I'm just recently returned to Eve after cancelling a while ago (nothing to do with the game BTW, real-life..things). I'd like to try it as a smuggler this time round. Is there money to be made doing this? The excitement would be in smuggling in a cruiser or fast frigate, rather than an indy, but I'm concerned that the margins aren't high enough.
Answers on a postcard...

The only smuggling in game at the moment is the stuff you try to run past blockades by PC pirates

There is nothing stopping you trying that career path, except one minor detail...
The game doesnt currently seperate a smuggler from any other type of trader, the only distinction, is that created by players.
The best thing imo, would be to learn the art of EVE trading (u may already be a master, i dont know) and wait for when CCP creates a smuggler classification/type/career.
As far as I know, the likes of drug and slave smuggling are penned, but not actually present in any game design atm... However, there are many corps out there that enjoy catching players carrying slaves...
Is there any profit in it?? Well, based upon the above, conclusions can be drawn...

My understanding is that the black market--illegal goods, contraband, drugs, etc.-- will be coming in with Shiva, which should be sometime in May.
I've looked forward to outrunning John Law with a cargo hold full of recreational chemicals since beta. ò ò ò

Great, can't wait for a bit of border running. See when Shiva comes then.
I fought the law, but the law didn't care.

Sure there might not be smuggling per se. You could try to make a career as a courier/blockade runner. If pirates tend to camp a gate along the only path from where someone hunts and where they sell their loot, they might be willing to pay you to ferry their loot through the gate in a fast cargo frigate. I used to hunt in Aridia, and I've had a blast running loot past the pirates that camp the route between Aridia and Kador...
The trick to making a living at this, of course, would be getting people to trust you enough to pay you to ferry their stuff.
