I'm a can-flipping novice and have a few questions about how it works, specifically about when drones will aggro...
So a miner is sitting in a belt, with attack drones orbiting around for spawns.
1) Does taking something from a non-secure can and taking something from a wreck assigned to them have the same effect? I understand it gives them kill rights in both instances, but i tried it earlier and the drones didnt attack, maybe the person was aware and spamming return and orbit commands?
2) do i need to have my potential kill targeted, so that they have me targeted, in order for the drones to attack? And am i correct in assuming they auto attack a blinky red once i steal something from them.

also, are high sec miners really this ********?
in the past hour or so (excluding server downtime) i have talked 3 high sec mining hulks into attacking me with their drones after i stole something from them (but their drones didnt auto attack). just taunting and making myself seem like a noob whos ship would be easily destroyed.
3 hulks and a retriever...loads of t2 strip mining things, and one even had a dominiation shield booster..../shrug

Drone's don't auto-agress someone who is just flagged to them, they will attack only if the miner takes damage from you (which would result in concord showing up if you have no agression rights). The reason the drones have been attacking you is because the miner has "Right click - Engage target" thinking they could have killed you.

so then what is the strategy behind "can flipping"? i keep hearing people explain it as a way to take out macrominers and/or miners who just arent paying attention in high sec. Is there a way to have them aggress you without choosing?

Because sometimes these miners take the ore back out of the can without noticing its not thier can anymore. This means you now get killrights on them.

ok so the idea is to find a miner silly enough to be using unsecure containers by his ship. Take something out of the container into my cargo, so that i get flagged, and then wait for the miner to loot that can and since the can now belongs to me it will give me kill rights on him?
are there any other ways to pick off high sec miners? i have a strong distaste for them

sit next to his can, drop your own can (preferably named the same thing), move everything from his can into yours. if he's stupid and you're in a crap ship, he might attack you and give you 15 minutes to return fire. if he doesn't attack you, then you wait and hope he's stupid enough to take the stuff out of your can and get flagged.
most of the time they won't do either of these things and will just cry in local.

Isn't can flipping like 1 step up from having sex with children? Why don't you strap on a pair and go yarring instead of doing this kiddie crap?

Miners in general tend to be pretty hard targets unless they're total noobs. Belt miners will tend to have a hauler right sitting next to them or are just baiting you into attacking them (take their can, you flash red to them, if they engage and you return fire you flash red to their whole gang who are aligned nearby. A pvp fitted hulk is surprisingly capable in the hands of a skilled pilot).
Once someone's can gets stolen the first time they generally wise up and move into misson spaces where they know it's not worth the effort for you to find them (or just quit mining and start running endless missions). ----- My in Eve Profile |

Usually they'll have their haulers fitted out nicely... was lucky enough to have a guy's hauler flip "my" can and he dropped 3x Expanded Cargohold IIs
When you still in your infancy of piracy that's a lot

Excellent prejudice there! Yes, can flipping is in the same bracket as paedophilia, thank you for your shrewd observation.

Do you even know what you're asking here?
I mean yes, this is EVE Online, where you are forced into PvP not only by other players, but by the game client!

heh well thanks for the replys everyone...
Im waiting on my corp to change homes so i had some time today to try a new form of yarrring that i had never done before (high sec miner farming). In all of my kills, only once did i get them blinky by means of can flipping. The rest were me simply pretending to be a noob and getting them all huffy puffy into attacking me with their drones.
My Results: 3 Hulks destroyed. 2 Retrievers destroyed. 1 Covetor Destroyed. About 55mil worth of t2 strip miners, t2 cargo holds, t2 scooped drones, and a faction mod, by looting their ship wrecks.
And at the end of the day...i found a rokh mining, and got him blinky but wasnt paying attention and he got away and i thought i missed my chance. But soon after he came back in a Raven and tried to take me out in my myrm. The result was about 30min of me holding him in 1/2 hull. 67mil in ransom was paid to me to let him go...but not after the following convo happened:
[19:27:01] Bakalla Cera > say you are sorry
[19:27:26] xxxxxxxx > sorry Bakalla!
[19:28:06] Bakalla Cera > say "i am sorry bakalla for thinking i could defeat you...i give up, you are the superior fighter"....then i will let your raven go
[19:27:26] xxxxxxxx > I am not got the english but i am sorry bakalla for this i am idiot
[19:28:06] Bakalla Cera > ok <3
So 100mil+ in profit, and probably 500mil+ in dmg dealt out
And to the guy who asked why dont i go and pvp with real opponents or whatever...cry me a river? gotta love when people complain about killing carebears, and they use one of those lines that makes an assumption that you dont pvp elsewhere

Lol. Methinks you ask a lot :)
Surprised you're still finding folks mining into cans, tbh. The ones around me all mine into secure cans or straight into mining barges/industrials.
Maybe I'm just in the wrong place?

how can anyone be stupid enough to attack somone unlawfuly? it tells you plain as day you will get tagged as a criminal from concord. also the new can appears yellow, they have to re-select it and open it, and it gives them a warning about stealing from cans, and there is a battleship right next to them who owns that can. they would have to be insanely ******** to fall for that, but apparently many people have.
is there something i'm missing like a loophole in the agro code, or drones agroing concord even if you have kill rights?
there's a ******** macro miner born every minute. ---

I used to do this. I used a shuttle to get them to attack me, then dock and get a thorax. I got quite a few t2 strip miners from this when they were 20m each.
