Not knowing the time limit's, I chose to up a skill that jumped taking 17 hours to 10 days!. I really need to train other skills over such a time period being a newbie. So what is the penalty to cancel it? I've heard there is one, but can't seem to locate the formula or whatever. Is it really crippling? Thanks!

If im following you correctly if you cancel a skill that you have allready started training, all that happens is you loose any progress you have made since you started to train that skill.. It will just drop back to what ever level it was at before you started training it.
Does that make sense?
i.e you have engineering at lvl 2, you start to train it to 3 then realise you dont want to continue and want to train another but by this time engineering is now at lvl 2 and a half, by aborting training of engineering you loose the half and engineering will be back to lvl 2!

Alternatively, dont abort the training simply start training whatever you need to train.
Your current training will stop, but you won't lose anything. ie if you are 2 days into your 17 day training, when you come to recommence that training you will still be 2 days in.

I have experimented with this, and cancelling training in a skill does not reset it back to the original amount when training was started. I may lose a couple of skill points but not the whole amount. I started training a skill that was at 250, waited until it got to about 700 and cancelled. After I cancelled I had 698 in the skill. ------------ Ashen Black

Cancelling a training schedule does not lose any points except maybe one or two, most people will train a skill that takes several days in sequential overnight periods, and will switch training to other skills during online playing time.
I'm training Acceleration Control to Level 4, its a Rank 4 skill and it's taking around 7 days to do, I'm about halfway through and I train other skills inbetween, leaving it for overnight.

handy for moving those expensive skillbooks through troublesome space (assuming you could train any of them at will) just drop each skill in a station hanger for a moment, and choose to train it, then do the next, and the next. you will only get a tiny fraction of each trained before going to the next, but that will be enough to keep the skill safe inside that enhanced skull of yours.

More than youl ever need it says on the game info screen on this site I think.
Just train the way most do... leave your long skills training while your asleep/work or whatever and train the shorter ones while your online or during day
