Well, might as well conjure up yet another post about carriers and exploration. I can afford a carrier (or three). I am skilled for a carrier. I am curious as to how useful carriers are, and what their application are, in 0.0 exploration. Please only post if you have experience in such.

Carrier doesn't get a scanning bonus. Buy a Cov-ops to scan the sites down. Depending on what it is and my limited experience, I'd say the following:
Grav site: Buy a Rorqual and help your Hulks mine it. If you insist on using the carrier then use it as defence for whatever spawns in the belt.
Radar: Can be done in a good battleship for a fraction of the cost. If you're loaded in isk, then maybe a faction BS would be better. Something like a Rattlesnake...lots of mids for tank and hack modules, good dps etc. Navy Raven, Mega Navy issue...all those come to mind before a carrier.
Mag: I suppose you could do it in a carrier again, but 90% of the Mag sites I've encountered I could do in a standard raven with some T2 equipment.
Ladar: No experience in them, can't help you
Unknown: Most of those I've encountered (including a nice 8/10) had gates, rendering your carrier useless.
Add to it the need for a cyno each time you need to jump out of system etc, and a carrier for exploration is not the best investment of your isk. My very humble opinion...buy a CNR if you want to spend that sort of isk on a exploration ship.

Constructive, informative post. Just what I was wondering. Many thanks. I was thinking about whether the tanking/remote repping ability may be useful.

Useless post. Everyone has to learn things somehow, and eavesdropping on Alliance chat only does so much.

Does the "alliance" concept mean anything but "eavesdropping" to you?

Well, yes the tanking and repping ability would be handy, but again it's one hell of a expensive setup to risk. For arguements sake I'm going to assume you join a 0.0 alliance with some POS's in the systems you scan in. You find a Radar site, but it spawns some mean waves. I'd personally then drop the carrier at one of the POS's, and assign fighters to the ship(s) clearing the Radar site.
If you insist on logistics, then invite a Guardian, Schimitar or Basilisk pilot along (depending on your tank etc etc). It's much cheaper and can jump out of system should hostiles arrive. If your primary concern is Grav sites, then obviously a Rorqual is a good investment.
A carrier wasn't designed for this in mind, and I'd hate to see you lose a 2billion+ isk investment while doing some exploring. A rigged + T2 fit Raven is maybe 200mill or so and can cope with most things. Throw a loggi ship in and you're good to go. I'm in Angel territory, and even a Tempest with some faction EANM's / Reppers etc would cope fine and be quite a bit less of an investment.

Ahh, I was indirect in my questioning of whether the tanking capabilities are worth the cost; you hit my indecision head on. Now that you mention "designed for this", it seems that I am dancing around the topic of the "swiss army knife of EVE" that CCP claimed carriers were becoming but shouldn't be.
I've never had the opportunity to run a 10/10; any idea whether a full remote repping Guardian would be enough to stabilize another specialized armor tank for the complex? Or would everyone need to chip in a remote rep or two?

Just curious, why are you trying to provoke me into an off topic argument? This is an online forum, I've accepted that I am ignorant; please don't try to make me feel bad/make yourself look smart.

It's been awhile since I have ran a 10/10, but back in the day you could do that if your main tank was speed tanked + the guardian. I highly doubt you would be able to rep tank this without a serious gang tank.

I've never had the opportunity to run a 10/10. The highest I've been involved with was a 8/10, and that was rather interesting. We didn't have a dedicated logistics ship so I reconfigured a Scorpion I had lying about. 4 x PDU's in low, LSE, Invuln II, Shield booster & shield boost amp + 4 Cap Recharger II's in mid, and 2 x Large Shield Transfers in high (along with some launchers). We ran it in a gang with a Megathron, 2 x Raven's, the Scorp and a Sacriledge. The Scorp was actually able to keep everything alive throughout the rooms.
Faction armor tanking modules are much cheaper than their shield cousins, hence using the Tempest or Typhoon as an example earlier. True Sansha EANM's are about 40 or 45million I think, with a decent Large Armor Repairer going for about 100mill isk (not the expensive Dark Blood stuff though). Fit a few good modules on your battleships and you're good to go! Leave the carrier for fleet ops, where it can repair ships, assign fighters and bbq those red flashy's
