Hey all!
I'm pretty new to EVE - played many RPG's, but I'm wondering what's in store for me in EVE. What is it that most folks do as they progress? I don't see missions keeping my interest very long.
Thanks!

basicly, its up to yourself to create your own goals, there isnt alot of limits to what you can do, other than your own imagination.. just keep the goals realistic before moving on to the next thing you want to do. Dont focus too much on learning skills in the start - train some fun skills also..

Short answer: PVP
Slightly longer answer: Corporation/Alliance goals. In my case our goal is to shoot other players so thats what I do, yeah.

0.0 warfare is endgame.
Once you control your own space and fight wars to take others you are "raiding".

Endgame? No such thing. You do what you want, when you want. Create your own goals and see them through. Whether you choose to be a deep-space industrialist in 0.0 and create a colony of your own, or whether you choose to roam the spacelanes as a pirate, is all your choice.

Do that. Then when/if you get bored of it, do another thing. Look at the map: there's your playground.

Forget missioning. Endgame is what you want it to be. Trade, invention, mining, piracy, mercenary-ing, 0.0 territory wars, exploration, etc etc...

Edited by: Deviant Tactician on 29/11/2007 23:14:52 Build a colony... what is that? Can I create spacestations? If so, what would their function be?
Joining a corporation - is that for pvp? I would consider Shadowbane as one of my top gaming experiences. It had city building and sieges, as well as enough player diversity that I was able to come up with a unique player that was near invincible. It was great for leading battles in that I could call and stun targets... allthough there was no chance I could kill them since I sacrificed offense for defense. heh What do corporations obtain - planets / merchants / etc?
Thanks for all the responses!

There is no endgame!
People build up their skills, isk and assets to PVP.
PVP can be on a small "owning noobs" scale. Or you can use your assets to provide for many and run your own corp or alliance, with aims to control space. You can also do this in someone else's alliance, working your way up to become someone important.

Edited by: Shadowsword on 29/11/2007 23:18:59 As many others already said, in Eve you set your own objectives. You can run a trade empire, or fight among others in wars involving thousands, or even tens of thousands players for weeks or months, be a pirate, an inventor, a miner, all sort of things. The end-game is what you decide it to be.
Quote:
Build a colony... what is that? Can I create spacestations? If so, what would their function be?
You can build space stations, yes. They're called outposts. they generate income for you, since the people living around the station pay taxes, but you'll have to defend those stations against other players.

In the old days before battleships and such my goal was a cruiser and then battleships came out and my goal was a BS and then T2 stuff and POS's and capital ships.
CCP keep moving the damn endgame. If they had stopped at cruisers I would have left a long time ago and had a life. The bastards keep adding new stuff and pushing the endgame further away.
I fear that the end game is out of my hands and I am stuck for life.

If people consider being 1% of the final outcome in a battle, or even being needed there the endgame of EVE, then I will happily announce that I will never be part of the endgame. If you want to actually be needed and further more important to your gang, then low sec is the way to go.
Personally I like gangs where every ship and speciality counts, bringing as many battleships with 200+km range as possible is not really what I consider neither fun nor strategic.

A goal a lot of players aim for is establishing their own area of sovereignty in 0.0. You build your own stations and have POSs out the ying yang. That isn't an end game of course, but the start of a different type of game. Then there are players who have done all that and say "To hell with it. Lets go be pirates."

Actually there is no "endgame" - in a certain class of ship you can be "maxed out" - if in a certain situation, where numbers are equal, your shiptype and skills are needed you might end up on top.
But so what - most fun is to go back to smaller ships, especially t1 frigs / cruisers, and just fit them nicely with t2, or be insane, and fit them faction, and have just fun...
Just look for the "endgame" that is most fun for you!
But I am just a grunt...

^^ this, the inbetween game is everything you do until that point. This isn't a game that has a specified goal. you can be a mercenary, a pirate, a 0.0 sov member, a producer, a highsec carebear based solely on what you feel like doing at the time. Just some things require more work than others.

To answer your question about corps-- They are to help players organize. They allow for corp warfare at all security levels, if you bribe CONCORD to allow it. They allow the group to hold ISK and assets in common-- so everyone can buy an expensive blueprint, for example, and lock it down with a vote so it can't be taken but used in that station.
Corps give an unhackable private channel for all members.
Being in a corporation allows certain members (who have the rights to do so, given by the CEO) to launch Starbases, also referred to as POS's. They are found on the market, and are used for logistics and for mining moons for advanced product manufacturing.
Being in a corporation also allows one to join (or create) an alliance, which is like a supercorporation with many corporations as members. Alliances can seize territory in deep space, if they can fight for it. Alliances can launch Outposts in this claimed territory. They can also build Motherships and Titans (if they are worth it to you).
There is no end game. Missions are an ISK-making distraction for those who don't want to pvp. Eve is centered around Empire-building, and Empire-destroying, and the economy that supports those activities.

I've come to a conclusion lately, EvE isn't really a game, it's a vehicle, it is other players are the game.
To the OP, endgame isn't a term that applies here, or maybe it aplies from the moment you first undock. There is truely no way to max out your character, to do so would take more time than the game has existed, and the number of skills increases at least once a year.
In other MMO's the endgame is where you stop leveling, and stop gaining new skills, and start working on getting gear to make your character competitive in PvP/Raids/Crafting. In EvE you never stop gaining new skills, you can effectively PvP and contribute to gang warfare from about the start of your second week if you do it right, raids don't exist unless its in PvP where it can be anything from a small gang to the largest fleet fights involving over a thousand players.
EvE is a galaxy sized playground, but it's up to you to define the rules in most cases, my advice is to get yourself into PvP look up the goonswarm wiki, that will give you a good Idea of what you'll need to get started, contact me ingame if you want some firsthand advice. ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

Hummm In most MMO, end game is when you're max level. If you're going to aim towards that, you better start RIGHT now. :)
By the time you get there, you'll have a 4 year old daughter, a beer belly and WOW 3 will be coming out.
