No it won't, lag is caused by network traffic anyway not your processor.

Precisely. Until CCP makes another upgrade to the cluster hardware, there will be lag. And I doubt the new Trinity is written to take advantage of quad and I'm sure the current engine isn't.

Current TQ client does not support dual core processors yet, when trinity is released they said at fanfest that it will take advantage of dual core processors but no full support for quad cores as they are only fairly recent additions. ---------

You may want to consider going ahead and making the investment since Trinity will be making more (much more if I understood things at fanfest) use of the video card. I personally have the API Crossfire system with 512 for both cards and am looking forward to seeing how it will perform when Trinity comes out.

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 16/11/2007 15:20:06 EVE in its current form uses my Dual-core (AMD X2, but with its drivers installed, which help a lot) , usually primary CPU load hovers around 60% with the secondary around 40%, which is a lot more than just the stuff running in the background. But since EVE rarely caps either core out, i don't think it makes a massive difference, its just that you have a little more headroom for other processes. I don't fly in large fleets though, so i wouldn't know how big the benefit is for that.

Lag is the delay between user input and system response. The network aspect of that is latency, but that is only one part of the equasion.
The Eve client is heavily dependent of the data transfer rate of the system it runs on, meaning that *very* fast hard disks, or the use of a ram-drive, can increase performance by a substantial amount.
Historically Eve has also been very CPU hungry, but some of that load is meant to be offset to the GPU on your graphics card when Trinity is released.
Really, what I am saying, is that it might be best to see how Trinity runs before deciding on your upgrade.
More memory is always going to be good, and a dual core CPU will allow you to run background applications with less effect on Eve, and a fast graphics card should help in the future.

I run 2 pc's, both HP's. 1 amd 3800 single core and 2nd 3800x2.. The x2 tens to have better frame rates by 10-15% same ram etc. Who knows why.
TBH as cheap as the quad 6600 intel is, I'd buy one. Planning on a new rig biginning of the year myself.

At least with a new puter you can play some other cool games when Eve isn't available. Or when you're bored with Eve.

I went from a P4 3.2 Ghz like yours to a Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.5Ghz.
The difference is amazing for multiple accounts, and yes I'd absolutely recommend it.
Eve is not multi threaded as such but if you run multiple accounts it will handle 2 without even breaking into a sweat. Not tried it with more, but I'd get the impression it would run 3 or even 4 without slowing down to an unusable speed.
That's with 2Gb memory and a 320Mb Nvidia 8800GTS graphics card.

HD speed isn't an issue with Eve -- the game has little need to load assets off of the drive during play, and those assets are comparatively small.

I've got a dual and a quad, neither seems to affect the performance of Eve. I mean I can probably run like 6 clients, but they are all moving at the speed of die. That and I only have 2 accounts, so it would be hard to test.

Remember to get a decent mainboard to it can make a world of difference, I skimped on the mobo once and the system didn't run anywhere near as well as it should so I changed the board and it ran great.

I can assure you that a regularly defragged drive can boost performance in EVE.
also an i-RAM system boosts performance greatly aswell. ---

While I agree with you on CPU part - EVE really needs as fast as possible CPU. The HDD in fact isn't really a bottleneck. I have almost whole EVE relocated to RAM disk yet the performance didn't improve much. Well it did, but almost unnoticable.
to OP: Switching to core2duo (quad) will still improve the performance, but because it has 2 (4) cores, but mainly due to its architecture. But when the lag happens on server side it wont matter how fast your PC will be and how fast your internet connection is...

Why does Eve have to load anything from hdd during play ? The size of the eve client on hdd is ~1,42GB. I have got 2GB of RAM. The whole client could be loaded into RAM at startup.
But the whole client isn't being loaded into RAM. So to MAKE the Eve client load itself into RAM you can use a RAMDISC or one of those new SSD drives, which have a much better I/O-performance than a typical HDD.
Sadly this doesnt improve the performance of the client at all. In fleet battles or anything that includes huge number of players the performance remains at the same level, like using a typical HDD.
I was very disappointed when I watched the eve fanfest presentations and this trinity developer guy was asked about lag. He told that the main reason for the lag is that the client had to load data from HDD during play which simply isnt true. Thank you all for the replys. I think ill hold then until trinity is out and more people get into multiple cores, see if the bang for the buck is worth it or not.

My feeling is that the Trinity engine will use the CPU less and the GPU more.

If you do decide to invest in a multi-core system remember this important part: open task manager, right click on EveOnline and left click on set affinity. You will now see checkmarks next to all of the CPUs. If you have a Quad Core uncheck the first 3, if you have tricore the first two and if you have a dual core just the first one.

the coolest games don't require the coolest computers... TF2 fir example runs quite well on an average gaming computer, wheras Crysis runs like a pig even on a duo-core.
