Just killing time watching tv and doing some updates on the pc.
Decide to step outside for a smoke.
Dog runs over to the jeep and starts getting into a fight with something.
Grab a high powered spotlight to see what he's getting into and I catch a glimpse of a skunk.
I call the dog back into the house but it's too late and he's sprayed. In fact I don't think the skunk ever missed.
Whole ******* house stinks.
I couldn't find any pet shampoo so I used some regular stuff and it kinda smells like he's a little cleaner (hard to tell cause the house ******* stinks).
I've checked the dog over and it doesn't look like he was physically attacked. Now he's wet and thinking he's in trouble cause I won't let him on the bed.
In all my experience with skunks I have never had one spray me or any of my animals (every skunk I come across ends up dead). Anyone got any good suggestions for getting the stink out?

Edited by: War Keynvor on 18/11/2007 09:21:24 Cleansing Fire. lots of it, your house will no longer smell of skunk after about an hour, and if it does that'll be the least of your problems anyway.
However if you don't have any matches handy I typed skunk spray into google and the remedies it came up with all seem to be identical:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (fresh bottle) 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) 1-2 teaspoons liquid dish soap.
From Wikipedia:
"The thiols, which are responsible for the odor, are not water soluble, even with soap, but the baking soda catalyzes the oxidative ability of the peroxide, which oxidizes the thiols into highly water-soluble sulfonates. In an episode of the television program MythBusters, the hydrogen peroxide mix was found to be the most effective smell removal agent."

Alright, second bath in and he's smelling a little better. Still hard to tell with the smell being in the house. I've used like a half a bottle of odor nuetralizer so far.
I swear if that damn skunk is anywhere nearby when I wake up it's going to meet the wrong end of a .22.
Thanx for the info.

While of course I've smelled skunk, I've never had a dog get into one, only porcupines.
I wonder which is worse.
Gross.

I have had friends with animals who have tangled with both (well, not the same dog).
Porcupine is worse for the dog. Skunk is just annoying as hell to everyone. Porcupine is a trip to the vet for the dog. My friend's dog actually died from its second porcupine encounter (not immediately but from infection, died in surgery at the vet). That may be a bit extreme and not common but I have never heard of anything dying from a skunk.
The skunk smell will stay with you a long time. Restrict the dog to one room, preferably an easily cleaned room, till you can clean it thoroughly. Wash as described with the Hydrogen Peroxide solution mentioned above. Wash again. Maybe get the dog a haircut.
I have never seen anything be 100% effective but that should go a long way. A different friend's dog was dumb as bricks and tangled with a skunk at least 4 times I recall in its life...sprayed every time. More than a month later if the dog got wet you could still smell the skunk smell a bit. That **** is nasty.

Yeah I've already checked him for wounds and didn't find anything nor have I seen him trying to clean any wound himself. I don't think he ever got close enough to the little bastard.
Realized this morning that I left the side door to the garage open so I sent the dog in there with me in tow with a .22 to see if the animal took shelter since it was raining last night but the dog didn't track anything. Looks like it went behind the house and down the hill.
Locking him in one room would have been pointless at this point. He sticks by my side at all times which included last night when I hit up every room trying to find dog shampoo so the whole house smelled. Either I've gotten used to it or it's died down since then. Only place I can still smell it strong is right at the front door.
Every time I've ever encountered a skunk it's always been near water like a river. In the 2 years I've lived up here I have never seen one.
About 10 years ago I was camping with some friends down in Swan Falls and we had a family of 7 skunks run through our camp. Shot 3 of them and in the morning one of my friends thought it'd be great to throw one in the campfire. Actually smelled like a great barbeque for about 5 minutes then just smelled like burned skunk.
I hate these little punks.
