Hey anyone done any benchmarking of the new Trinity Engine to determine which graphics card is better for it?
I'm currently running EVE on my 20" Wide Screen LCD at 1680x1050 and I'm still undecided whether a 8800GT is the way to go or whether a 3870 is a sufficient and cheaper option.
I know the 8800GT is pretty powerful but it doesn't support DX10.1 and my motherboard can't do SLI
As for the 3870, I can possibly upgrade to CrossFire in the future once the price drops
Any thoughts and/or benchmarks to support either option?
Thanks!

I'd like to see benchmark results as well.
I'm not so interested in knowing which video card (ATI vs. nVidia) performs better than the other, but I AM interested in seeing benchmarks compared between the R2 graphical engine and the new Trinity engine.

QUOTE : "DirectX 10.1 is an incremental update of DirectX 10.0 which will be shipped with, and require, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in January 2008. DirectX 10.1 will be backwards compatible with DirectX 10.0 hardware, but the new features will not be available until 10.1 compliant hardware is released. The release mainly sets a few more image quality standards for graphics vendors, while giving developers more control over image quality. Features scheduled for DirectX 10.1 include:
Mandatory 32-bit floating point filtering Mandatory 4x anti-aliasing Shader model 4.1 " ====== in other words it's a small advance over DX 10 , and no game will require it specifically for a long long time

OK, a couple of questions
A) XP or Vista B) Have you tried out of station? I mean the new station probably has more effect now. Wondering about FPS in space.
Anyone else has benchmarks?

HD2600XT on C2D E4400 (the card has around 50-60% in 3dmark06 then the 37xx cards have)
Shadows on normal / Bloom on high, 1280x1024 no AA/FA: Station: 70-120fps Outside station with aprox 30-50 ships around: 15-25fps DED Complex with aprox 20-30 NPCs shooting at me: 40-50fps PvP fights 20-30 ships involved, 250 in local: 15-25fps
So i guess it depends on what you like to run it, a 37xx card will for sure be not enough if you like to run it on extreme shadows with AA / FA. Also depending on my experience with the HD2600XT that i have since it released, ATI needs months over months to get a driver stable for a new card, so i would more recommend wait the 2 months for NVIDIA to release the 10.1 cards and then get a cheaper 8800GT(X)

You`re doing something wrong. My laptop has a 7600 GO 512mb. 1280x800 HDR off shadows at standart. Station 60 FPS. In space at gate with several ships = 85 FPS.
8800 GTS OC on main: 1920x1200 HDR=high shadows =high = 100 FPS in station.
Laptop runs XP. Main runs Vista 64. You seem to have a driver issue there.

We do run internal benchmarks but as the final release has not been built yet we have no stats on the final performance.
I will try to put something together and release it after the release of Trinity with more information.

Edited by: sdchew on 01/12/2007 12:41:59 I got feedback from my corpmate. The general feeling is the Trinity Client gives better FPS than the Rev 2 one.
The 8800 GTS FPS number from MOS Def look really sweet!

Um. Would it not make more sense to get a benchmark input together from subscribers, like a small test/forward program, it's the simplest way to get an overview of what goes around among subscribers vs performance. Or do a serious benchmark program on the final release but before deployment >.<

For productive comparisons, everyone needs to be looking at the same thing to get an idea of their frame rate.
Two solutions come to mind, the first being very, VERY simple and possibly unrepresentative - when you first run the game, you're looking at the big "EVE" logo swooping around... hit CTRL-F during this and watch the performance. I have a fanless 6600GT that runs two of the old clients just fine... the frame rate falls to 20fps with just one client on the new graphics.
Another solution is for CCP to release a benchmarking sequence, which is a version of the executable that you don't play, and doesn't require an internet connection - it simply renders a bunch of ships and stations, etc. in the same order & sequence every time. I could see sites like http://www.hardocp.com using this as part of their video card tests.
Again, the only productive way to do comparisons is for everyone to be looking at the same thing. An Anathema inside a Gallente station can't have the same number of polys as a Moros in an Amarr station, and so on - and out in space, all bets are off.

According to a lot of fps i heard from different systems and those i know from my own system i bet some billion ISKs those are without premium content. 85fps with a 7xxx series card and shadows enabled is not possible with the premium content. The only cards i heard of yet that can do this is HD2900 and 8800 series...

Dude i got premium content on my desktop so i can tell it is active. Believe me: The shadows and HDR make the difference. That kills a mobile GPU. Trinity II premium runs faster then classic on the 7600 GO 512mb. Edit: Also tested a mission. Lvl 4 deadspace mission full with NPCs. 45 FPS That`s also more then with trinity classic. Wanna bet your billions?

exactly what i meant... 2600XT shadows off = 90fps, shadows on default (=normal =what you wrote), 30fps... u cant tell me in anyway that a mobile GPU with half the perfomance of my card makes the same thing 3 times faster almost...

There`s ppl here that get 30FPS with a8800 GT because they screw up their system. What`s your resolution? Keep in mind that 1280x800 is very easy on the system because it is a low res.

the system is fine im used to optimizing those since win95, and all games have better perfomance then they should have ;)
its 1280x1024, but with widescreen effect (those improves perfomance effectevily), but as soon as premium d/l works again ill test it with your resolution... But as said, with shadows on normal i dont believe you can achieve such high fps with that card...

Ahh now it makes sense. In FD- at undock anything dies. Even my 8800 GTS OC goes down to 30 FPS there with Settings at high. It`S the station that kills FPS though not ships. In FFA it`s all good. Station with shadows at high or extreme is a real killer.

Yeah, I'm a tad ****ed about the new content and the ****e performance.
Dual Core 6600 (2.4ghz x2) 2gb memory Nvidia 7950GX2
System is 14 months old. I might upgrade the CPU, but that's a bloody expensive graphics card and I can't be arsed to upgrade yet.
Running in SLI mode @ 1680 x 1050: Pre-premium graphics = ~220 FPS in station; ~120 FPS undocked Premium Graphics (+all the bells and whistles) - ~45 FPS in station; ~30 FPS undocked.
I expected to see a decrease in performance, but not THAT much. I'm hoping that there will be a few tweaks to the graphics engine over the next few patches that will improve performance. Otherwise, I'll be running the old graphics engine and be ****ed off.

My setup:
P4 3.4Ghz, ASRock 775XFIRE-ESATA2 mainboard, 2 gig DDR2 533Mhz Sapphire X1650 Pro 512Meg (6X MSAA, 4X AF, HDR: ON, Shadow:Normal, Bloom: OFF) @1680x1050 It's nice the ATI drivers will allow AA and HDR
I'm waiting for a replacement X1650 so that I can check it out with a crossfire setup although I'm not really expecting too much of an improvement because of the lame Intel chipset. It only has 4 lanes available for the 2nd graphics card.
I've got an Asus M2R32-MVP on order so it will be nice to see what a 2x 16-lane crossfire setup can do.

yeah, i have similar equipment and getting the same results. weird though is that on the first day the new graphics was released i had around 90-100 fps in station with the new graphics enabled. after that my FPS tanked down to 50 fps in stations and 20-30 fps outside.

How about in the long term, you get the content guys to make a nice scripted game intro using the new engine? That way it could also be used as a benchmark, since benchmarking in game is of somewhat limited usefulness.

actually, ultimately, I'd like to see what runs eve with the new content best, maybe a top 5 or 10, but with legit benchmarks. I'm in the market for a new pc anyways, might as well taylor what i buy to what I use the pc for most currently.
