I have looked at a lot of the pictures, but still can't figure out exactly what goes on there. I would love to go just to be around some other people who play Eve. (My friends think its "dorky", and I think I am only one out of three people in the state of Oklahoma who know how to use a PC.)
It looks like a bunch of people sitting around playing cards/Eve on some Apple's. What else is there? Presentations? Tourneys? I would love to go next year, but it better be pretty damn cool to drop 600 bucks on :) I've never been to any kind of fanfest, so enlighten me please!

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 16/11/2007 02:54:06 My time in Iceland has been the most edifying experiences I've had this year. The Fanfest is only part of the overall experience, although by itself it's still pretty epic, and pictures don't do it justice (as I've attempted to explain to my brother when I showed him my pictures from there.)
Also if you're traveling there from America (since you commented on expenditures), plan on spending no less than 100 dollars a day, because on top of getting shafted on the exchange rate Iceland has a high cost of living to begin with, which only makes things worse for us Yankees.

Well when I went the first year there were some dudes (geeks) from some crowd called CCP talking about some internet spaceships or something but I was far to drunk to listen.
Bars stay open until 6am, you can get breakfast and bed in your hotel after a hard night and mornings drinking.
Did I mention drink yet? overall was awesome except I went all the way to Iceland to have fun and party and meet some Icelandic women and ended up meeting a American:(
(Really its about drinking and having fun, you can ofc bring your laptop and play eve but imo the idea is to get away and have fun ( eve or drink and a good laugh..easy choice bring on the beers)

Yeah I should probably say the only days I was sober for any appreciable time was Thursday (because you have to be sober at Blue Lagoon) and Monday (because my flight left that day... on a related note, if you can afford it, stay an extra day after Fanfest ends in order to better explore Reykjavik)

ôWar is not the dreadful end to all things as mankind fears. Conflict brings balance to nature as it adapts, mutates, and transforms itself into something stronger than before. Mankind is the master of nature because we can choose those mutations on our own accord. We can accelerate the inevitable dominance of a species. Through war, we can make ourselves stronger at the time and place of our choosing. War is not hell, far from it. War is beautiful. Honestly, when explaining it to people at work I always have to say "it's not as lame as it sounds", because most people expect it to look like Comic-Con or something. There's a focus on socializing instead of playing EVE, so there's not like a hundred PCs set up for people to jump online and mine. Who the hell flies a zillion clicks to play a game they could just as easily (and cheaply) stayed home to do?
Lots of developer seminar type things to attend, giving you a sneak peak at upcoming features or filling in the blanks on existing ones. Lots of stuff to buy, and again, a frackload of people to meet and drink with.
Check my blog out, I was writing up daily reports of what happened this year while I was there. Might shed some light on it for you. :)

I heard it somewhere on the forums so I looked up a Dominoes in Reykjavik. A large pizza is 2450 Kronurs, so I got on a currency calculator and it turned out to be 2450 Kronurs = 40.07 USD.
How much did you yankees end up spending by the time the thing was over and you were back home? I need a ballpark figure to try to save up to.

I'd not have it any other way, thermally heated pool with rain and huge waves! They should add a sprinkler and a wavemachine.

I went on the Trip and quiet honestly was a completely different experience to last year. Obviously there were 90-100 EVE nutters all running out into the cold, oh so cold night and into the geothermal pools, The wind was so hard and cold at some points the water was being blow off the top of the water and freezing almost instantly. This had the effect of being accupunctured regularly.
Was an absolute blast though, I hope they do it again next year. ------------- Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected])

I'm just throwing this idea out there, since I haven't actually heard any apologies about the Blue Lagoon side-trip. When we were there the weather was worse than at any other time at Fanfest. Howling wind, horizontal rain, and an air temperature I suspect was in the low thirties without taking wind-chill into account. You have to take a shower before entering the lagoon, which means being soaking wet while you walk the fifty feet or something from the heated building out through the elements towards the water.
From my time in the army I've learned that there's two primary kinds of suck: the traumatic kind that haunts you for months that you never want to talk about or experience again, and the kind that's worth calling home about to say "dude you'll never guess what I just did, it totally SUCKED! ". Walking about in freezing temperatures soaking wet in a foreign country is the second kind of suck. I'd do it again for sure.
