Over the last week or so I've been having really bad lag problems when trying to play Eve - sometimes it's been taking me minutes to enter new systems, and a couple of times I've had to disconnect/reconnect to actually get in-system!
I'm trying to determine where the problem is, so here are a few tracert results to the Eve server (87.237.38.200):

So it looks like on these occasions, my connection has followed a different route to get to the Eve server and in the second instance the ping times are fairly drastically higher than the first instance In the first instance the game was running reasonably well, but in the second instance the lag was making the game pretty much unplayable.
The question I have is, where is the problem ? I'm thinking that it is probably at Virgin Media because the ping times have increased from the very first router onwards ? I've already started the process of obtaining a MAC code from Virgin Media to switch to a more reliable provider, but I wanted to double-check (before I make the switch) that the problem isn't actually at the Eve server end.

Edited by: Falkrich Swifthand on 26/11/2007 16:15:18 The ping is bad from the first hop out of your network, so it's not EVE's fault. Either there is incredibly high bandwidth contention in your street (and you're playing at peak time), your modem/router (or virgin's) is dieing, or you or someone else in your house is saturating your connection with downloads/uploads/p2p.
You're not running p2p are you?
Also, are you on Virgin ADSL or Virgin cable?
EDIT: Also maybe they're punishing you for going over your bandwidth cap. Virgins' is a peak-hours-only (6pm-midnight) cap, which is better than some other companies, but if you download heavily then you could have hit it and be suffering the consequences. nullnull |

Same isp same problem, its their problem, possibly to stop you hogging bandwidth. I have followed all the request they made in the end they say "at peak times some performance will be lost" My ar%e!!
works ok if I get up at 3-5 am, probably just greedy gits overloading the wire. I can see my exchange from the window and have no line problems, checking with PP shows its their routing where my problems lie.

Edited by: Manoah on 26/11/2007 19:54:02 I'm also with Virgin Media and if im in a system with 40 people or more it can take from 20 secs to a couple of minutes to load a system. On really bad days it can take 5 minutes just to active a module but I don't believe its the EVE servers just the incredible badness of Virgin Media
I'm even plugged into the test socket Your Anode Neutron Particle Cannon I perfectly strikes Gistum Depredator, wrecking for 295.3 damage. |

I am with virgin media and I have been having this same problem over the last week or so (despite Virgin assuring me that I wouldn't have any problems playing eve when I signed up). I have been on the phone to them countless times this week and everytime I keep getting a different answer. The last time I called up their technical department I was advised to change my package to a fixed 2mb to stop this from happening (I am still waiting for the change to take place). Although this problem has been known to Virgin for quite some time and they are unable to give a date as to when they can fix it.
If this doesn't work then I will also be applying for a MAC code! Does anyone know of any stable internet providers?

Can you update us in this thread what happens when your speed is reduced. At the moment i'm just running tests in the BT master socket and keeping an eye on it for the time being. I seem to get decent to good download speeds for my connection (max 3.5mb) but have trouble getting a ping under 100ms.
FYI - Bah this is same poster as Manoah above

Well like I said originally, I've contacted Virgin Media to obtain a MAC code - can't say I'm overly impressed ... they say it'll take 5 days to get the code, due to "technical reasons", which is a load of rubbish. The MAC code can be turned around within 24 hrs, but 5 days is their legal obligation according to OFCOM and they're pushing it right to the limit Ah well, I've not been impressed with the level of technical support from them in this matter, so I shouldn't expect any better service when transferring ...

Apparently virginmedia have started throttling game traffic on there adsl connections either switch to cable or change isp.

That would explain why I'm having the same problem as above. Right now I'm fine, in an hour I'll only be able to fly around due to lag screwing me up, by 6pm I won't even be able to log onto eve. Thanks for the info. To live is to die, and to die is to give life. Thus pain is a form of euphoria.

Edited by: Bambi on 28/11/2007 15:03:47 I doubt very much its due to you going over your bw limit as when this happens you get dropped to a limit of 5-600KB/sec which is a hell of a lot mor ethan you need. This shouldnt really effect your ping. Have you tried using a proxy to bypass ntl's servers?
I know this doesnt help but my virgintl line has been fine even when I have gone over my stupidly low bw allowance, and dont even get me started on speeds, I max out at 13Mb, nowhere near the advertised 20Mb EVER.
P.S Looks like your 1st tracert is going via Guildford and the 2nd via Brentwood, there is a list of all thier proxies somewhere on t'internet you may have better luck specifying one of those rather than relying on the default one. Just google for ntl proxy server

I'm having the same problem. I'm on Virgin ADSL and is supposed to be cap less. But its getting really bad now. I've lost 2 ships and two pods in as many days due to this problem - I've been logging in for about five minutes only to find out that my ship was already in space and dead.

Same here, I think its something to do with them changing their port filtering, before I couldn't connect to eve well websites and general http/ftp downloads were really slow, with things like eve and bittorrent being exceptionally fast, now its flipped. I think in their attempt to stop bittorrent and other p2p they've effectively also limited/filtered online games too.
I'm thinking about moving myself so if anyone has any ISP recommendations they'd be welcomed here too.

I am also with Virginmedia and have been having the same problems. i have rang virgin and done all the checks etc and in the end I was told my line and my pc where ok and it was there problem at there end and when ask if they knew when it would be sorted, they told me that they had no idea when it would be fixed. Im gonna give till after trinity expansion and if that doesnt help im gonna get a mac code even though ive only been with them since mid oct. They told me also that they dont have a fair usage policy either but i would maybe lose speed occassionally, if I had been doing alot of downloading, which I dont.

After reading through the various tiscalli threads, a fix I've found is to change the port setting in prefs.ini from 26000 to 3724. It should go from looking like Quote: port=26000
to Quote: port=3724
That sped things up greatly and everything is really smooth now
