I have been reading some fascinating stuff by Nate Comb here: http://scratchpad.roaringshrimp.com/ with regard to EVE as an MMO.
I've seen some really interesting stuff with maps and the API data here: http://www.eve-files.com/media/corp/CRII/Latest.jpg as well as other more up to date stuff.
I read that the EVE API can export data regarding market transactions.
Has there been any work done to construct a map that displayed market activity the way others display war activity or soveriegnty?
Would this be useful?
I wish the ingame star map had a selection for most or specific categories of market activity by system.

It would take a large data sample to be useful. The market transactions that are exported are those of your personal or corporate wallets. Not those of the entire region (which would be nice). The closest you can get to that data is export market orders (keeping in mind that data is only what could be) and analyze the differences or harvest the data from the history tab in the market window by hand/OCR. Either way its tedious.
If you could get a couple of traders for each region to donate their transactions you might have more success. However unlikely that is to happen though.

I was (and possibly still am, which is why I post) going to work on something like this. However, as has been said, you cant really do it comprehensively because you need access to every traders data...
My approach was(is?) going to be a little different; more presenting the information you already have in better visual formats for easy interpretation. Keeping track of your own transactions for historical data & general stats sounds like it has already been done (see EMMA thread elsewhere on this forum). I have yet to check out the extent to which that project visualises the data.

I'll preface this by stating that I am in no way a database/application programmer.
I have seen this statement come up a few times, quoted above. Would it not be feasable to set up a centralised MySQL database and when you fire up the application and automatically checks for exported market data and then uploads it from the export folder?
I know the main problem is that the API keys dont give access to the market data, because they actually dont have anything to do with the character, but rather the regions. But automating the uploading of manually exported data, and then compiling and analysing the collected data should be possible right?
The more people who used the app - the better it would be of course. Each character would just need to remember to export the market data perhaps once a day or once per login?
Just a thought - I could be way off base here.
