This is your chance to settle an argument between me and another ¦famous¦ dev who goes by the name Atropos something something.
He is used to black russians that consist of vodka, kahlua and coke!?
I¦m used to just the vodka and kahlua and swear my way is right and if it¦s not right then it sure as hell is better then the weaker versions he drinks
So, what is the right way to mix a black russian, with or without coke?

kahlua isn't traditionally a 'manly' drink in the first place.
White Russians are where it's at though.

As the resident Alcohol expert in EVE and the Coldfront IRC Network (irc.coldfront.net), I can inform you that Eris is in fact correct - a Black Russian consists of Vodka and Coffee Liqueur, the most notable example of which is Kahl·a.
I believe Vodka, Kahl·a and Cola has a different name, varying depending on location.

I don't know about a real definition, but I have had many in many different places and all have consisted on vodka, kahlua (or alternative), and coke.

tbh I prefer White Russians. They lend themselves more to gradual sipping. Although now that I have seen the recipe for this 'tall' Black Russian I am very intrigued.

Given the price of the drink in Iceland, the coke means you can drink it for longer. Sure it's diluted, but they are not cheap drinks here.

Black Russian is just Vodka and Kahlua. Add cream/milk and it's a white russian.
In the bar I tended for a while I never heard of adding coke to it, in fact it kinda sounds a little disgusting to me.

whilst we're on the subject - i've been racking my brains, and i'm pretty sure i've bought kahlua/vodka without a mixer as something else in the past (not one of those naff little 'shooters').

Ahem, as a representative from EVE's alcohol conglomerate (mentioned in the NY Times...), I can assure you it is 3 parts vodka 1 part Kahlua. There is no coke.
Not only that, but I was a bartender all throughout college and, at least in the U.S., if were to put coke in it, it would have been sent back and I would have been fired and never rehired as a bartender. In a nutshell, life would have become meaningless.

When I was in the UK, every time I asked for a Black Russian, it was always served with coke. So it's not that my 'way' is right or wrong, it's just that's the only variant that I've ever known.
As for the "I used to be a bartender..." I used to live in a pub, and we used to serve it with coke.
So ha!

I've never tried a Black Russian... but I loooooove White Russians (Vodka, Kahlua and Cream). I blame the Dude for introducing me to them.

Maybe a Europe thing then?
Then again go to 3 different bars in 3 different areas and order the same drink and chances are each time it'll be different.
I remember Black russians and White russians because there was a one drink difference.
Same with screwdrivers and tequila sunrise/sunsets.

Maybe it's because Europeans, until the last couple of decades were not "ice in drink people", so they decided to fill up their drinks with cold coke to make it tolerable. :) :)
