Hey there folks - first time posting here, and I'm a relatively new player. I am currently training up to Industry V to get myself a mining barge - probably the second one in the set of three, because the third is just so damn far away and too expensive for me right now. I'd like to specialize in mining Veldspar because I don't have all that much time to spend looking at local and hunting around for awesome minerals - any suggestions on what to fit the ship with? I'm having trouble finding out what strip miners do, but thought I might fit some of those. I could also head for ice, if it's profitable. Cheers in advance.

The Retriever has a drone bay of 25 cubic meters, so you can fit light drones. You can use miners in 0.9 or 1.0 space, get some hobgoblins if you want to go to 0.6-0.8 space to fight off the 'rats. In 0.5 space staving off 'rats would require medium drones, which you don't have enough room for. Check out the Pyroxeres or Scordite market in your area, refer to the Ultimate Miner's Guide (there's a sticky somewhere on this site) for yield and composition information. There is also some good stuff on the Retriever as a mining ship. As I'm training up for a Covetor I realize that a Retriever would be a good interim ship due to training time.

Cheers to you - thanks very much!! I'm also training up to the top ship there, but it'll take nine tenths of forever, so in the meantime, this ship is it. Thanks again!

To continue with your question, search this site for Retriever setups, not much to them really, just two strip miners, and a few other modules. Beginning mining is a grind, but whatever ship you're now mining in its probably better to sell the ore than refine it. Some ore is more valuable than others, but the trick is the amount you get per cubic meter. The Miner's Guide has info on that too. At the beginning I found ratting and selling loot was more ISK-effective than mining, but as you get bigger ships mining is a good alternative and less stressful. A lot of options for training up to Miner II's, as will increase your yield (and spend less time in the fields). Training drone skills will enable you to get mining drones and scout drones you'll need to protect yourself with in 0.5 to 0.8 space. It's always a trade-off when you interrupt skill training to get some intermediate skill you need to be able to mine more effectively. Good luck! YOU'VE NEVER ROCKED 'TIL YOU'VE UNDOCKED. |

ú10 says you'll get bored of mining before you have the skills to fly a coveter or hulk. Train to fly a BS and fit mining lasers to it, then you wont have wasted all that time if you decide you want to go npcing or maybe pvping instead.

I'll agree that mining can be boring as heck, and training up to BS with mining and PvE and PvP options makes a lot of sense. This is also covered in the Ultimate Miner's Guide. I've split my training into two characters, one production/mining the other missions/ratting etc. Seems to take forever to advance either one, but I'll be playing EVE until my eyeballs fall out, which may be sooner than later seeing how they hurt right now. Its kind of nice to just mine some ore, buy a blueprint, and make the ship your other character has got to have. YOU'VE NEVER ROCKED 'TIL YOU'VE UNDOCKED. |

Edited by: Acoco Osiris on 20/11/2007 22:55:26 I have no problem mining in 0.5 with 5 light drones.
Of course, I do have Drone Interfacing V...
