Been two boxing lvl1 missions with my learning skill focussed character taking care of salvage with 2 salvagers fitted on a destroyer.
This has been ok if sometimes a little slow.
Moved up to lvl2 missions last night which kind of changed things.
As the combat generated more wrecks over a much wider area salvaging/looting became a real pain.
Would it make sense to base a salvage fitted frigate in each of the four systems where i mission. Then my alt could zoom back to pickup the frigate towards the end of each mission. Intial setup costs would be quite high but i intend to be running lvl2 missions in this area for quite some time and it would save alot of time.
Regarding salvageing in general. With a salvage skill lvl1 and 2 salvagers it can sometimes take a terribly long time to complete salvaging on particular wreck. Read that the base chance of low level wrecks was 50% so did not think training up salvage skill was that important to begin with. Was i misinformed?

Why only fit 2 salvagers on a destroyer when you can 5-6 :) Salvage is pretty small, and you can probably fit 10 days of salvage into a destroyers cargohold.
Fit the destroyer for speed, and maybe consider training for tractor beam.
My salvaging ship is a heretic (tech 2 destroyer) with 5 salvagers and 3 tractor beams. This way i can zoom around, tractoring 3 wrecks towards me and salvageing the 4th. ----------------------

sorry not clear on my original post.
The 2 salvagers on a destroyer was how i worked when my alt was providing supplementary dps for missions.
Planned to setup frigate with salvagers (choosing frigate to control setup costs).
With the lvl2 missions need alt in Destroyer with a reasonable amount of guns to help with Frigate especially when jamming is a problem.

Really only 2 courses of action to consider:
1. Outfit a destroyer and salvage after you completed the mission or cleared some pockets, switching ships. 2. (After Trinity) outfit a marauder with 2 tracs and 2 salvagers in the 4 non weapon slots, capitalizing on its 4/4 build and trac bonus and salvage while fighting. |

AFAIK, chance to salvage is 5% per level, with a base of 0%. Thus, salvage V gets you 25% chance to salvage.
Many many many people stop simultaneously fighting and salvaging, as it becomes a liability. The faster they die, the longer you live. On L3's and L4's, it becomes impossible to salvage and fight together because the bigger ships are so slow, so pretty much everyone resorts to having at minimum a battle ship and a dedicated salvage, usually a destroyer because of the hi slots, loading a 4/4 configuration of tractors and salvagers.
The nice thing about this is that you will have the same ship for a long long time. As you said, I have a salvage ship at each location and all I have to do is fly my combat ship in to do missions. I did this because I kept on having to fly back and forth in my pod or shuttle picking up the other ship. Once I did this, I no longer had to worry about logistics, a huge burden off my back. Now I just go to the agent in my combat ship if I'm ready to fight.
Another thing, doing these in a cruiser is nice because you can wait for the npc's to come to you. This has the benefit of centering the wrecks around you. If you bookmark your position as you're doing the fighting, you can just warp back to that bm in your destroyer and you'll find most of the wrecks will be within tractor range.
If you aren't salvaging fast enough, train Salvage IV or so, and if you have money later on, consider adding a salvage tackle rig or two to your salvaging ship. Each rig gives you an additional bonus of 10% chance to salvage. Once you have a high salvage rate and are salvaging faster than you can bring in wrecks, just go 5/3 on tractors/salvagers to bring in more wrecks. Re vera, potas bene. |

Can you just change ships to salvage? so just warp to the same location as the fight, the wrecks won't dissapear?

Yes, the wrecks won't disappear after you finish the mission. Remaining NPC's, objects and roids all disappear but wrecks and canisters stay in place (for about 1-2 hrs, so don't wait too long). Just bookmark the spot and come back later. As soon as the mission is over it won't be deadspace anymore so you can just warp in without using any gates
