My trade alt is nearly max'd out and I'm thinking of starting a pirate alt on that account. I want to experience piracy from day one. Combat-wise what is the most capable starting character? Any tips for a budding pirate?

Look in the noob forum area, I actually have a post there about how to build a character for combat from day 1. I think it's on the second page now, anyone wanna bump it?
But seriously, it walks you through, step by step of the creation process, on how to build your guy for maximum performance. I'd link it, but I don't know how, which actually translates to, I do know how, I'm just too lazy to do it.

Don't bother providing a link for the fella. I'm sure he won't get bored looking for your thread

Thanks Sarge. I found your post and have a few questions.
Are all races pretty equal as combatants in the first few days? I notice you like to balance your stats instead of min/maxing like other people do. Care to explain your thinking?
Is the Rifter really the best PvP frigate? It seems that Minmatar are jack's of all trades and masters of none (at least not in the beginning). Their ships are almost "too" versatile.

In an attempt to answer my own question I broke out EFT. I created EFT character files with the starting skills for each race for both the soldier and special forces type. Then I tried to build out one frigate for each race that only required training for the standard tackle package (MWD,SCRAM,WEB). The picture below shows the stats for all four characters. The differences are quite interesting.
The Gallente character has the best DPS out of the box with the Caldari character close behind. The Caldari character also has amazing volley damage. The Amarr character had the best tank but could not sustain it. I forgot to turn off the MWD in two of the setups below but if you do that they were cap stable.

No offense but those fits sucked. You don't fit a Rifter like that, you don't fit a Incursus like that, you don't fit a Punisher like that and if you undock in that Kestrel, a kitten is gonna die.
If you want a good piracy char, don't look at what ships you can fly off the start, look also at how your character will improve over time. Probably the best races for those are Gallente and Minmatar. And if you do choose Gallente, start with Caldari Achura - Charisma 3 ftw, and use his SP in gunnery to get you started. If you choose Minmatar - think they have a character with low Charisma too, then go for starting with as much gunnery as possible.
And pls, stay away from those kind of fits. Sustainable when it comes to tank does not count in PVP, because sustainable will do crap for you when you die in 1-2 minutes.
Rifter is not X-Wing CCP. Trinity model kinda sucks. |

I like the idea of starting with a Caldari character for the stats and training Gallente ships. As for the fits, if you have something better that you can fly with a day of training please post it. I obviously do not know what I am doing...

Edited by: Pahko Merkhan on 02/12/2007 01:20:37 The more I have researched this I see there is very little difference between the various races. After about a week any of them will make a viable combatant. One the first day I can be tackling with an afterburner and on day 4 I will have a MWD. After that it will be fitting skills to be able to put bigger guns on my frigate.
I narrowed it down to two options: Achura (with Gallente ships) or Minmatar. While the Achura Monks do have good stats (C3 I10 P10 M8 W8) they look too nice/pretty to be pirates. The Sebiestor Rebels also have decent stats (C6 I10 P10 M6 W7) and they are ugly. Which in my opinion adds something to a pirate character. ;)
I may just start two trial accounts and try both out.

Archura have the best starting stats, and you can cross train ships from day 1 and be in another race. To be honest, what their face looks like really doesn't mean anything to me, it all depends on what they are shooting back at me with.
Keep your attributes balanced, don't make one or two heavier than the rest. You'll be thankful later.
