I've been playing EVE for about a month now and I really want to like this game, but I just can't find the fun factor.
In the beginning it was quite fun with the lvl1 missions being a bit of a challenge. Now I got a destroyer and I hardly have time to activate my 8 guns before an enemy ship is destroyed.
The lvl1 missions just don't even have a hint of challenge, but still I'm not allowed to do lvl 2 missions, so I grind the same old lvl1 missions over and over again to try and get enough standing to do lvl 2 missions.
I know this game is about PVP, which is great, but maybe not the best way to enter a game as a new player.
I've tried to join a coorp, but in my time zone I was consistently the only one logged on, so I quite that, since it was just a 10% tax for nothing.
I'm starting to feel this game just isn't for me, but maybe I just donĘt know enough. Maybe I should be doing something else than missions?

Train Social III then the connections skill to get a boost to your standings - this will grant you access to some L2 agents.
And you are right, there is more to Eve than missions. Shame about the corp you joined but what can I say? Find one in your timezone. Find one that'll show you the ropes in PVP. Check out the recruitment forum for corps with lots of posts recommending them, join their public channel for a while to see if they suit you before you sign up.
Don't give up yet, you've still got a lot of the game to experience.

It takes some time getting used to EVE imo... And running the same missions might seem odd, but in reality, most any game with quests, have the same old quest with a different critter to kill... so its not really that different.
If you wanna like eve, i suggest you try to find other ways to make money, see if you like making alot of money, and find a corp with people online in your timezone.
Climbing the ranks in missions if pretty fun, and from lvl 3 missions up they can get prety fun, and make some decent money. Eve is indeed not for everyone, and if it cant seem to catch your attention, ..well there you go
Decide either way... I dont even pvp and i have fun. i can mine for 5 hours straight and have a decent ammount of fun, and all the more when i get payed for my ore :P
Find that which makes you have fun, and if it isnt there.. move on

Thanks for the advise... I'm training social already now... and looking for a corp in my time zone.
I'm still wondering why they didn't make more challenging lvl1 mission though. Doing the same 10 missions over and over again just isn't fun.

ITs just not where their focus is i suppose.. Its the same way with lvl 2 3 and 4 missions :P they do get more challanging unless you own some super ship.. but you`ll be doing the same one plenty of times :p

Hi surfinity,
On December 5th the new Trinity expansion is released and the following is from the Patch notes:
"Missions are a vital part of EVE's Player versus Environment experience. Over 140 missions are a part of the EVE: Trinity expansion, including new Mining/Harvesting, Mega-courier, New Player Experience, and Story Arcs for Empire and Faction agents"
Hopefully this should add to your enjoyment of Eve.

Try mining.
Train up connections while you mine.
Scripted content sucks.
Maybe Eve isn't for you.
Can I have your stuff.

I think I can speak for alot of people who play EvE that when I first started out, I enjoyed it for a month or so, but then walked away from the game from awhile. It was nothing specific about the game, it just wasnt my time to play it. Willing to give it another go a few months later, I fell in love with the game, because I understood the basics and was able to get more involved.
Take a break for awhile, or wait til after the expansion to see how the game feels for you.

Agreed...I played for a month or so about 4 years ago, I liked it in principle, but hit the repetition wall, couldn't see the point, quit. Came back on the free trial recently, knew more of what I was doing, picked things up faster, opened a wider world. Love it now, finding new things to do, new tactics, richer rewards...you name it, this game is completely different to what I played before, and yet...it's the same game ;)

Find a decent corp in your own timezone, and find the line of work your interested in, be it mining, manufacturing, trading, courier or pvp'ing.
I personally like pvp'ing, but I tend to use covops ships to hunt out my victim and let the bigger guys kill him/her, others in my corp like to seek and destroy, others like to manufacture and research.
Although there are base trades within eve, what you can do with those trades is limited to your own ambitions, maybe you like to use a droneboat, train up drone skills and let those tear your enemy apart, my favourite fitting for a Myrmidon is a sentry drone sniper fit, I can do most missions and cosmic anomolies solo with it.
Maybe you want to train covops and use a stealth bomber so you can uncloak near your enemy, loose off a barrage of cruise missiles into a hauler or something..or on a bigger scale, into a POS during a fleet op.
You could even become a pirate in low sec, and ransom haulers or other targets for isk..or just destroy them for the hell of it.
That's just a few possibilities, it's what you make of it that defines how much fun you get from eve, and yes you may die alot during pvp in your early days, but so what!!!....your clone gets reactivated and if your in a decent corp, you get a new ship and fittings and be back out there in minutes.
Hope you stick around

Welcome to EVE Surfinity.
With the level 1 missions you're only scratching the surface of EVE. As others have recommended training Social to level III will help you access better missions. Joining a good corp is key when you start off. Try Eve University - not only can they help you learn your way through the game, theyre a massive Alliance and will have lots of players of your skill level and time zone on: you'll prob meet like minded players and eventually set off together to form your own corp.
EVE is a slow burn game - try to think in terms of weeks and months rather than hours and days. While the PVP element is probably the most dynamic element don't discount trading, hauling (courier runs), salvaging, mining, industrial production or a mixture of all of these.
EVE doesn't tell you what to do - it just provides you with a massive tool box: how you mould and define your character is ultimately up to you. That unlimited potential means the scale and depth of EVE is often breath taking. Who will you be in a years time? An industry mogul? CEO of a large salvaging corp? Hated pirate or famed blockade runner?

Yeah even though i have multpile accounts (which means i like it) EvE always gets dull fast. The actual game play is very boring. I like the back story and the art. However once you have enough ISK to buy what you want the only reason is to log in and change skill training because you get no sort of advancement from ingame activities. I tried PvP both with fleets and Solo: Fleets are dull you sit in a blob and any action that happens its fastand over before yo uknow it, the rest of the time you are bored. Solo is a bit more fun; but to do it right you have to sit and probe out people forever and it gets old fast. Mining..hahaha no thanks. Mission running is boring grinding like everyother mmo (talk to npc go kill nps rinse and repeat). The only reason i'm subscribed is because i detest the leveling treadmill and level based games, but in all honestly EvE isnt all that much better.

EVE is kind of a strange game. You have to make your own role. Its not like WOW where basically they tell you what to do and you do it and its fun.
In EVE you have to make your own fun. How you do this is the challenge.
I myself became a trader which involved researching prices all over the galaxy and moving goods around. Its hard to do this profitably.
If you don't like missions you might want to join up with one of the GoonSwarm corps. They do frigate zerg PVP which you might find fun.
You could also try exploring 0.0 if you are gutsy enough. Its possible to do. I once lived in 0.0 to do Serpentis missions for a month even though I had no pass from the controlling entity. Basically everyone you encounter tries to kill you. Pretty exciting. I never lost a ship.
Manufacturing or refining are other angles.
Ask yourself what your personality is and try to design a role for yourself.

Train social, and then connections - should be able to get to low quality L2 agents right away.
Look for agents in the same corporation you are doing L1's with. Also, be sure to do the storyline missions.
Do join a corp, but not a random corp: try to find corporations with people active at the same time you are online: shouldn't be too hard.

As for the Storyline missions... how do you tell if an event agent has something for you without flying all the way over to find out there's no job?

Surfinity theres alot more to EVE than just missioning, Ive been playing this game for 3 years now and I've never even had access to a level 2 agent, neither do I spend all my time PvPing. I find the mission grind the most boring part of EVE, I'd even rather be mining, atleast mining has some social lure (you usualy have to mine in groups unless you have loads of alts).
If your corps not active enough just join a larger one with people in your time zone, take your time when deciding on a corp and ask lots of questions before hand. _______________________________________________

As far as I know, storyline agents will always contact you by Evemail when they have something for you (once every 16 missions?)

As well, in the Journal (one of the buttons on the left, near the bottom) the mission they are offering will also be there. So you can even take a glance at what they want you to do (kinda) The Game's always changing under your feet; don't start moaning when you get a toe caught in the gears. |

Edited by: Torco on 03/12/2007 16:23:05 hi surfinity!
You need to join a good corp. The most important thing: Join a friendly corp! People who take you by the hand and fly missions, take you to PVP-Ops, do mining Ops etc etc.
It is so much fun to work in a medium sized corp where everyone is important to make the corp successful. It is imo no fun at all if you join a 200people corp and noone cares about you. I wish you all the best!

Emphasized the Medium part. While a large corp can still work for you (if you like structure and everything firmly arranged), a small corp is only good if you like challenges because they will often be severely lacking in the means to enhance your gameplay (like the "all industrial" corps that won't survive their first wardec). So for your needs yes, medium is good. Too large or too small may not work for you.
