Find an area of space that is safe for all but away from rats and such (dead space) setup tons of anchored cans and I mean tons, in a grid. Put some fun stuff in them but a password or some such in each. Need a way to prevent a spammer. Some cans have like cheap stuff in them, others something very nice. Some can even have something that would award a really nice item (Battleship ect). Entry fee is like 10m-50m isk for the chance to pick 1-3 canisters. Person goes into the grid and picks one and gets to keep whats inside.
Any thoughts?

Not a bad idea, until someone figures to bring a cargoscanner with them.

use ticket numbers in the cans(named bookmarks?), and have them collect the ticket numbers with a shuttle?

If you want real randomness , you should stuff those bookmarks into shuttles. Just kill a hauler full of shuttles , board each shuttle and drop one bookmark in their cargo , then use nanoships to send them flying around. Once there is a reasonable distance between them , gangwarp people to the deadspace area. Bookmarks directly lead to the shiny stuff (secure cans at safespots , they cannot be probed) which ensures the competition is fair.
If you really want to deter possible cheating , bring in some cloaked recons and snipers. It can take place in highsec if the guards are in your corp - as long as the contestants are in a separate gang (gangwarp them with your alt or something) since they will be boarding your ships , and therefore be flagged to your corp.
There. I think it's foolproof.
However , for real fun and challenge you should make it happen in lowsec (though securing it from meddling pirates is a challenge in itself) as participants are allowed to shoot each other , and try to keep boarding shuttles or other frigates left behind...
