I have been thinking about this a bit, and I was wondering. There seem to be two types of players:
1:the power players that seem to rule EVE. Their main goal is beating every one to pulp taking as much advantage of the rules as they can. They are about exploiting the game mechanics to the utmost. And fair enough, there is something to be said for that. It's acertain style of playing. Tanking, camping, fragging whatever. Winning and loosing beating the other and the game. That's what it's about.
2: The role players. These are the players that are more interested in playing a certain character in this online universe. Cool storylines. Collorfull persons. Guided by honnor, faith, aliance, psychicinstabillity or frame of mind. If they attack it's because it's in line with the character they play. So if your a bounty hunter you will not go after a trader even if it would be very profitable, and f you a pirate you would not go after some dude sith aprice on his head because... well you know what it's like to be hunted, and at least while they are after him they are not after you. A true role player also wouldn't drop out of role on a chat channel. Ask him where he/she lives it will be atlanins or something not Dallas Texas. They don't care about winning or loosing because that is not what roleplaying is about for them. It's about living the part.
I think that a lot of the roleplayers often get frustrated by the power players and the powerplayers think that the role players are whining.
I would very much apreciate it if there was another eve started up especialy for the role players so the powerplayers can have the current world. I believe Everquest already has such a thing, but I'm more an SF man. It would be a good thing even though it would cut into the number of player in a single game. I would love it anyway.
Let me know what you think.

was only a matter of time for this to come up.
looks like your wish wil be granted soon (TM). the names of the two servers will be:
* empire space (consentual PvP only)
and
* 0.0 (PvP yet to be nerfed on that one)
limited travel between the two will be possible.

I don't think you understood the post, he wasn't talkin about pvp vs non pvp cause you can roleplay PvP you can be a pirate and a role player. RP vs Non RP isn't the same debate as carebare vs pirate.

i understand that. my reply was rather sharp as the last thing the game needs at the moment is a split of its playerbase.
two servers will end up with a restricted/consentual PvP one vs one with more PvP, with the former being the RP one. (he s hinting to it in his post as well, "powerplayers", "ganking", ...) all the carebears will join the RP one as well, roleplaying some weak scum there, i guess. the only way to keep them from doing this will be a RP test beforehand and petions each time someone is acting out of role. (telling that he s living in Texas, e.g.)
in the end this would need 3 servers then, which could leave the (few) roleplayers with lots of (stupid) faction NPCs to roleplay with.
sorry, even after giving it a second thought: terrible idea!

THIS IS NOT GONNA HAPPEN
sorry to say but ...
and please don't complain about power gaming, every other MMORPG has much more problems with them.

One of the biggest reasons I tried EVE in the first place is the one world thing. I'll never be able to play a MMO with multiple "servers" again.

Not wanting to split the player base is a valid arguement. However I think there is such a large base that it should not be a problem. The setback will only be temporarely because it will atract new players.
Maybe I'm naive. But I don't think the powerplayer will come over to the role player server if you state clearly why the second game is there. Also confining one character to one game should do the trick. Also if a player isn't behaving, you could have a talk with him and a verry verry last resort kick him out. Role playing is rather subjective so you need as always a good, inventive and fair game master who rules absolute.
I don't think there would be a few on the roleplaying server but quite a lot and it will atract a new share of players because a lot of people shy away from mmorpg because of this conflict which is there no matter what you say.
If it's not a succes you can always go back to the way it was.
I do object to role players being soft. Because you can play a psychopath though you have to play the strengths as well as the weaknesses of such a character. It's not better or worse it's just a different way of aproaching a game.

You guys need to see this from a business point of view. Being in the growing part of the life circle, you do NOT make changes that: 1. Doubles contribution (and yes, it WILL double if you work with 2 servers); 2. Make the player base (world) smaller.
Impossible idea. ------------------------------------------------- Lying Scumbag |

Edited by: Xaffax on 06/03/2004 23:28:33 To lurk: I'm not complaining. I'm merely doing a suggestion that I think would make a certain playerbase verry happy.
In general: Why are people so woried about another game? Is it that they will loose their easy prey and only be confronted by players with the same killing mentality?
