i can't steal...
Good luck!

And doing this would be why you are poor.
Secure can spam tends to draw down the wrath of real miners who get real annoyed when real cowards dump cans on every field they see.
Then to top it off those same cowards come on the forums and bemoan the fact that jet cans hold ten times more then secure cans so.

There is an answer which no one mentioned: use your alt with a brain.
Take your alt, in a combat ship - and after the "thief" flips the can.. you flip it back, or just take the minerals.
If you aren't strong enough to fight with your alt - just use a frig or something that is stabbed up... flip the can then dock..
And if your alt happens to be in a corp different from your main - then that'll give a couple corps kill rights on the thief.

fit a warp scram and missles to your osprey + drones also, if you have a combat alt/a friend have him drop the can. Any 'good' can flipper with check to see who is is stealing from.
I've baited can-flippers with a whole gang aligned to the belt and a couple barges in the belt.
We get the heads up from the miners when someone warps in, and we he goes for the can, we warp in.
its just like CONCORD, you can prevent can-flipping but you can provide repercussions.

If all all the jet can pirate has is a frig, just how much ore do you think he can steal?

I use industrials to steal (and always look around), but its just for fun, and if the cargo exceeds 1 mil. as a value. Once a moron had left some valuable cargo out in the open. I suspected he was nearby...and he was at about 500 km, out of sight range, but continuasly scanning for pirates. I saw him, but he didn't knew that. I jumped in my Iteron and fitted 2 WCS, then stole the cargo... Obviously, he arived when i was warping out...got me targeted before, but i wasn't in a hurry ...and the inevitable happened... I warped out and docked!

If you plan on just "warping in" forget it. By the time you leave the belt they'll be gone and there will most likely be a nice gang in there place waiting for you to even attempt to do something.

LOL - WCS's ftl
I once stole a bookmark from a Megathron fitted with webs and blasters in an Iteron IV without the use of WCS's :P. I also stole from my CEO's alt (in a different corp) in the same iteron IV, while he was in a HAC :P. The best way to stop thieves is just to use an alt in an industrial to take the ore from the can as you mine it. Anyone who believes otherwise, feel free to message me with the location of your camped can (preferably near oursulaert) =======================
