I guess I'm asking for a response from a Dev or someone like that.
So does CCP plan on actually letting us know why the coding for boot.ini AND a command that would delete it be close enough to each other to even happen? I know the issue was found, but I would like to know why my boot.ini has to even be touched. There isn't much information in that file, information that could easily be found elsewhere without having to mess with critical system files.
So I'm just curious if there is going to be a planned response that actually lets me know why you guys are messing with my computer in such a way. Is accessing the boot.ini file common practice? It would be one thing if it was within your own program, but this could have potentially affected more than just one program. I just feel CCP has a responsibility (especially toward computer savvy people who fully understand the impact of this) as to why this would happen.

We are in the midst of resolving the issue and will release a post-mortem after a resolution has been made. Modifying the boot.ini file is not normal practice.

The real question I have is why this hasn't been tested. I mean, I installed the premium content on sisi and this went well. Yet, modifications have been made to the tq installer and it didn't go through QA/Test server?
I'm glad I don't have it installed yet. Downloading the full client atm. _ Planet Sight Wallpaper - EvE map |

You're fine. The problem is with the installer script of the premium upgrade. The EVE directory has a file named "boot.ini" unrelated to the windows "boot.ini" file. It contains some information like the server name to connect to.
The installer script changes to your EVE directory to start patching. But instead of deleting "boot.ini" it deletes "\boot.ini". Which if you happen to have EVE installed on your C: drive, erases the windows "boot.ini" file instead of the one in the EVE directory.
It's probably the result of a typo, but the result is pretty catastrophic.

What has that got to do with your windows system files? they should never ever touch your system files no matter what. This is a big screw up from the highest order.
They should make an big public appology and compensate t hose who where affected by it.

So common. What do you mean with 'compensated' anyway, hrm? Your free ticket to more ISK or something? Right.

It isn't and wasn't in your windows folder. It was in your C:\ ... and should still be there -hidden-. If it isn't though and the upgrade accidentally deleted it then you have a problem when you reboot-- it needs that file.

as a software developer, i feel for ccp because this is simply the worst kind of screw up to make. it's epic. it could not reasonably be any worse.
i do know that:
- several people at ccp are utterly humiliated right now - management is running around like headless chickens - everyone else is quietly smiling because when sh*t like this goes down, you have to laugh.
i was lucky in that my eve folder is in D: and my boot drive is F:, due to a series of upgrades etc.
the only disappointing thing I see is that any posts mentioning bugs are getting locked and redirected to the news page, even if the bug being talking about isn't related to this issue. So the forum mods need to calm down.

DO NOT REBOOT!
If you are still in Windows running fine then there is a SIMPLE fix.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\PSS and copy the boot.ini.backup file to C:\
Rename to boot.ini
Simple as that.

well dont panic.. since your probably have your hidden files of..
if you open explorer -> tools -> folder options -> view -> select show hidden files -> deselect "hide extension for known file types" -> and deselect hide protected operating system files
then do a new search

Sadly, I have to agree..
And what makes this epic wtf worse, is that a number of users who (most likely) shutdown their machines after trying the new content, probably have not yet turned their machines on to discover the horror.
They will be at home screaming at their box and a number of them probably don't even read these forums (well - a lot of them probably wont have second computer to that from). And how many of those people could even imagine what has caused the boot.ini to dissappear.
I was about to install it myself this morning, when I noticed the download link wasn't working. Glad I didn't. |
