Greetings, all. In a fit of extreme boredom I ground my science/production alt to the point where she can use level 2 R&D agents.
To make a long story short, I had no idea what I was doing, but after accessing the agents I was struck by a couple things.
The first thing that struck me was that of the two agents I can use, neither ever have any missions. Asking for work just results in a "come back tomorrow, kid."
The second thing that occurred to me about the "research" portion of these agents was: why am I bothering?
I mean, okay, great, I'm accumulating research points... however since the lottery is gone (thank the gods) what the hell is the purpose of doing "research" with these agents?

to purchase data cores so you can run invention.

Or to make 'free' isk! I can't be bothered with invention atm but still have 3 lvl3 R&D agents because I can sell the datacores. It makes me over 100M per month for doing sod all!
Some datacores are worth more than others tho so it's worth picking the right agents :)

I must say I am having issues with RD agents as well. I have been looking for some level 2/3 Kalaakiota agents, but every single research slot seems to be taken, and all of the agents say come back tomorrow (like the OP)
So I guess im asking where the hell do you find RD agents that want to work with me?!

Research agents only offer you missions if you are using them for research.
For which you need to have Science V and the relevant research skill (eg mechanical engineering, which is producing the most valuable datacores much of the time).
If you show info on a research agent, they list the fields they can do research in; get the skill for that field, go to the agent, and ask them to head up a research project for you.
Then you get RP's which can be traded in for datacores. Doing missions (one per day) for the agent gets you double RP's.

Edited by: Kaz Razul on 23/11/2007 01:04:15 I appreciate your response, however I dont feel like you addressed my question. I have the appropriate skills trained, and i have visited quite a few agents. Every one that I went to, would not "head up" my research. They all say come back tomorrow. I also have the proper standings to be able to get most of the RD agents' help, (in the kaalakiota corp) but they want no part of me!
Is there something I am missing about finding an RD agent that has availability?
PS the char that has the skills/standing is not this one :)

If the agent is telling you to come back later (or something like that), you are eighter missing the skills or the standing.
You need direct standing with the corp or the agent. NOT with the Faction.

Plus, you'll need Research Project Managment in order to use more than a single agent at a time.
Check out the required standings in the Agent's info for what you might be missing. Your standings with the corp are a MUST-HAVE. _______________________________

In addition to Science 5 and <Insert Technical Skill Here> trained a couple of levels, each field also requires one of these three trained to level 5: Engineering, Mechanic, Electronics. Granted, most people looking to do research will already have all 3 maxxed out, but it's another pre-req that you need to have.

What's the point of R&D agents????
I spent 40m ISK on Research Project Management and another 30m ISK on research skills.
I'm now earning 30-40m per week for doing basically nothing. I jump in a covert ops and fly to each agent every now and then, pick up my datacores and move them to a location where they can be sold for good prices. I've only trained 2 levels of research project management and therefore have access to 3 R&D agents at any given time (currently 2 level 4 and 1 Level 3 is giving the best return). I've got plans to train a couple more levels when I can be bothered.
This week's run (about 10 days since the last one) netted me just under 50m ISK.
Cheers Falka

The possibilities are 2:
1) you have no R&D agents "slots" free. You can have only 1 agent plus 1 agent for each Research Project Management skill level.
2) you standing is lacking in some of the required values. As EVE round up when displaing the standing value but keep the true, unrounded value for agent availability it can be a imperceptible difference. Note that you can't use the faction standing in alternative to your corporation standing to access a R&D agent. The corporation is a must.

This one got me too when I first started.
You usually get the come back tomorrow if you try to get a mission, but don't have a research project with that agent. You get a "you don't have the necessary skills" if you ask them to head up research and you don't have the right skills.
I think what you are missing is the appropriate science skill for that agent. e.g if the agent offers mechanical engineering, electronic engineering and plasma physics, then you need at least one level of one of these skills. The agent will then offer you that particular type of research. If you have two or more of the appropriate science skills, then you get a choice as to which one you want to research (and what sort of datacores you get). Once you have a research project running, you can get a mission, but only one per day. If you try for a second mission in the same day, you get a "I don't have anything right now - please come back tomorrow"
Hope this helps.
Cheers Falka
