Do mines still exhist in the game? I was wondering about this after reading a topic about it. I thought they would be pretty cool and useful things, but it seems like the way they used to be (I guess they exploded on everyone, even friendlies) made them never used. So I guess that is all I really want to know.

Mines were fun for some, but they were also great swarms of lag, and so were removed. There's still a few blueprints for mines out there, but serve no purpose other than collector's items and scam material. Mines can NOT be used at this time. _______________________________

Can someone please explain what they used to be like? I am really interested in the idea of having space mines and want to purpose to add them back, but I want to know why they failed the first time.

Did I not mention the L A G? Massive clouds of these things required constant calculations for distance/collission. A busy mine-layer could have a system seriously bogged down and pretty much impassable. (lag + explosions)
Mines were removed in order to get rid of LAG. Clear enough? _______________________________

No that explains the side effects of the mines, not any information on what the mines were like themselves. All you are telling me is that they created lag, yeah I get that, but how were they layed out, approx. what was their damage, volume, did they have to be anchored, how long they lasted, NOT that they caused L A G. I got that from your first post.

Mine-layer deploys mines, gets to safe distance, leaves, whatever. Hapless victim enters area, not knowing that there are mines in the area, gets a little too close to one and BOOM.
Some of the players that were around back then had plenty of fun just saturating a few choice spots with hundreds and thousands of mines. Navigating around an asteroid belt or approaching a jumpgate/POS could quickly become a lesson in pain.
My corp's CEO used to deploy full loads of mines in places, log off for the night and log in in the morning to see the killmails of whoever wandered into the trap. _______________________________

Hope he was in a station when he logged out
And then there's the ones who did this and forgot where they put them...
