Greetings. I have just been informed that buying ISK is illegal. I was unaware of this. Is this ture or just propaganda? I did buy a small amount of ISK so I need to know and wether I should dispose of it or not. I am sorry if it is illegal. What should I do?

Edited by: Argenton Sayvers on 24/11/2007 22:52:06 1. It sure as hell is not illegal (in 1st world countries). No idea about Shariastan though.
2. Buying ISK is eula-illegal, immoral, inhuman. Its cheating, against the rules, and is considered to be very lame. Unless you do it the RIGHT WAY(tm). In this case, you will be an eve hero!
3. If you do something which might be illegal, covering it up might be a better course of action then running around shouting wildly. Just a hint for the future...

Buying isk is illegal yes. Honestly, the GM's will find out sooner or later. So i would write a very polite letter to the GM's, and explain that you didnt know it was illegal, and get them to remove the sum you bought, without setting you into minus balance.
If they find it without you telling them, they WILL set you into minus balance.

It is against the rules.
Generally, from what I've heard, first/small infractions will result with the ISK being deducted from your wallet, and serious infractions (repeated or large) will result in temporary or permanent banning.

Why would you want to buy ISK? That's paying money to avoid actually playing a game. It really isn't hard to earn ISK in EVE.
If you want to return the ISK and report yourself, just set up an exploit petition and apologize profusely to the GMs?
P.S. If you really really really insist on buying ISK, the "legal way" is to buy a game-time card and resell it through CCP's GTC sales system. The prices are ~200m for a 30 day and ~380m for a 90 day.

Buy a GTC from one the the official retailers, then sell that GTC on the forums, use the secure trade method to transfer it to the buyer.

In time you will be able to earn ISK much faster.
It is hard when starting, but that is part of the challenge of the game.

Just because doing X doesn't earn much ISK doesn't mean one cannot earn more ISK doing something else.
Hint: Mining is not a very profitable profession, especially in empire, and especially without a mining barge.

Buying ISK from websites isn't illegal - at least, not in any country I'm aware of.
Buying ISK however is against the EULA - which means the rules of the game as set down by the publisher CCP. If they catch you doing it, and they probably will (definately will now that you have posted), they have the option to ban you from the game permanently.
The ethics behind buying ISK is debatable - and Ill let those who are more passionate than me debate those ideals with you.
At the end of the day - if you want to purchase ISK for real money, there is only one way you are allowed (by the publishers, CCP) to do this without getting into trouble. You buy Game Time Cards from CCP (or their re-sellers) and then sell those to people for ISK. CCP has even set up a structured and secured way to do this.
The reasons for this are pretty simple - CCP doesnt want anyone else to profit in real life from their intellectual property (Eve). Rightly so too. So if you want ISK, buy a GTC from them and sell it in game.
Again, Im not going to inject my personal opinions on ISK Buying - just answering your question.
And yes, if you have bought ISK in a way which violates the EULA, I would recommend confessing to a GM and explaining your situation (point them ot this thread).

buying isk from isk farmers is against the rules, although they try to mislead you on that with their advertisements
buying isk from other players in exchange for game time codes that you buy from ccp is allowed

I could really care less about if you did or didnt buy isk, I think buying isk is wrong. What I care about is your claiming in post#16;

Its not my job to search your account, and if you did buy isk, I doubt that you posted with the same account anyways. What we did establish though is that you made a false statement.
That is all.

Hey guys im sorry. I did not know. It was only 50 million. Can you be generous and forgive me and let it pass? I have already divided 50 by 18 and passed out that money to 18 different people so I don't have it anymore anyway. Can you please forgive me and not petition me? Please Please .

In some places it is illegal. The last person who bought isk in Bongolia, for example, is now serving 15 years in a maximum security prison.

And when the CCP finds out, not only will you have negative amount of ISK, but also all 18 people will get that ISK withdrawn from their accounts (and also maybe get negative ISK).
Confessing to CCP is the only way to survive this!

seeing as how this is one of the few games that actually do ***** down on ISK purchases (or gold or credits or whatever the ingame currency is)... why do they not go after the ISK sellers?
Kinda like the police around here I guess... they'd rather bust the tennager with a dime bag than go after the 'unemployed guy' who drives the Escalade and jsut paid cash for a $15,000 set of rims.
On the topic of ISK sellers, would it do any good to report the chat spammers who advertise the websites where you can buy ISK???

They do go after ISK sellers.
Reporting characters spamming the in-game channels does only limited good because they just create new ones.
But when CCP tracks down an ISK seller they will ban him, and then follow the ISK trail as far as they can, issuing bans and seizing ISK as they go.
They come down hard on the buyers because they supply the demand. Where there is demand supply will surface.
CCP therefore wages this war on both fronts, again buyer and sellers.
They are limited on what they can tell us about their tactics, because obviously people will adapt to avoid them.

You will only normally go -ve balance if you have less in your account than you bought. I know somebody who bought 5bil (for Dreads and Carriers). They went to -3Bil after the GM's took the money back. He got a polite eve-mail stating what had happened and warned him not to buy ISK again.
AT -3Bil you can't really do much, as you can't buy modules, trade, repair, or update your clone :( You've really gotta just set a long skill, stay docked and use an alt! |
