I am just a few days away from finally being able to pilot a Raven. I can't decide if I should go for Cruises or Torps first.
I know torps are getting a pretty sweet bonus in Trinity, so I'm thinking I might lean that way a bit.
I'd like to use it for both running level 4s and PVP. Obviously in the long run I intend to have both torps and cruises well trained, just trying to decide what to focus on first.
Thanks!

I'd say cruises first. They're less dependant on missile skills to be usable. ------------------------------------------

If you want to do mainly PVP: Go Torps If you want to do mainly PVE: Go Cruise

Wrong way round? :P
Cruise are affected by the missile skills.
OT: If you're going to be npc'ing for isk then train cruise first. Torps are getting a bit specialised with wednesdays patch. [Balance] The Caldari problem. |

I would say it depends on what you will be using it for mainly, missions or PvP.
PvP: definitely Torps since the boost means you'll dish out massive amounts of DPS. The shortened range doesn't matter too much in PvP since most small gang fights are close-quarters.
Mission: Cruise. Torps are having their explosion radius nerfed to 600 meters. This means you'll need to sacrifice tank in order to fit Target Painters to deal full damage even to some battleships. The reduced range matter much more here since some factions (like Guristas) have ships that orbit at well over 40 km from you and have a better base speed than your Raven. Unless you're interested in sacrificing even more tank to put on a Afterburner, you'll have a hard time finishing the mission within reasonable times.

ahh thanks for the answers. I have a lot of SPs invested into missile skills, and didn't realize torps didn't benefit from those. Yeah I'll probably do more missions than PVP, so I think I'll go cruises first then work in some torps.
Thanks again!

Sure, but at the same time, you don't need to train missile projection/flight time much with cruises in pve. ------------------------------------------

Just so you know, most missile skills effect both torps and cruises, the skill "Guided missile precision" is the only one that doesn't effect torps. That said, cruise missiles are the better bet for PVE, due to the longer range and higher effectiveness against frigs and cruisers. ---------------------------------------------

Do not listen to these guys.
Just go for cruise. Better for PVP and decent for PVE
When you get tech2 cruise missiles you can fit fury missiles to increase your damage vs bigger targets and precision missiles to own small ships
also if you decide to train up for a manticore you will already have cruise missiles trained
another thing, with cruise missile setups you can fit your raven better, 2x large neuts or nos, hellyeah?

That is the case on Tranq right now, but check out the changes to torpedo launchers in the Trinity expansion. After Tuesday a torp raven is an absolute beast. Easily over 1k dps with better effective range than blasters or autocannons. ---------------------------------------------

I fly nothing but Ravens and Drakes. Sometimes a Caracal if I'm feeling suicidal.
I'm not the best PvPer for sure but PvP because that's where the fun is. I've lost at least 10 Ravens mostly to stupid mistakes on my part. A Raven CAN survive being primaried. This often happens when the FC realizes the Raven is doing a lot of damage and thinks its tank is weak because it's shield tanked.
I hardly ever run missions, so I would say I'm a PvP Raven pilot. Up until now I flew Cruise Ravens. After Wednesday I will be a Torp Raven pilot.
The Torp changes are very exciting. We have been holding our breath hoping the devs would not change their minds.
You get what I'm saying?
