Sounds like governments, businesses, and consumers need to foot the bill for that ú66billion needed to expand the infrastructure.
the UK is always tight-fisted when it comes to everything, i read somewhere that in china if you purchase a 10mbps internet connection, then you actually get just that, a download speed of 10mbps. im in uk, ive got an 8mb connection, and if im downloading a large file i get about 1-2mbps.
everyone cries out for cheap broadband, and we get it, the cost being slower connection rates.
I know this is a strange comparison, but the agricultral industry has similar problems, these are, everyone wants cheap meat/chicken..
The farmers have to use every trick in the book to get us our "cheap meat" and the result is, a lower quality product.
anyway enough of my mumblings :)

Thing is, most (I think) internet connections are mesured in bits, not bytes. That's why for example if you get a 10mbps internet connection you only get 1,25mBps (note the upper case b) download speed. I'm not sure but I think I'm right.

So the internet's gonna end in 2010 and the world is going to end in 2012.
I better start planning what to do for those 2 years....I've got it, if I start downloading the whole internet now I should be done by 2010 and I can then spend the next 2 years watching/reading everything.
Phew that was a close one, I was scared I might have to go outside. =============================================

You are correct.

I don't know about other countries but frankly, I think the BBC should pay to upgrade all the broadband lines in the UK. Broadband is the new big form of media. Through it we can get music, television, films, games, etc. Thus I feel that this is their responsibility.

So whats everyone got plans for in the 2 years between the end of the internet and the end of the world?
And most importantly, how many people can we expect to see still sitting at their desk double clicking their mmo icon in hopes that 'this time' it will work.

Well when the net goes I will know I have got nothing left to lose, therefore I shall spend the next two years fulfilling my dream to be a revolutionary and work my way up to post-apocalyptic warlord.

try and picture it like an 4 lane motorway, we get lots of traffic , idealy it needs to be upgraded to an 8 lane motorway, however this kind of work takes ages to do and frankly it should have been done 5 years ago.
Its as if noones got any foresight or logic to see what will happen if something is neglected, British Telecom will need to lead the way, after all thats who icp's and consumers ultimatley buy internet from.

If you look at modern networking techniques, the Internet shouldn't work. Its just mods built upon mods upon mods etc.
What really needs to happen, is for the internet to be stripped completely out, rewrite protocols, re-lay ocean and continental cables. The internet is badly 'future-proofed' and nobody is willing to fork out to save it.
