The sell order defaults to 1 day.
I have gotten into a ritualistic habbit of changing this to 3 months for every sell order, and it's a pain in the butt when you forget to do it and it goes in as 1 day.
I don't see any noticable benefit of putting it in for anything less than 3 months - the taxes and costs don't change.
Am I missing something - is there a benefit to the shorter sell durations (keeping in mind that you can cancel your order at any time any way)?

There is no reason to put it at anything under 3 months.
The only argument you'll hear is from people who have a hard time figuring out which order is theirs so they use it as a marker. But honestly there are a few other ways to mark orders which is far more effective and less detrimental.
The system should either change the default to 3 months or it should charge more isk for longer durations. It should also not re-start the timer every time you modify an order.

Thanks for that - I looked long and hard at it and couldn't see any practical reason for it being this way. I guess it's just another "feature" :)
Agree - they should change the default to 3 months.

CCP had a long history of doing things in their own way.
Here are a few more: -Loan contracts structured around property for ISK and a rate of return, rather than ISK for property and a rate of return.
-Defaults on pop up warning messages being "yes".
-Publicly stating that lag trade exploits are only illegal if you do it more than once.
-Using some magical coloring system for denoting whether a number is positive or negative instead of the good ole minus symbol or the prefered accounting method of using brackets.
-Ever tried to narrow a search for systems you have 50m or more minerals at? You can't, it's limited to 10m max search criteria. Like some goob at CCP said once that "nobody will ever have more that 10m of anything so why allow them to search more. Now write more code and limit that search feature."
-He's my favourite. When you have a huge list of crap all over the universe, CCP makes it imnpossible to export it, filter it further, or work with it in any way or fashion at all. Like they think nobody would like to have that feature? It makes me wonder... do they even play the very game they dish out?
-In ability to see in remote containers. Pffft... everyone has to contract containers to someone else to see what's in it. WHY???
-No commas when entering numbers. You have to figure out the differenc between 10000000, 1000000000, 100000000 and 100000000 visually, or you have to press tab and double check. This as well all know adds an extra step which makes some posters pee their pantaloons.
-You can send a eve-mail message to anyone, anywhere at anytime. You can also see remote contracts in any region anywhere at anytime. But you can't bid on them. No wonder everyone goes to Jita for those rare things huh?
I am sure there are more.

I like the restart, it lets me see how often the other guys are updating their orders.

I wish there was some way to change the default range and time of sell order, changing it to region/3 months for every order is a pain in the butt.

I can't believe you forgot to mention the absurdity of the evemail system. No other email system on the planet is so limited in how you sort/view mail... why does THIS system seem like a good idea?

*cough*my sig*cough*
Frankly, while some people have claimed to have gotten a 'quick sale' from a short-term order, I believe that evidence to be purely circumstantial.
I see *absolutely* no reason to have anything less than a 3 month order unless there was a loss mechanism when modifying an order (as mentioned in the tax reapplication thread).
*IF* there was a reapplication of fees (or even if the timer didn't renew each modification), long-term sell orders would provide longer market visibility and would be designed for handling larger volumes, whilst short-term orders would only be market visible for a short time (increasing the risk of it timing out and being forced to pay full broker tax on a relist), but would be less likely to be undercut by competitors (i've got object A on sale for the next 2 months, someone undercuts with a 1 week sell order, why would i take a fee and undercut when it'll be gone in a week and I'll be cheapest again?)

The ingame font is horrible.
You used to be able to change it to other fonts by replacing a file in the game directory. CCP deemed this a bannable exploit and released a hotfix, making it impossible.
No joke.

Well, if you're going to vary the broker fee depending on the order duration, then when you modify the order you could be offered the option of modifying the duration as well as the price specifically. You could then renew the order up to the three-month limit (and do so without having to change the price), but you would have to pay the broker fee related to the difference between your selected new duration and the time remaining on the current order. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

I would rather see a skill that determines how long your orders can be placed on the market, at least for the integrity of dedicated trader profession.

Is integrity really the word you wanted there? If so you'll have to explain that a bit more.
