Quote:
Here's how Ubisoft deals with criticism:
A certain British gaming website had praised Assassin's Creed since it was announced. They'd run previews, interviews, did a lot to hype the game. When they played the final built, they finally realized it wasn't that great, so it got a 7/10. But instead of acknowledging AC's mistakes, Ubisoft got furious, pulled all ads from the site and cancelled all placed orders (mid five figures) indefinitely. A planned live interview with Jade Raymond isn't going to happen either. According to Ubisoft everything would have been fine though, if the site had just put an 8 instead of a 7 under the same text.
I wonder how they'll score Ubisoft's next game...

it's much easier to go berserk then to actually make a good game, I mean Ubisoft isn't going to put all that manpower in that game again just to add what was to be expected in the first place.

Hah.
I gotta say this isn't new and it isn't just Ubi that do this.
As you will notice most gaming websites and magazines are covered in ads and I assume paid for in large part by advertising revenue. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

game critics are finally growing some backbone and their companies sack them just because they gave a review that doesn't favour game X or Y.

Ironically I've heard from someone whose opinion I trust that the game is in fact very good, but reviewers tried to rush through it and thus had a bad experience with it. -

That game is so damn repetative I think it just gave me cancer.
Heard that Jade woman had a comic made about her and ubi soft threw a huge tantrum over it or something. --------

A 4chan / deviantart animu-pederasty enthusiast drew a comic of her uh... servicing 3 fanboys while wearing a bikini (I think the bikini was in response to a rumour about her appearing in a FHM or GQ or somesuch in a bikini). It wasn't especially funny, clever or well drawn and was in response to her being front-staged for marketing purposes.
A goon posted the thing on SomethingAwful and Ubi not understanding how the internet works decided to sue SA. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

You can just substitute 'The Internet' for this verbose description. -

after ubisoft insisted to use starforce for so long (lucky me had nearly no problems with it) i just decided not to buy ubi-published games for a long time.
well i bought double agent, but i finished it in two days and brought it back to get a nintendo game, so basically ubi didnt get money from me
anyways, until i hear leagues of games praising ubi for being the first publisher that doesnt rush to releases anymore and having perfect support and whatnot i simply WONT buy ubi games anymore. same goes for EA, btw.
i have no problem with that, i have been doing that for years, and i will continue to do so. sometimes its hard, but all in all i feel like im doing the right thing
i only wish i could get more people to not buy any stuff from ea or ubi...

It is a problem with the media. Has anyone heard about the gamespot Editor being fired over his Kane and Lynch review.
Gamespot had full site advertisements etc running for weeks. So when the ED reviews it and gives it 6/10 Eidos gives them a not too happy phone call. Penny Arcade run with it. Quickly fashioning there own views in comic form.
I never fully trust a game review, and recent events have just cememnted my resolve.

Edited by: Sereifex Daku on 30/11/2007 20:40:21 Forgive me for possibly being naive but I say it's about time that the governments of the world step in and introduce some kind of new law that protects critics from this sort of thing. I'm not sure how, exactly, it would work, but I'm sure it can be done.

I stopped reading any of the game mags a year ago, following a conversation at a games development conference. I was chatting with the former head of PR for a certain company (note I'm being very vague to protect identities), and we were laughing about the magazine reviews... particularly, we were taking the p*ss out of Edge magazine for being a bunch of uterly pretentions ego-****ers with a set of awards they had given out, the UK winner of which was a game that was sold only in japan, had no translation to english, and was sold only for 3 months before being withdrawn. as it was said there, how much more elitist could it get?
at that, we descended into a very satisfying b*tching session about how bad the press was; during which his professional input on the astoundingly corrupt ratings process for the mainstream magazines was made clear - he explained how in previous jobs, he would actually go so far as to bribe the magazine to get front cover artwork, and 2-3 two-page spread adverts, in exchange for uppingthe rating... other companies have done similar things: the "if you dont give us a 9/10 score on 'Super Corrupt PR Departments III' you will not get any advertising funding from Electronic Ubiprose MicroArts this quarter" type threats are quite common, it seems.
Suffice it to say the side-stories of some of the bribes/perks/offers the journalists get are quite astounding, and also quite unprintable... but I was rather shocked. nowadays the only magazine I read is Develop

This is common. Even when you look for non-mainstream gaming websites for reviews, you will find websites that are basically begging for interviews and sneak peaks from companies. One such website had in its blog how it was trying to secure an interview with some game maker. If the website game the game the proper score of 4/10 - I doubt they would get the interview (thay gave it a 9/10). Its not just websites that make money from advertisements, its also websites trying to make it big and websites whose operators just want to get some cool stuff. |

I actually like GS, except for the fact that every "upgrade" to the site in the last 8 or so years has made it more difficult to view or find any useful info, but I digest...
The fan reviews can shed a lot of light on whether or not the official one is any good. All you have to do is learn to recognize the fanboi and troll comments in the reviews, often in the title, and you can get a healthy understanding of how good or bad the game is.
