I read these forums and I know and understand what the term "Carebear" means, but the word itself is just retarded. I don't care how long it's been used there *must* be a better word to describe these people.
Anyone have any ideas?

'Carebear' is a term like 'fanboi' etc.. it was originally made by some 13 year olds little sister and just like those l33t d0ods who still think they are in fashion (as if they ever were) think that when they use it, they arn't embarassing themselves. When boody hell of course they are. Calling someone a 'care bear?' ROFL if that isn't sad I don't know what is. Reminds me of junior high school or something.
Anyway to answer your question, its someone who doesn't want to partake in PvP, but generally the term carebear is used by 'griefers' - people that don't want to PvP with people that want the same (becaues they get their asses handed to them) but want to fight those that don't want to PvP (and thus be able to gank them and feel big). Hence an explanation of the griefer - care bear relationship.
Generally those that have a big issue with these 'care bears' are people that don't understand that commercial mmporgs consist vastly of these people, with the PvP people being a minority by far. EVE caters for both on one server but recent arguments have been amazing about how these same 'peaceful' players should feel some risk in high sec areas where they shouldn't be able to 'play risk-free'. Yeah right ;)
Thousands of years in the future, the best technology and the government can't completely and utterly protect their people in the highest secs from pirates? Somehow I doubt that.
Summary: PvPers fight it out in 0.4 or less whether its bounty hunters, freelance police, corp wars, alliances etc. 'Care Bears', a hideous term refers to those that rarely ever leave high sec and thus do not engage in PvP at all.
And griefers are people who spend most of their time ganking these very same people who don't want to fight (and thus are now attempting to get CCP to give them bcak their griefing time by slowly attempting to make ganking possible in higher secs - something that is never going to happen).
Thanks :) -----

The term is overused. What is funny is that the term griefer will go away. The term PVP will become obsolete.
The game is changing to a player run system. The future will hold more players accountable to thier actions. There will be no place in 0.0 or 0.1-0.4 that you can mine in peace. Players in gangs will warp in and try to over take thier opponents. Pirating will become obsolete. Since everyone will be doing it. Alliances are changing the game. Prepare your gunnery skills thwy will be usefull soon. --------------------------

But the point is, arn't people that use the term 'carebear' embarassed that they are? Using what is quite clearly the sort of language you would use in junior school?
I mean what the heck, yer calling people the name of some kids cartoon characters as some sort of insult. It would be fitting if you were 11 or 12 yourself (and I am guessing some of them are) but if youa re not, use something else eh? 'Whiner' is one thing, but 'fanboy' or its more stylish version 'fanboi' (cringe, god how embarrasing) is another, but carebear is just a step a few miles too far into idiot land (though fanboy pretty much is in there too).
Ah theres no hope really is there lol! :) -----

Swift, not to flame but I can't believe what you just did there. Now read my post this time, please. I know what a "Carebear" is. Thank you for trying to be helpful but, lol, you missed the entire point of my thread! Six paragraphs (with a summary) and even edited, lol.
The point is this: The term itself "Carebear" just sounds rediculous (my opinion). I don't know where it came from. I don't care where it came from. I don't even care how long people have been using this term. The term just sounds dumb. I think people should call it something else.
How about "Brats" or "Noobs" or "Pu$$" or StrongSads" or "Simpletons" or "Angels" or "Turtles" or something.
"Griefers" is no better. Those are people that camp at stargates and kill new players, right? I prefer to call those people "Trolls," to be honest. A troll is just someone that does something agressive to another person for no reason at all. Worthless.
Just my opinion.

better term for carebear...
most players in EVE aren't carebear or griefer but like humanity some where in the middle. How about we call Carebears, "Stripper(empire strip mining)" and griefers ,"Stab Monkey's"
Besides their is a difference between pirates, PvPers and Griefers ussally. Look at Drunken Toady(master) he is a PvPer not a griefer like Tank "Stab Monkey" CEO.
AND anyone who knows Carebears or "Stripper" see they really are the detriment to the game by having fleet of BS taking all the "safe" ore. Which actually is CCP's fault since they do the regrowth...
Anyways I vote "Strippers" for carebears and "Stab Monkey's" for griefers |

Edited by: Hafthor on 09/03/2004 01:08:34 This is something that just sticks, nobody controls it. My little brother has started to use the word 'gank' for any situation since he saw it in EVE. Makes me crazy sometimes. People (kids in particular) call eachother names. Since english isn't my first language I've never understood some of these words. Like 'dyke' where the hell does that come from?

A carebear does not care about anything but his own play style, even if it means that all balance goes out the window.
One example is the demand that he can mine riskfree and make just as much isk like everyone else.
What they do make is people quitting in disgust.
As soon as the commercial game provider caves into carebear demands, the mud is sure to die. Perhaps not all at once, but it surely will.

Edited by: S3VYN on 09/03/2004 02:50:58 Awww Sally... :( Don't start that here!
"Carebear" is generally thrown around by a very specific crowd to refer to anyone they feel is inferior to them.
For instance, I was labeled "carebear" when I camped the OTHER side of a "pirate" camped gate warning people not to go through. While many of the same people who labeled me that complain about things such as Sally B just complained about and avoid the term being applied to themselves.
So I guess you can define the term as I have seen it used in EVE as a derogitory remark meant to make the target feel inferior, because it isn't used consistantly for anything other than that.

Actually "Nerf" comes from Hasbro foam toys. A toy foam nerf gun is less potent then a real gun(a diminished capacity) hence the term nerfing.

The origin of the term carebear
It is a silly term, especially since it is so overused. Some people call anyone who doesn't like PVP a "careber", but really the term would only apply to someone who tried to stop OTHER people from doing PVP (like advocating CONCORD in 0.1-0.4 space or something) since the Care Bears were all about peace for all (even those who don't LIKE peace).
A few better terms might be:
Hippie - someone who never fights anyone
Mining Drone - a person who spends all their time in high security space digging ore
Preacher - anyone who spends more time griping on the forums or in game than they do actually playing EVE
Mommy (or Daddy) - the anti-PVP fanatics who always want everyone to play nice and get along
And in the interest of fairness, a couple for the other side:
Rambo - PVP'er who likes to fight just for the sake of fighting, rather than to achieve some purpose (piracy, bounty hunting, defense, etc...)
Bluto - someone who enjoys ganking helpless targets for fun (rather than for profit) (named after the bully from Popeye cartoons, if you don't recognize the name)
Mad Max - anarchist who wants CONCORD and sentry guns removed so that all space is a free-for-all

Carebears is just the name the kiddies call the mature players when they dont get their way. And I know im gonna get flamed by all the kiddies for this, but I'll tell you right up front... it will just prove my statement :)
(but there will be at least one.... its another kiddie trait)
So there you have it... the Carebears, and the Kiddies... which one are you?
PS: So you dont get the wrong impression, mature players can PvP too, its got nothing to do with being 'not mature'. It's all how you go about it- There are alot of fine examples for both sides :)
