Me and my friend are planning to start a mining only corp in the near future.
Because I will be in charge I'd like to know how corps run mining OPs.
1)How to properly distribute the ore? I thought that at the end of the op, all ore that was mined in between miners goes to hangar and then gets evenly distributed between miners... Is that a good idea or it's done in a different way? How do I get profit for the corp out of this? Tax the miners? Ask for a % of earnings? I want to make sure that every miner will want to participate in mining ops instead of wanting to leave because of boredom or high taxes.
2)How to get all miners to mine in one place and do it together? so far it looks like no one wants to mine together in my current corp. People are too lazy to all fly to one spot and mine there. But if people don't mine together, then there's no point in a mining op, and no point in a mining corp!
3)How to deal with people who say things like "Why should the ore be distributed equally when I'm flying a hulk and the other nub next to me is flying a bantam?" Everyone in the newbie mining corp cant have hulks. Someone is going to have mining barges, someone is going to fly frigates, and someone will have exumers. I want to make sure that people get along with each other.
4)Protection/Defence... How do major corps defend their mining ops from pirates and griefers? Do they have someone sitting in military ships at the belt defending the miners?
Any other tips you can give me that are essential for a mining corp?

I heard that ISS has a model or set of rules that works really well for all the things you mentioned. I even heard that they have it automated through an IG website. Would offer more details if I knew any more. |

My corp holds mining "ops" about once a week and we usually get good attendance. We have anywhere from 4 to 8 people mining and generally 1 or 2 people hauling.
We run the op for a set time period, usually 2 hours and we prorate so if someone leaves after 30 minutes or comes an hour late, they get their pro-rated share.
At the end, all ore is collected at our station and 10% of everything is donated to the corp off the top. Then the remaining 90% is sold to the corp and all participants are paid ISK based on their participation.
Some people in Hulks could make more ISK in the time period and some people flying ITTY 3s might get "more" than their share because they are new and contributing we give everyone equal shares based on time participated.

if you start your own corp you set the rules make it clear that there will be x numbers of ops per week where people are forced to show up
if they dont .. fine them or show them the door
there are a few spreadsheets and websites that calculate what everyone contributes so you can use that or simply pay per time
you will want someone with perfect standing (6.7?) to the corp and perfect refining skills
also mining forman 5 and mining director 5 is a goal you should set

I am a fan of the pay per time method, simply to help out the newer people get the ships that allow them to make a bigger contribution.
Best thing to do is, scout out a system for a good set of belts.
Figure out how many you will have mining, and arrange haulers and protection as needed (depending on how you plan to mine will factor in there)
Be sure to have everyone send a start and stop email during the operation, but keep an eye out for disconnects
For protection with jetcans, you need a bit more than if you have haulers sitting there emptying secure cans as miners fill them. But make sure you got enough firepower to handle rat spawns

Edited by: Aykido on 01/12/2007 01:53:29 First of all, get a mining foreman.
Once the Foreman has maxed out his skills, and is flying a Command Ship, he should plug in the mining director mindlink. With links blasing, every miner in his squad has his mining power boosted by over 50% and the range of his lasers also.
If you have more than 10 miners, have the director take wing command and send one ratter as squad leader into every belt you are mining, That way the director can conceivably boost up to 10 miners per squad. Work in unison. Each miner mines one ore only. Split the miners left right and center sweetspot. The ratter provides protection from belt rats and doubles as a salvager.
Have a perfect refiner no tax for the station the Ore is hauled to. You can rank members, and you have to log participation. After op refine everything, and appraise. Normal is to split according to ops share = (timexrank)
We use 30min time units for participation, and 3 ranks. Anyone who is maxed out (or near enough) is rank 3. Experienced participants are rank 2, and Noobs rank 1. If there is doubt about which rank participants belong to they are ranked higher.
Rank 3: Mining Director, Hulk Miner, Hauler with 27,5km3+ capacity, BS/CS ratter. Rank 2: Foreman, Barge/BS/BC Miner, Hauler with 14km3+ capacity, BC/HAC ratter. Rank 1: Frigate/Cruiser Miner, Hauler with less than 13,750 capacity, Cruiser of smaller ratter.
Appraising is a rounded price based on regional average price. Ranking and Mining Director bonus makes sure everyone benefits from participation beyond what they could do solo even if it is possible to get a higher market price than the appraised price.

Some sensible suggestions here...I've always done it by fair shares on time spent - older pilots are there to help the newer ones - but there can be rated shares if it seems sensible.
However, I'd comment on the Ore/Mineral value given....
I've always believed (Mining Director, with Implant, in Comd Ship) in paying Market value to everyone participating including perfect refining - that encourages people to sell to you - they get more (usually) and no additional hassle.
It's then up to the 'Corp' to make it's money off what it does with the Minerals - either selling them, or producing to sell. No Corp Taxes to put pilots off.

As for the minerals from mining, I usually get put to work building ships and ammo with the proceeds from corp mining ops. We've got a few newbs who are discovering the joys of that 'New Ship Smell' after we work them hard in the belts. It may not be a perfectly fair setup to all, but those of us in Exhumers aren't complaining. (and it is a blast to take a fully stocked belt out in a single sitting)
This method works for us, but then again, we all know each other out of game as well. _______________________________

There is no perfect way for 2 people to do anything together, so every corp will come up with a way that works for them, or join the ranks of the closed corps of eve.
One of my early corps had it set up where we mined for the corp for an hour, and mined for the miners ourselves for an hour. Everything went to the corp that first hour, and all the ore from the second hour went back to the miners. Everybody got an equal share, new players, hulks, haulers. Protection shouldn't be that big a deal if you find a quiet place to mine in high sec (after all, you need belts that haven't been picked over already).
This model penalizes the hulk pilots the most, but if you want to reward your bantam and osprey pilots and new haulers so they are loyal to your corp and stick around while they learn to fly barges, hulks, and iteron V's themselves, it's a pretty good system to reward newer players for showing up for the ops.
Of course, all the ore gets refined by the person with the maxed out skills and standing, another benefit from mining with the corp.

Most of the time we devide ore we just split it over the amount of people. Not a problem because all levels are about right (all in hulk/CS/38k hauler). Once in a week there is a op "for the corp" where we build ammo, modules, ships, mining crystals etc from. During the rest of the week people are free to mine alone or in groups, the ore (or minerals if the person has perfect refine himself) is contracted to the corp, which pays out 85% of market value. Ratting tax is 25%. For this ppl get free ships, ammo etc.

Some very good ideas ... here is what works for my corp. As this is a Corp event, all miners and haulers are treated and compensated equally. 2 "shares" for each miner, hauler or guard and 1 "share for the corp. Example: 5 man mining crew of: 1 hulk, 1 Retriever, 2 Osprey and an Iteron III. This makes 11 "shares" total as (2 x players) + 1 for the corp. The corpmate with the best refine does so and then the minerals are split 11 ways with each member getting 2 shares and the corp receiving 1. Of course, the more experienced miners can make much more alone but, this is a corp event and designed to build comraderi and help out the newer players as much as it is to make ISK.

Take a look at this program. Mining Buddy It's an online mining op helper. It's been a while since I have had it installed, but if I remember right, it's a nice little program. And, if you can't host it, I might for a small fee.

I have my own industrial corp and run weekly mining ops and don't have a problem. I Have 2 Hulks on seperate accounts and all the ore that is mined for the corp (100%) goes into the hanger.
In return the people who turn up, whether they mine or haul, can expenct free T1 ships up to cruisers (and retrievers) and below market prices for anything bigger. I also help people with their personal mining in the week if they are mining for something in partiular. I am also training advanced manufacturing and invention so T2 equipment and ships are just around the corner.
I find that asking players to donate a couple of hours of their time once or sometimes twice a week for these mining ops is not much to ask for and this means that the corp always has a supply of minerals and everyone benfits, even if they cannot fly a hulk, etc.
I find I do most of the work myself and have a selection of trusted memebers who have director or enhanced status to help me out when I'm offline. If you can try to get a similar set up then you may well find a success.
