So...how many metalheads play EVE? What bands do people listen to?
I'll start off by saying my favorite band is Dark Tranquillity, but I also listen to plentiful Amon Amarth, (old) In Flames, At The Gates, Slayer, Anata, Opeth, Nevermore.
Fav. album: Haven - Dark Tranquillity
Also, have any old school metalheads found any new bands that live up to the high standards set by the old bands? Best I've found are Ceremonial Oath and Unearth...but in general i have a tough time swallowing metalcore when all I really want is death metal

Maiden is good times. Metallica...I have a very mixed opinion of them. i think their first and third albums are masterful, their second and fourth are worth listening to, and everything else is kind of terribad. Similar story for sabbath - LOVE their first two albums, okay with the next two, and then eventually they hire Dio and I stop liking it.
Re. rhapsody and dragonforce...I'll bite my tongue. I respect it (rhapsody more than dragonforce, but still), it's just hard to like speed metal when you listen to so much death metal.

it's nu-metal not new metal, it's a rather more simple mainstream typ of music. Normally one guitarist that just plays chords, kinda no skill at all tbh. Thats my definition of it anyway.

Good selection. I'm a big metal fan myself, pref old school and death/grind kinda stuff. Not such a big fan of a lot of the newer metal coming out these days. If you're like me, I recommend heading down to Wacken. I've been going for 7 years now and its never failed to amaze me with its amazing line ups. Speaking of which, next year Carcass and At The Gates are reforming and playing Wacken!

Anyone like Dream Theater?
They have a couple of albums that would be classed as Metal ...
Otherwise, second favourites are: Opeth, In Flames, Maiden, Old Slipknot (not Volume 3) - and I have to mention Metallica they were the ones who got me into Metal in the first place.
And when I say 'favourites' I kinda mean ... the only bands I really listen to.
Favourite Album: Any Dream Theater album.

I listen to all kinds of metal but generally dislike what is referred to as "Nu-metal". Too much strutting around without actually playing well.
But bands I like: Tool Dream Theater Black Sabbath Candlemass (when they have fatboy singing that is) Metallica (Master of Puppets era) Celtic Frost Nevermore Nightwish (not truly heavy, but I really dig their emo metal if you want to call it that ) Iron Maiden too many bands to name for right now.....

I've been a metalhead for more than two decades now, ever since that fateful night when I caught AC/DC's "Hell's Bells" by chance on the radio and it blew me away.
Favourite bands have changed along the years... lately I'm listening a lot to Nile (downright brutal and technical death metal but with a pronounced middle-eastern theme, due to ancient-Egypt uber-geek Karl Sanders), and Akercoke, a death / black hybrid who are turning more and more progressive on their later albums (I'm a sucker for a lot of prog music too - I would actually classify Tool as being "metalish" proggers...)
Over the last years I've been listening as well to quite a few of the bands that have been put by pundits under the "post-metal" moniker... bands such as Neurosis, Cult of Luna, and most particularly Isis ("Celestial" and "Oceanic" are nothing short of sublime).
A lot of my favourite bands have already been mentioned, but I'm going to add one of my all-time favourites: Mr. Bungle - for those who don't know, this was the original band Mike Patton had before being recruited for Faith No More, and which he maintained as a side project of sorts, putting out 3 very different - yet bona-fide classic - albums.
On their early demos they started out as some sort of death metal outfit, but by their first album proper they came across as a bunch of wacked-out metalheads spinning '80s British ska records while tripping on mushrooms.
Their second album, "Disco Volante", sounded quite different... more specifically, as if the mushroom trips had gone way out of hand and triggered a massive state of psychosis that irrevocably compelled band members to deconstruct music to its core primal elements, only to redefine it in ways it was just not meant to be.
Their final and third, "California", is a more conventional sounding affair, and - aside from a couple death metal riffs that slipped by here and there - definitely not metal anymore, though still retaining the Mr. Bungle trademarked weirdness and off-beat lyrics.
All three of them very recommened listenings.

Speaking of black metal, a recent band I feel deserves more attention is Leviathan. In the spirit of Burzum, Leviathan is really a single guy doing everything by himself, and if you are familiar with early '90s Norwegian black metal you won't find any surprises here... Leviathan is not precisely out to break new ground, sounding almost as a Darkthrone / Carpathian Forest / Burzum tribute band... but the thing is, he just does it very well (unlike countless others emulating old-school black metal).
Grim, gritty and lo-fi home-recorded production values (though admittedly better sounding and more sophisticated than the Darkthrone approach to making records), pacing the blastbeat-and-tremolo-picking-happy riffery with slower, quieter and haunting atmospheric interludes.
Of his two albums to date, if someone wants to check Leviathan out I'd recommend starting with the first one, "The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide", despite the tacky title (he's openly admitted to writing silly lyrics and being "no poet" by any means, though this doesn't detract from the listening experience as they are incomprehensible anyway).
As has already been said on this thread, Old Man's Child is another great black metal band I feel deserves more attention (seems to me that since Galder got swallowed by the Dimmu Borgir juggernaut not much is being talked about Old Man's Child anymore). "In Defiance of Existence" is a superb piece of symphonic and polished black metal, without falling into the trappings Dimmu Borgir sometimes indulges in, that I never tire of listening over and over again.

Oh, Red Sparowes is amazing amazing stuff.
It is all instrumental, more relaxed type stuff, I am at la loss for the words right now, but At The Soundless Dawn is the album, if you want, I can put the MP3s up somewhere. Alone and Unaware, the Landscape was transformed in Front of Our Eyes is probably the best song on the album.

Well, on my list you have: Black Metal, Death Metal, Gothic Metal, Doom Metal, Thrash Metal and sub genres of those, so tell me, which one is my favorite or at what point did I even mention genres?
For example I hate Power Metal, is it a form of metal? Yes. Do I like it? No.
So this has nothing to do with genre, it has to do with definitions of metal, which go beyond having guitars and the likes.
And speaking of TOOL.... curiously don't they appear on the Encyclopedia Metallum, but Metallica does..... I know it is user based, but....

Thats utter rubbish, you can't distingush diffrent time periods. Lighter metal and harder metal etc. are all diffrent, lighter in one aspect and harder in the other.
Yes Slipknow, KoRn etc ARE metal, nu-metal to more specific. From your list it seems like your a true metal fan. Black, death etc. Those are the heavier darker forms, then the lighter nu-metal, melodic death metal (g÷teborg sound/metal).
Tbh everyone I've spoken to have diffrent views to metal, so theres no real point in arguing with you, you have your view, others have thiers.

TOOL are metal justa weird type of metal, why? Do you play the guitar? You hear it automaticcly in the guitar sound, thats the biggest diffrence between metal and hardrock and other music styles etc.

Well, to me the definition of metal goes way beyond the sound of the guitars, to me metal has to do with the feelings, the themes, the lyrics, those goosebumps you have when you ear certain sounds at night.
In that light, Nu-Metal isn't metal at all, even The Gathering is more metal then most if not all Nu-Metal.
To me Nu-Metal was something invented so that people that listen would feel "cool" to be in the Metalhead scene (no offense to the presents).
It has nothing to do with speed also as, for example, Gothic Metal and Doom Metal are not about the speed of the rifts or the drums.
But then again, this is how I see metal.
