Nope, not a "why does DT last an hour" whine thread :) I'm just curious about what actually happens during DT on the server side (aside from the change window opening).

Server hamsters get to rest, socialise, and generally cool down before it's time for their daily shot of steriods.
Then it's back on the wheel.

EVE turns into Hello Kitty Online for an hour, so all the people told to go there can get a bit of game time on their accounts while regular EVE players have no access.

Why would anyone yell 'EMPTY, YOU AMPERSAND-HASH-DOLLAR-PERCENT-ING C-PERCENT-THINGY-AND-K OF A SYSTEM'?
Seems like an odd thing to say to me.

They also break out the girl hamsters and a fresh bottle of liquer. Thus the lag after downtime sometimes.

Odd yes. Stranger still when the collective concious of Jita yells "No." and runs him over with a freighter.

At the risk of being serious for a minute, and drawing upon my memory of the last time this was asked:
DT is generally used for maintenance operations that would either be difficult to run while the server is live, or which would cause potentially game-breaking oddities if done while the server is live.
An example of the first would be the deleting of records of stuff in the "junkyards". For performance reasons when stuff is destroyed/trashed etc the DB entry for it is not deleted immediately. Instead it's transferred to be located in a "junkyard" (the transfer will be a change of one DB field and is a much faster DB operation than a delete of the entire record). This might also make the GM's life a bit easier, as they can find the original item in the junkyard. Things can't be left to sit in the junkyard indefinitely though, as the ItemID's need to be freed up to be used again (there were a couple of instances where the server crashed after running out of ItemID's).
While this could be set up as a background process, it would have to be slower as it would be constantly backing off to allow the more critical "live" traffic priority if it was not to impact server performance. There would also be no guarantee of the background process getting enough time to keep up and avoid the server running out of ItemID's and crashing. The DT process gives them far more control, and they can simply extend DT if there is a shortage of ItemIDs developing.
An example of the second is asteriod respawning. While it's entirely possible to do this while the server is online, it could lead to some undesirable effects. Just imagine if you're ratting in a belt that's been mined out. The spawn script gets to you and ambushes you with a few dozen veldspar roids, trapping you between them. Not fun, I'm sure you'd agree. Exploration and mission areas do spawn all the time and avoid this because they spawn in a much wider area, and the likelihood of any player being there when it spawns is negligable.
Hotfixes are also applied during some DT's without us really knowing (as a client patch is not required for these), and hardware taken in and out of the cluster for maintenance as required. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Downtime never last an hour anyway. I've logged in at 30mins past the hour and it's let me in. I guess the actual maintenance takes about this long, with the other half hour as buffer in case they mess up somewhere. Doesn't always work though.

i would suspect they down their processes/applications in sequence apply any minor fixes/changes then reboot their blades in sequence perhaps even some DB maintance. |
