I got the linux client working on PCLinuxOS. Works pretty good. There is a slight FPS hit compared to Windows which is well documented here.
My question is how are the folks using linux handling the case where their corp or alliance has standardized on ventrilo for voice comms?
My choices seem to be:
a) get a second cheap pc or virtual PC that runs windows and vent
b) not use vent (not a choice really, need to have voice comms)
c) get my alliance to use teamspeak or some other linux friendly client (ya that's going to happen)
d) find and join corp that uses teamspeak
e) get vent running on linux using wine (not having much luck with this)
Eve is the last thing keeping me from ditching my windows partition so any help would be appreciated.

What issues do you have getting it going via Wine? Not tried it myself, but might be able to help.

I have no issues with vent 2.3.0 or 3.0.0 on wine-0.9.49 on Gentoo/Linux AMD64
Well, the only issue I had was upgrading - I have to manually erase the vent reg keys before it would install and 2.3.0 refused to un-install.

Personally my corp/alliance use teamspeak, so having native linux client is nice. HOWEVER, we used to use ventrilo, and while somewhat clunky, it does work via wine AND there IS a fix script to get it working when not focused, so under wine it will run okay as well. (ubuntu forums had a good thread on getting vent working, and linux-gamers.net also had a faq on it. ventrilo forums as well.
My solution from way back is to use my cheapo' laptop sitting off to the side. I don't have to mess with overlays or one program crashing while I'm in fullscreen eve on the main machine. I can glance over at see who's talking and such and back on the wine-vent days, I didn't have to have it defocused which made using it even simpler as there was no need for a script to 'fix' it.
With older (not ancient) laptops going for dirt cheap, it is a viable option.

I'll give it another shot and post my errors when I have them.
At the moment I'm trying to reinstall wine using synaptic/apt and it wants to uninstall eve because it thinks it's broken.

Synaptic probably thinks the Cegeda components of the official EVE clients is a botched Wine install. I'd let it tidy the Cegeda stuff out of the way personally and try the vent' software in Wine. Then I'd try installing the Windows version of EVE... in wine and see if the two will happily co-exist.
Then, if you do want to use the official client, uninstall Windows-EVE and install the deb file for Cegeda-Eve.
I can't, honestly, see the sense in trying to get two "abstraction layers" to work together during the "does it work" testing, it just adds layers of complication to figuring out what went bang and why.

EVE Voice works and is built into the EVE client... it's free... yeah... I'd go with that.
