Recently I picked up 2x1GB sticks of ram to upgrade my old box (from 512MB). It is Hynix PC3200 400mhz DDR2 to go on a KX600 Pro motherboard. The chip is an AMD 2800XP+. I plug in the DIMMs and fire it up. The memory pasts POST and lets me get into XP Pro. I fire up Eve anxious to see my performance boost. I log in, select character, start entering the station, and poof! Computer reboots. I re-seat memory and try again. This time it reboots just as I get into XP. Next I pull out one stick and it works fine. I play Eve for a couple of hours and it works fine. Better then fine as I can now switch between Even and Vent without my hard drive going into convulsions. I put the second stick in another computer and it works fine. For some reason the system just isn't stable with both sticks even though both sticks seem to be fine by themselves. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? PS I am not trying to overclock anything and I can confirm this is not related to over heating.

Memtest86. I bet one of your sticks is bad. You should return it if it fails Memtest. --- Proud Amarr pilot.

OK a couple of things, first of all you don't have DDR2 RAM as that board doesn't support it.
Secondly what FSB is you board posting at?
I ask because:
If the FSB of your CPU is 200 MHz, the memory speed supports only DDR 266 If the FSB of your CPU is 266/333/400 MHz, the memory speed supports DDR 266/333/400
Now the FSB of an AMD 2800 is supposed to be 333 but your BIOS may over right this is you "played" with the settings.
Reboot and see what FSB your comp is posting at. -- eve-guides.com Includes all about POSs, outposts, tech II production, item database and much much more. |

Thanks for the suggestion.
I've run Microsoft's Memory Diagnostics against them (had it on hand) and both did fine on several passes. They both work fine when run separately, but once they are put in the same box it just becomes unstable.
I know that when you put in two sticks to runs differently (slightly faster) then one stick of twice the size (ie two one gig sticks will run better then a 2 gig stick).
The lowest voltage my board offers is 2.65. I've tried bumping it up to 2.7, but no difference. It goes higher, but I didn't want to fry the whole kit.

During POST it says the memory is running at 400. Is that what you mean or cpu and multiplier?

CPU BUS Speed = FSB (or near enough) -- eve-guides.com Includes all about POSs, outposts, tech II production, item database and much much more. |

Ahh just noticed there's a BIOS upgrade that improves 400Mhz memory stability.
What version is your BIOS - it will be one of the following:
R3.05 R3.03b R3.03 R3.01 R106a(Beta) R1.04 R1.02 R1.00

have you tried really pounding the crap out of it? like running 3dmark?
i allways do this on new machines to stress test it before i play solitaire

BIOS says:
CPU Clock Ration: 12.5 CPU Host: 166 CPU:AGP:PCI Clock Ratio: 5:2:1
This makes it run at 2.08G (so says literal XP) which is what is supposed to do.
The BIOS I'm running is 1.06, the one right below the beta. The feature of the beta I don't need. Its been running at 400 stable for a few years with the earlier mod.
For some reason I think the answer to your question is: 333.
I apreciate all the suggestions. Even the one from that Hydra scum. :)
