This is a critical evaluation of myself engaging a very fast ship - I've been working on setting up ships to deal with this tactic - and I thought I'd share with the community some thoughts...
First off - yes I lost - but my 2 man gang's ships (w/out mods) are worth 1/10th the price tag of a vagabond - so no surprises here - just my attempt for dealing with fast ships (as a Caldari player flying small ships - no huggins or rapiers or battleship neuts).
I set up one of my favorite small ships the Harpy - as a sniper, and went out with a corp mate in a Blackbird to go test our luck vs a Vagabond pilot we saw on scanner.
Setup
4x 150 mm railgun II 24-km warp disrupter, tracking disrupter, passive EM, small shield extender Tracking Enhancer II, CPU
ROF and damage rigs (yeah I know bad idea on cost - but I love making and using rigs).
Right off the bat the vagabond comes screaming in with tech 2 drones (hobgoblin II's). My tank wasn't particularly great (although I didn't mind the native 80% thermal resist). I was a bit excited with firing at the vagabond - where I made 2 CRUCIAL mistakes.
- Never turned on my tracking disrupter - DOH!!! I didn't need it when he had his MWD on - he couldn't track me - but when he slowed down, i started to get burnt bad - this might have helped - A LOT...
- Should have killed the drones instead of attacking the vagabond - they were doing most of the damage to me till the Vagabond slowed down. I assumed my thermal resist was enough - it wasn't, if I had popped them - I would have lasted much longer.
My corp mate in his blackbird I think may have gotten a successful jam - not fast enough to save my butt - but it was enough for him to be able to bail (even after some resourceful bumping on the Vagabond pilot's part - hahaha).
After the 'gf' in local - struck up a convo asked about the logs to see how often I was hitting him - to our surprise he said all shots hit their mark on the Vagabond. Even at the Vagabond's top speed - my guns hit him.
I went in not expecting a win - the guy could have easily zipped away if things went south for him - plus like I said an AF will have a lot of trouble taking on a HAC - even with a 3-month old corp mate with cruiser support. I wasn't expecting a 7 mil harpy and 4 mil Blackbird to kill a 90 mil Vagabond.
However - had we had a couple more friends in destroyers or sniping harpies join in - and I had avoided my stupid stupid mistakes - I know we could have driven off the Vagabond - which to me would be a win.
Just wanted to share some experience dealing with fast ships - small guns on a Harpy or a Cormorant can track a very fast ship - and in enough numbers spaced out - drive off a wise vagabond pilot.
Not looking for flames just sharing a story - I learned a lot from it. 9000 shields might be a bit too much to chew off in a 100 DPS sniping Hapry (antimatter in rails fired to 20 km optimal). I am convinced though it would take on an interceptor well - or a group of Harpies could take on a Vagabond on an equal isk to isk basis. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Unless you know you can dictate range (which in this kind of scenario you definitely can't), try a blaster harpy over a sniper fit. If you'd tried killing light drones with rails you might change your mind about their tracking; and you could actually dent the Vaga's tank with a blaster fit.

Is not dificult to fight against nano ships (vagabonds, ishtars, etc...) the only annoying part is that YOU will not win, you can survive, and is not dificult, but you will not win unless the nano pilot screwes big time. If you start to win the fight he will just run away and thats the annoying part, he will put the mwd's on and you will see the ships walking away at +5000 m/s with your drones unable to catch him, your missiles unable to catch him, your turrets unable to do any damage within seconds...
When the nano pilot engages he is not risking. He will try is luck, if the other pilot setup/ ship is unable to defend againts him he will win, if the the ship/setup is enough to give him a slight hint of danger to him, he will walk away...

That is false. Or do roughly 50% of the vagabonds press the self destruct button?

Or more likely, they are (a) **** pilots, or (b) don't really care about losing their ship for a possible kill. Vaga's are a lot cheaper now then they used to be, and losing one really ain't that big of a deal for most people with a decent isk base, or way of making isk behind them.

It's still cheaper to lose a couple battleships than a vagabond though.

I'm not too sure about that though.
In a harpy the blaster's range is just not good enough to even hit the vaga at all. They would be nice for popping drones and the tracking would be superb though....hmmmm.....blasters are better....
Why not use 2 range extension rigs, blasters, a tracking computer instead of disruptor, and drop the tracking enhancer low for a damage mod??
You will have ok range, maybe even the same as a rail with low range ammo, your tracking will be WAY better and you will do more damage.
The only problem is losing that tracking disruptor is just painful isn't it?
