I've personally described Eve Online as an RTS where each player is a single unit or pawn in the game instead of the leader/demigod controlling an entire nation/civilization. Thinking of how similar Eve is to an RTS, I've wondered... what would it be like for it to actually be an RTS: what if all the players were the leader and/or demigod controlling an entire alliance in the same way a player controls a civilization in games like Age of Empires, Starcraft, etc.
Would you play the Eve Online RTS? ---

As an RTS, hell no. As a MOO/Galciv/etc style game, sure.

I'd probably not pay a monthly fee for it.
Besides that I'm happy that there are at least some devs, who seem to share my view that they want to strengthen the immersion factor of actually feeling like being a pilot and having a movie like experience. That's at least what I've heared a few times in relation to with the ambulation project and exactly that feeling of being a pilot in something like an interactive science fiction movie with a plot that writes itself is the reason, why I came to EVE some years ago.
But since you mentioned EVE being an rts: No, I'm not really interested in playing one of a few thousand little zergs or berserkers (Starcraft-Reference) in this game, who just follows orders. Then I'd really prefer to play a RTS over EVE, where I can actually make decisions.

To increase immersion I say when you are around blue pilots on a grid, that background radio chatter should be heard slightly. Kind of like the radio chatter in the Evolution trailer. Sounded so f*cking badass. --

You should check out the EVE mod for Homeworlds its pretty good. As a RTS junkie I would love a custom EVE RTS but it would all depend on its conception and the way the game was setup.

Well, it does seem like most players in Eve Online are just one unit in an RTS-style game. But I suppose what I'm thinking of is sort of how the ships parallel with unit types in RTS games.
In most RTS games you have about three to five different resource-gathering civilian unit types. In Eve Online, I translate those units into mining barges and exhumers.
In some RTS games you also have a separate class of transportation or resource-hauling: industrials, transports and freighters in Eve Online might parallel with those.
In all RTS games you then have the actual combat units, which are significantly more numerous and varied than the resource-gathers and transports. Sometimes they are classified as fast or slow, light or heavy, ranged or melee, siege or support, etc. Seems like Eve's PvP ships are similar: you have your light ships and your heavy ships, your fast ships and slow ships, your long range ships and close range ships, your siege-like capitals and support ships.
And just as in an RTS, you need a balance of a bunch to really get far. A single unit in an RTS isn't worth too much, and it seems like it is much the same in Eve. Making a fleet in Eve is like making your army in an RTS... or something like that.
I hope that makes sense. ---

As one of the pilots in my corp said a few days ago, "EVE has sound?".
Well, it does. But most people turn it off as soon as they get on vent/teamspeak ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

Edited by: Paulo Damarr on 20/11/2007 03:21:18 Pretty easy to classify the ships.
Frigates = entry tier units for holding ground initially, fairly weak but dangerous in numbers
Mining Barges = resource gathers weak defenses and low survibility but the key to success
cruisers = heavier mid game units with greater fire power
Battleships = end tier units, massive firepower and defenses with restricted mobility
Cov Ops = scouts, weak but gathers intelligence
Interceptors = Skirmishers that provide disruption to enemy units and assist larger units to destroy enemies
Capitol ships = special units that are very powerful but can only be used in limited numbers
And the list goes on but you get the idea

Nah, most people turn off sound when their armor reppers CTD for them. Someone reminded me that Eve has sound a few weeks ago when I bought an Exequeror.
Anyway, I'd really like a Galciv/MOO/Space Empires knock off of Eve. I've been considering adapting my damage simulation engine to exactly such a thing.

if you want RTS-style, xwing-style gameplay in a sci-fi setting check out 'allegiance'. its now free, but when it was first released it was the best online space game out there...100player fleet battles with no lag was awesome.

GalCiv and Moo are ok, but it would be neat to have a more RTS like combat system rather than the silly ones in GC and Moo.

I was one of the First Ones in the Homeworld modding community and all I can say is that when these guys release the Eve HW2 mod all your RTS Eve fantasys will come to an unbearibly intense orgasmic fruition.. They are that good at what they do..

You guys really feel like some RTS NPC? I don't, even when being a resource gathering civilian, as it were. If Eve ever does have a more traditional RTS component, it will be our characters, the individual pilots, that are the kings and leaders of nameless masses living below. That was the indication from fan fest anyway with the keyword "millions" presented as the proposed scale of what it will be like. So Eve will be this sort of hybrid. The in-space third-person-isometric we have today, and the "god game" RTS like game play on planets. -AS

LoL. If you want to play EvE the RTS just become the leader of a huge super Alliance. Pretty much the same thing, gather resources, build units, train people to use them, have battles. Repeat ad nausium. +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!

Personally, I don't like sci-fit RTS games. In RTS games where there's a "future" or even "modern" age, I usually don't play them at those ages, or at all for that matter. However, Eve Online specifically is rather fun. I enjoy playing this game. But what I'm thinking is, instead of controlling a single ship... you control a fleet... would that be interesting? ---

Umm, as a rather frequent FC, all I have to say is that its downright painful.

Well, being an FC and being an RTS player is different. As an FC, you are leading people, which means a lot of responsibility and a lot of human error. As an RTS player, there's less responsibility, and error isn't as important. Basically, less stress, but still exciting in its own way. ---

Correct me if im wrong but isnt there an eve-online mod for "homeworld 2". If not i think its coming out soon. And homeworld 2 is about as close to eve as an rts as you can get.

Eve is an RTS in my eyes.
Frigate Tackler = Zergling Cruiser = Hydralisk BS = Hunter-Killer FC = Overlord Dread = Terran Siege Tank Cov Ops = Terran Cov Ops Industrialist = Terran Vehicle Factory Miner = Resource Gatherer
Doesn't mean each single unit doesn't have its own character.
Remember the two rednecks running over the Zergling in the cut scene from Star Craft?
"You mashed some poor feller's dog, Sarge" "It's a Zergling, Lester, smaller type of Zerg, but they wouldn't be out here unless..."
Basically Eve is a RTS where each unit has its own unique personality and character.
