For some bizarre reason, I really love the Drake. That being said, I've never tried PVPing in it other than some skirmishes with corp mates.
I've heard nothing but bad things about it and PVPing... but I'd like to try to make it work.
With a small gang (1-3 other gang members) would it be doable?
Obviously at least 1 of those other members would have to be a dedicated tackler... but what I am really concerned with is the fact that the Drake doesn't seem to offer a whole lot to small gang tactics. It's DPS isn't amazing, and it's strength (being a solid passive shield tanker) doesn't really matter because no one will bother shooting it who can't kill it, and those who can kill it will blast it pretty solidly!

The drake is a bona fide PVP monster but most people have no idea how to use it. Yes it's viable for small gang work, it just needs some scrams and webs to help it out.

Edited by: Wild Rho on 30/11/2007 15:53:12 I can't help with specific setups but my advice is ignore what other people tell you because 99% of the time they're just parroting what everyone else says. If you love the ship and want to pvp in it, do so. With some experience you'll most likely develop setups that work fairly well for what you want to do.
EDIT: Vitrael beat me too it.

With the RSD nerf, the "best" Drake fit is probably the HAM gank one.
7x HAM II MWD, web, scram LSE II, 2x Inv II 3x BCS II, DC II
hardener (cheap) or extender (not cheap) rigs 5x T2 hobbies You'll need AWU IV and a PG implant to fit the third BCS II though. PDS/RCU otherwise ![Sad](/images/icon_sad.gif)
With decent (not max) skills, that gives you around 550-600 DPS (terror rage) and a ~70k passive HP tank, with ~100-120 DPS peak regen tank.
With 3% implants and max skills (ha) it reaches 674 DPS, IIRC.

Something about the irony of someone making an "EFT warrior, play EVE not EFT" comment to someone who uses that Drake fit pretty much every day.
Meh, I've seen that kind of comment before. Last time I said here that a Drake could reach 600 DPS I got told to get a clue and that it couldn't get close to that. ![Sad](/images/icon_sad.gif)

It's been used plenty in game. Drop DPS to around 500 with faction ammo.

What about something like this (don't have much in HAMs right now, but will train em up)
7x Heavy Launcher IIs
2x LSE IIs 2x Invul IIs, 1x Target Painter II 1x Sensor Booster II
2x BCU IIs 2x SPR IIs
Just an early draft of what I might try. I pretty much have dedicated tacklers in my gang, so I think I could let them handling the scram/webbing

I've no idea how this fits (may be CPU problems), but I'd drop the SPRs for another BCS and a Damage Control. I'd drop the painter certainly and sensor booster possibly, for a speed mod and more tank/some tackle maybe.
The main thing to remember as a Drake pilot is that you're extremely unlikely to get primaried in gang, as people will generally think that you have a stupid tank and feeble DPS. Especially if you're spamming missiles from range. So you want to max out your gank. Currently this means triple BCS, then HMs and dampers, or HAMs and shield tank. But dampers will be nerfed hard with Trinity.

My HAM II's hit for like 53 dmg per strike on rats or pvp with T2 Missiles be it rage or Javelin. IS that normal? I usually do triple that or more with Heavies in general like Scourge.

HAMs do about 2/3 damage/hit and have twice the ROF (and 1/4 the range) as heavies. therefore, with an MWD and short-range tackle/ewar capabilities at the expense of tank, you can do some bastardly stuff in a small-gang drake

I know this is sacrilage to say, but I don't like hams. Basically they do less damage than other types of short range ammo, so generally not really uber.
Take advantage of the flavor of being Caldari/missile spammer/passive tanker and use heavies. Sit in the middle of the fight, listen to your FC call primaries, and spew missiles all over the place with no DPS downtime having to get in range between targets. You'll do almost as much damage per fight as your mates and probabally not spill your beer.![Twisted Evil](/images/icon_twisted.gif)

I like to stick with regular heavy missiles launchers, I have good skills for them as well so that makes me biased but they are also better for hitting frigs, especially if you have t2 percision missiles. Use Caldari navy for Cruisers+
as for the setup:
Highs: HML IIs, cloak optional, I often fit one but it depends on how your alliance/corp operates, in my case cloak > more DPS (plus it makes it easier to fit a good tank with the necessary utility and gank).
Mids: WEB, MWD, 3 x LSE IIs, Invuln field II, Cap injector w/ 800s
Lows: 3 BCU if you can fit em, if not use 2, fill the rest of the lows with SPR IIs
Rigs: EM, Kinetic, Thermal resist rigs, or if you want to really spend the cash, go for extender rigs.
This setup with a designated tackler (and if you can get another webber its much better) might not be the greatest thing ever but it really doesn't cost very much, tanks like a brick-s**thouse, and does a decent amount of DPS. The advantage is: this is one of the most versatile ships available for small gangs. It can field a few drones, its range is good (and not limited in short range combat). Very good ship to put inside a bubble right off the gate with some tacklers near it and snipers at range, has sufficient alpha to put the fear of god into anything sub-BC that doesn't have a pretty wicked (i.e. faster than your missiles) speed tank.
I have a feeling the Drake will quickly pick up a reputation as a HIC killer, its almost like it was meant for it, and with its passive tank if you abandon the MWD, cap injector, and web than you have a serious tank that can hold inside a bubble, take sustained fire and neut/nos and yet still have the oomph (and variable damage types) that will be needed to kill a HIC. Your signature exceeds the byte me limit allowed on the forums-Darth Patches Oh Noes!

You can drop the T2 launchers in favor of Malkuth ones, thus freeing up enough CPU to fit a gang mod, which could be usable by small gangs.

The drake is amazing for small gang pvp, set it up with e-war in the mid slots and BCUs in the low slots, or if you want more dps, set it up with heavy assault missiles, a mwd, and a light shield tank.

Not so sure I like the HAM all out DPS setups...
For starters you're gonna have to look out for alot of ships, nanos mainly. With precision you'll be relatively safe from them (unless there are several). Maybe with the agi buff things will get better but I still sometimes find it hard to run from a mega/vindicator if I'm not properly aligned... I wouldn't be all too happy about running into a sacrilege aswell.
- 600 DPS is mighty impressive for a drake though.
