I read in the paper this morning that Iceland is now ranked the #1 country for quality and standard of living worldwide (on a list of 177 countries). That means, Iceland is /the/ place to be on this planet nowadays.
Surely this must be because of the lavish beerfests and orgies that CCP regularly throws for their employees, which skew the statistics!

I'm guessing the survey doesn't take into account living on an frozen lump of active volcano in the middle of the North Atlantic, thousands of kilometers from anywhere else, which some ppl might find... not optimal.

Plus they don't have trees. Man, how's a guy supposed to survive without trees? It's a gloomy prospect and I'm pretty sure the lack of trees explains Bj÷rk perfectly. I know of no other theory that explains Bj÷rk better than the now legendary "Bj÷rk: What happens in the absence of trees" theory published in 2004 by the Icelandic philospoher Tappi Tfkarrass.

On the contrary, that was one of the key reasons it was chosen as #1. When the nukes eventually start raining down, who's going to drop one on Iceland? Thats right, no one. --- "There are to many of them! We are out numbered! We need reinforcements!"

Except that there is a big NATO base at Keflavik. And Iceland is fairly key to the defense of the northern atlantic. ---

i lived in Iceland for 7 wonderful years, and I have to say I completely agree that Icelanders have the best standard of life in the world, however I am sure what the article doesn't say is that too enjoy this wonderful quailty of life, most icelanders have two jobs and have borrowed heavily from the banks.
But like I said, Iceland is without a doubt one of the most stunning countries I have ever seen in my life. The lack of trees is a bit of a myth, as Iceland does have forests, just they are few and far between....you try growing to any decent heights in those winds and constant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions... But Iceland for beauty is not just about trees, it is about majestic waterfalls and hot springs....any country has to rate as super cool when you have streams of naturally hot water!

I went to University there, in my fourth and final year I finally got around to visiting them! It was worth it though, especially as students of Bath get in free

For those that have read Tom Clancy before he went mad, Red Storm Rising paints a very vivid picture as to why someone might drop a nuke on Iceland, or at the very least invade it :)

Clancy's description of Iceland, and the research I did following my reading of RSR, put it third on my list of countries I'd most like to explore, after England and Amsterdam.

Amsterdam isn't a country... Though, with how small Holland is, it might as well be.

I was going to qualify it, but I hoped those here were savvy enough to know I meant just what I said. Amsterdam is one of three Significant Designations of Locality I would like to visit. For purely vicarious pleasures, of course. ----- TANSTAAFL

I guess the study also fails to mention when you have one of the largest natural gas reserve in the world artificially subsidizing an extreme socialist economy that would NEVER survive without it... you can create a great standard of living.
Im happy for them and all.. its great their government isnt corrupt and feeds that money back to the populace.. but make no istake that their natural resources and a small population are the reason they have that ranking.

1. Iceland is a fishing nation. 2. Iceland is not an extreme socialist country
Like the other Nordic countries, Iceland has a mixed economy that is mainly capitalistic but supports an extensive welfare state. Social expenditure is, however, below that of mainland Scandinavia and most of western Europe.
The Icelandic economy is highly dependent on the fishing industry, which provides 70% of export income and employs 4% of the workforce

And? You wrote "extreme", which it is not. There's nothing wrong with a socialist state, rather oposite. --- Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

Then so is Germany. And France. And the UK. And the USA. And and and...
Hint: social welfare != socialism != communism. Please be more precise in your statements. If you are not exactly sure what I mean, Wikipedia is your friend.
