Hi guys, I'm planning on doing a cell phone game as a class project and it'd be cool if you all could answer this questionnaire (which is part of the project).
- Do you play games on your cell phone?
- If not, why?
- If yes, how much do you pay for games per month?
- If yes, when do you play games on your cell phone and for how long?
- At home
- At work
- At school
- Waiting in line
- In a waiting area
- In the bathroom/restroom
- In a bus
- In a train
- In a taxi
- Have you played Freelancer and/or Wing Commander: Privateer?
- If not, are you familiar with their game mechanics?
- Would you play a single player game like Freelancer or Privateer on your cell phone?
- Would the ships in the game have to be customizable? (e.g. weapons & equipment)
- If no, would it be satisfactory to have a variety of ships with varying weapons layouts?
- Would you prefer the game to be action or can it be turn based?
- Which of the following game features would need to be in the game:
- Trade system (Simple buy & sell)
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- Missions (Kill & transport)
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- Exploration (derelicts & asteroids)
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- Faction standings system
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- Background story
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- A storyline to play through
- Would this feature work on a cell phone?
- Access to unique ships accessible only when in a certain real world geographical areas.
- Would it be satisfactory to have all weapons fire at once instead of being able to select which weapons to fire?
- Would you like to have the option of sending your progress to a service that ranks your accomplishments against other players and lists them on a website?
Here's a link a prototype I've made on an applet to give you guys a feel for the screen real estate available: Java Game. It will require that you have the Java Runtime Environment installed in order to view it.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions.

Do you play games on your cell phone? No.
If not, why? It's a phone. Tiny screen, tiny buttons, crappy processor, etc etc. I use my phone to make phone calls.
Have you played Freelancer and/or Wing Commander: Privateer? Freelancer yes, WC:P no.
Would you play a single player game like Freelancer or Privateer on your cell phone? No. I like to play games in comfort, with a nice monitor, a good mouse, a large keyboard and a decent graphics card, processor, sound card etc. I don't even like playing console games, I hate the controllers and have never played a console game that was 1/10th as enjoyable for me as a good PC game. I will only ever use my mobile phone for making phone calls. I don't even text.
The rest of the questions are not applicable to me.

Would be easyier if you numbered the questions.
-No, when I'm waiting at a bus stop or on a train I'll just get my book out and read that.
- Never played any of those games. -No would not play any of them on my cell phone
-Prefer it to be turn based -must have: Trade, background story, exploration, unique ships.
- Yes i would like a ranking system. _______________________________________________

Do you play games on your cell phone? No, no time for that. If I need to kill time on my phone, I watch a movie or surf the web over 3G.
Have you played Freelancer and/or Wing Commander: Privateer? Yes. Would you play a single player game like Freelancer or Privateer on your cell phone? No

I considered my answers, and initially declined to post, figuring I'd just be a sourpuss. But we may be on to something, at least for the EVE demographic.
I use my cell phone for one thing. Talking to people. I'd rather I didn't even have to use it for that, but such are the demands of modern business. Sometimes I use it to tell the time.
I would never use a cell phone game to "soak-up" some extra minutes. I'd either be contemplating the event that I'm "soaking-up" minutes to get to, or reading a book, or peoplewatching. Looking at broads' asses > cell phone games.
If I were looking to soak a whole lot of minutes, like a transatlantic flight, and I decided I needed electronic stimulation, I'd get a dedicated handheld platform. More likely I'd look for something that would let me browse the web. Most likely is I'd just bring a book. Or two. And a couple National Geographics.
Don't look at this as a whole bunch of flamage or trollage. This is important demographic information. The kind of people you want to target with a cell phone game are not the kind of people who play EVE. Good Luck! ----- TANSTAAFL

Browsing web? On a flight? uhm... fail? :p

A lot of people use their phones in more creative ways than you do though. Some things I do with my phone: Purchase bus tickets Transfer money via internet banking Listen to music Watch videos Browse the web Keep track of my appointments Take pictures Text Use GPS software (TomTom Navigator) to find my way Use putty to SSH if I must ID sound clips (TrackID) IM (msn, skype etc via fring) Calculator
Oh and... I call, too :)

Is that still serious business? That's why I don't do transatlantic flight. Hell, I try not to leave my state if I can help it. ----- TANSTAAFL

I can't be bothered with all the questions, but I'll play a phone game if it's simple. I play tetris when i get really bored waiting for something because it only needs a small screen and it dosn't make the phone pretend it's a shrunken gameboy. _

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 03/12/2007 04:30:02 imho most games that were fun on a c64 could be fun on a cellphone. that is, if theyre simple in control.
that means nokia screwed it up big time. snakes is not really a game thats fun to play with the dialpad. its horrible.
same goes for qix, which would be perfect, if it werent for those meddling controls.
stuff i can imagine is basically everything that can be played turnbased, even very basic economic simulations. hanse/fugger anybody? you may be able to design privateer as some sort of space rpg, but please for the sake of everything thats holy DO NOT EVER get the the shameless idea of putting some vertical scrolling shoot em up elements in there as a sorry excuse for space flight.
it would just suck ass big time.
always keep in mind that games should be fun and stress relieving. fiddling around with much too small buttons and straining your eyes because you have to look for small and fast moving objects is NOT FUN and not stress relieving either.
good luck o/

What's the point? Its a tiny screen, and there's better things to do.
Originally by: Marcus Starr 2.Have you played Freelancer and/or Wing Commander: Privateer?
Yes, I've played Freelancer.

What the heck are you on? No. Now, if you mean more of a pure Elite clone with less of a twitch aspect... that might be marketable. Bleh, I can't go on. Cellphone games are stupid.

1. I got a couple of games on my phone, out of idle curiosity. Dumb shootemup games. If I am playing on them it's generally waiting for my laundry to finish (or something equally boring) so for no more than 5 minutes or so as a rule. They hammer the battery. I've spent all of a couple of quid in total on them.
2. Freelancer is the open ended tradey / fightey space game.
3. I can't see something like that working on a phone. Seems like it would be too involved, have too complex a control system and require too much time for a session to be a good phone game.
I'm looking at your proposed features and back at my w800i and it just looks like a nightmare cramming everything in. EVE RELATED CONTENT |
