Just noticed this after browsing the forums here. I get that you're all pirating and all. Power to you, you keep the game interesting with fun risks. Hell, it even makes mining interesting.
What I pretty much read all the time on the forums though is how YOU are the ones getting smacktalked, while when I find pirates ingame, they smacktalk me :(. Am I just having bad luck finding pirates that are idiots or do the idiots just not post here :p The pirates I have found ingame so far more make me want to point and laugh then run for the hills.

Well, you find scumbags anywhere you go. There are lots of pirate corps that enforce a smack free local from its members because when you blow someone up, steal or ransom someone you've already inflicted enough pain, no need to be an ******* about it and rub it in.
It's nothing new that pirates are beeing smacked at more then, for example mission runners. Thats because you interact with your targets in a way they dont like. And since many feel they are justified the smacking because you are no good loser pirate and deserves to burn in hell anyway there isnt much holding them back.

I know a few pirate's and they are really great peeps. Im not saying they all are, but from what I have seen they are usually the victim of smack talk, from killing peoples ships and such.
That usually aggros them into smack talking back, and usually a good podding ensues, ive been on the rdcieving end of pirate ganks, and tbh Ive had good convo's with them and made some good flying buddies too.

There is a difference between funny stuff said in local, and real smack...people often class anything beyond 'gf' as smack...I appreciate good humour from people even at my own expense...people get ****ed at the smack that's just inane. for example, there are two of you, 15 hostiles, and they call you a coward...ummmmm...says more about the smacker than anyone else...
Some people who have turned out to be decent eve-buddies started out as people who I have shared funny conversations with in local which many would deem smack...
I see nothing wrong with quick wit...its the just plain stupid crap, where people talk about how "l33t" they are, and how much you got "p0wned" that is out of place. "Yes, I got p0wned for docking to your 30 man gang, while I was solo in my Crow...yes I must really suck for not wanting to die... "
Keep it funny...its a game afterall!!

Different kinds of smack for different situations:
Comedy Smack - "Phear my ibis of d00m!" Psychological Smack - "Cmon man, undock and let's settle this like men" Epeen Enhancing Smack - "Pwnt!" OMG I just got past a 20 man gatecamp smack - "Hahah nice gatecamp, noob much?"

Whenever I attack someone, pop their ship, or get popped by someone (That being the majority of occurrences) I make it a point to be polite and to not smacktalk because as someone said, you've already caused enough harm and there is no need to rub it in any further. Now when it's me who's been victimized, I tend to ask for advice on how to avoid that situation and believe me, it goes a long way towards how that person treats you in the future. So the moral of this particular story is that if you ever happen to be scrambled or otherwise incapacitated and find yourself chatting it up with your attacker, go out of your way to be polite (unless they are being asshats) as that will more than likely reduce your ransom, plus this is just a game, no need to get all bent outta shape.

Some corps enforce local silence , some others encourage smacktalk.
I like chatting in local , and it doesn't have to be neutral talk. If there is an opportunity to insert witty sarcasm at no cost to myself , I take it. I can't stomach raw insults however , they don't belong to the game. Of course , they don't have much of an impact when they come from victims
