Okay, as an example, last night me and a buddy took a break from the lately constant pvp and jumped into our covert ops's and decided to do some exploration. To be honest the only PVE that is remotely interesting as you never know what you are going to get and some complexes can be a true challenge with a small group to clear up.
So here's the problems/questions I currently have (mind you we did alot of exploring in the past)
1.)We probed out a total of 32 0.0 systems and in not 1 did we find anything but "unknown" signatures.
It seems that lately the number of profession sites has dropped dramaticly. Is this just bad luck or did something change with regards to the number of profession sites?
2.) The difference between an actual "complex" and an "encounter" is clear to me, however... I drop a multispectral probe in a system and regardless whether I set the probe to Cosmic Anomaly or Cosmic Signature it will always report an "unknown" signature. Now in this way I can never clearly distinguish whether there is an actual complex in local or just encounters. I could be probing for hours and never know for sure if theres nothing there? Why on earth dont encounters get a different signature? As follows:
Unknown: An actual complex with a rating from 1 to 10 Deadspace: Encounter with chance of escallation Radar: Hacking profession site. Ladar: Gascloud site. Magnetometric:Archaeology profession site. Gravimetric: Hidden Astroid belt.
I have not been able to find 1 actual complex since the deadspace encounters where introduced, are they even still there? Can I still find the 10/10 complexes of old? Or have they been removed from the game all together.
Somebody have some answers or additional questions they'd like to add to this thread?

Haven't done exploration for a while, but I think that Cosmic Anomaly are encounters and Cosmic Signatures are complexes

multispec probes are currently "bugged" and show CAs as unknown even if CA is not selected in in the scanner.
As for the distinct lack of anything other than "unknown" sites, well, it may be a bug in their distribution as I would have expected you to find something out of 32 systems. However, there is a theory that the distribution algorithm used by CCP decides the type of site to spawn on an equal chance basis. i.e. there is an equal chance that the site will be, radar, grav, magnetometric etc.
As players tend to cherry pick the radar, grav and mag sites, and leave the unknowns, the unknowns get left cluttering the systems as nobody runs them (they are pretty worthless other than the DED ones). It is thought the total number of exploration sites is fixed so if an unknown is sitting in space for 3 days, that is 3 days where a radar, mag, or grav site is not able to spawn.
At least that's the theory from the observed distribution.
Obviously CCP are keeping quiet on the exact mechanics of how it operates.

Thanks for the responses, helpfull. Any word on a fix for the bugged Multispecs? Or is this the way CCP intended it to be?

I don't know where did you exactly scanned, but if it is in Providence then there can be several things that explain it.
1. Providence is widely populated. In PXIN alone we have several people doing regular sweeps of our constellation and the region. That leads to very small window of opprotunity for each player to find a site and explore it. As far as I can tell I was probing one site that you must have been finishing up, as the site just disappeared even from multispec as you left local ;)
2. Some strange distribution pattern of sites. When I begun exploring in Provi, doing usual R3->N8->...->R3 circle, visiting the pockets of course I usually found radar sites and not much more. Next week there was a mix of hacking and grav sites, in more or less equal proportions. Week after - no hacking at all, magnetometric all over the place, couple of gravs. Some time after that only some gravi was present. And now very, very empty.
The stuff in p.2. leads me to belive that there is some distribution algorithm which shuffles availible sites from region to region to keep distribution of proffesion goods more or less equal in the cluster.
Unfortunately, I was away from eve for almost a month so my data is a bit old and misses quite a big time, so I do not think it is possible to dicern any pattern at the moment.
So to sum it up: don't worry, and hope that in future there will be more sites in Provi :) (and maybe catch if you venture there)

I had the same thing, at first there was lots of sites, then none at all. However, I then gave it a few days and starting finding sites again.
I put it down to either other people finding the sites first (Grrrr, GET ORF MOI LAND! ) OR the random chance of sites respawning somewhere I dont currently scan and then waiting for someone else to finish them to give them a chance of coming back.
To ease this a bit, I found 4 different nearby constellations, in different directions and near 0.4 space which have relatively light traffic to scan when one of them go empty on me.
Give it a few days and try to avoid scanning at the weekend -------------------------------------

This is what I think is happening as well. Since it's a huge pain in the ass to distinguish between a true 'unknown' and a Cosmic Anomaly at this point most people just leave the unknowns. There was a system I did recently where I found *three* plexes before finding the grav site I was actually looking for.
Also, you might try probing around in lowsec? It's been my experience that highsec exploration is pretty worthless due mostly to all the people doing exploration in highsec. Not sure about 0.0, haven't spent much time out there, but I do know that for PvE pursuits lowsec is very unpopular and I tend to get a *lot* of hits on my multispecs when I go exploring in lowsec. ----- My in Eve Profile |

This is untrue. A dev confirmed in a post that when a site despawns, it respawns somewhere else. (You also don't have to wait for down time, either.) So there should always be the same number of Radar, Grav, and Mag and encounter sites out there. He didn't say, however, where it respawns or if or what kind of range limit it has to respawning.
RNGs are funny. It's completely possible to only get Unknown plexes, even if unlikely. |

Oh, and old skool 10/10 (or 6/10 or whatever) plexes are still possible to find, but they are hard to scan down even if it wasnt for anomalies cluttering up your multispec readings. They have also been nerfed somewhat in loot drops from what I hear.

Yeah that's the real big problem. Unknowns always showing up regardless if they are a CA or not. My corpmates did find a 10/10 complex lately, so they still exist. I just takes a bit of luck as well as probing down everything.
I really wish CCP would make the probing interface better. Like if you have a radar and a unknown (complex) in the system, when you are scanning using the quest probes I wish it would tell you what kind of deadspace signature you'd get off of a hit. That would clear up a lot of the trouble right now.

Actually, the real trouble right now is Cosmic Anomalies showing up on the Multi-Spec when Cosmic Anomaly was not chosen as a scan group. This should be changed with Trinity. Unknowns being picked up by your Quests, and you not knowing whether it's unknown or radar or whatever, is intended and part of exploration. Kind of the way I like it, too, as it adds to the "you never know what you're going to get" factor of exploration.

if you concentrate on one area, you will eventually run out of sites to find b/c someone else do not clear the other area of the region. I think the upcoming 3days timer despawn will help to despawn sites that no one try, so it can respawn some where else.

Unfortunately, someone still has to scan down and spawn those sites for them to despawn in three days.

If you want to take the time to distinguish between real and fake "exploration" sites, use your ship scanner at each planet. It's alot more efficient than running scans for an hour trying to determin it that way.
