It's annoying when your targetted ship shows a full circle of red and you can't tell how many HP's he has left.

Yeah I agree, can be very annoying. Question is, how to solve it in a nice way. Of course we need displays for shields, armor and structure, somehow, now that damage isn't leaking through as much.

Indeed. Same for structures.
Take the small warp disruptor for example.
The poor guy that get's trapped by one and starts jumping of joy when it looks like he'll manage to destroy it so he can warp before he dies. What he doesn't know is that when the 1250 shield and 3750 armor is gone and the circle is all red... ... he still has 7500 structure left to destroy

I think that it would be nice just to show the numers on screen as well; shield|armor|hull. in percentage or how much there is left to destroy ------------------------------ Audiofreaks ------------------------------ |

Instead of halfs, maybe the damage circle could be split into thirds?

Alternateive: 3 "layers" of colour, for example Blue for Shields, Green for Armor, Red for Structure
You strip a ship down to 10% shields, you see 10% of the targetting bar with blue, the other 90% with green (for structure). When Armor starts taking damage - it gets replaced with Red, to show the remaining structure.
When structure starts failing, what has been lost is replaced with black (transparent)
Just a couple of thoughts on the issue

Well I must say that the 3 coloured parts would do the trick as long as it really is percentage generated. Very good idea! ------------------------------ Audiofreaks ------------------------------ |

It really doesn't matter how they decide to best build the GUI for this improvement. All we should care about is that they implement it. ---------------------------

i dont like seeing enemys structure shields and armour in a readout. it gives too much away. by all means the coloured semi circles but knowing what level shield management and what extenders the guys got on is no fun !.
I mean the employment things bad enough as u can tell how old a character is and know whether you can take him or not. "Teh lord of Nonni"

Yes....Or when you lock a target it gets the same 3 rings around it as you see for your own ship. Inner ring is Structure, mid ring is Armor, and outer is Shield.

Something like THIS? (I'm bored!)
Quick explanation... Pic 1: Undamaged Pic 2: 50% shield, armor showing (if the damage was at 50% too, you'd see the structure, red, there). Pic 3: All shield gone, 100% armor Pic 4: 50% armor, structure showing (50% armor 0.1% struct would be 50/50 green/black) Pic 5: No armor left, 100% struct Pic 6: 50% struct, nothing left on the right side Pic 7: _VERY_ close to blowing up, if it's not already dead
Of course, the colors (and the whole idea, I imagine it can be hard to grasp at first) needs some more work.
PS. 5-10 minutes of photoshop work, so it's not perfect

Either that, or shade the picture in the center with red from top to bottom as the hull takes damage.

I like the idea jarjar, but green seems like wrong color... especially since its hard enough to see if they are damaged or not if in a red system, green is even more comon.. i think they need some less opacity... --------------------------

I'd rather have either numbers or 3 seperate indicators for shield/armor/struc like the gang display. I've never been a fan of the colored circle, it just seems kind of lame that you're flying around in a battleship and your tactical readout of the enemy ship consists of a little icon with a circle around it that changes color as it gets damaged =/

Good idea jar jar, only bad thing is that if someone has armor/hull dmg with full sheilds it wouldnt show.

Edited by: Thor Adam on 10/03/2004 00:33:04 The layers of colors looks good, although I'd rather like to see yellow for armor instead of green.

Or you could keep the circle but divide it in 3 parts with different colors. Damage starts counter-clockwise with blue for shields, yellow for armor and red for struct. Just like pie with 3 slices, armor at bottom, shields to the left and struct to the right. --

Yes, definently this. Even better than the other ideas as people can have armor/shields regenerate but still have structural damage.

Sensors, anyone?
Shield and armor strength should be easy to measure assuming our ships have the standard sci-fi scanners you see everywhere. I can understand not having exact numbers, but a basic percent damaged indicator makes sense.

That's kinda the point too (and it's not my idea).
I'd prefer to see three circles instead though, somehow. I think this would be a bit too advanced.
BTW, are you talking percentage as in text? Shield: 66.5% Armor: 90% Struct: 100% ... and no graphical indicator?
Also numbers would even harder to read: Shield: 2496.1/4922.5 Armor: 5924.3/6014.6 Structure: 5025.2/5025.2
